I would guess something along the lines of Murton, Williams, and Marshall or Murton, Hill, and Gallagher for Zito. Then Hendry spinning Zito into Tejada, and signing Preston Wilson for RF.

Why spin Zito off for Tejada? What if Hendry can trade for both without losing Prior or Z? The longer this circus goes on with Tejada (because you know he's going to continue to throw a fit), the more likely it is the O's would be forced to lower their demands...What an offseason that would be!

Not enough prospects to do both. I wouldn't (and hope Hendry wouldn't) want to mortgage the future for those 2. You're looking at at least 6-7 prospects going in those deals.

But with Williams as one of those being traded and IF Zito would agree to a contract extension before the trade. Wouldld things fall into place?

why would oakland want to sell off zito when they have the best team in the west, and one of the best teams in the AL?

the cubs need a big bat more than they need a #3 starter.

Angels > A's

The Cubs need a 5 hitter & a #3.

fine, they're one of the better teams in the west. plus, they have this thing called the wild card now. in any event, the a's are better than the cubs, and i think it'll take more than prospects to get him.

the only reason i want him is to spin him for tejada.

The AL Wild Card's reserved for either Boston or New York.

I'd prefer the Cubs spinning Zito for Tejada too, but I'll take Zito, if they can't spin him.

That may change soon. As the AL East gets stronger (Toronto looks good), Tampa is a few years away yet, Baltimore, meh.....

Teams like Cleveland and Oakland will have a shot at a wild card once again. Didn't Anaheim make it via wild card the year they were in the Series?

Hmmm think so.

I can see Boston slipping. They should have kept Pedro. NY spends too much to do so.

Boston has been the AL wild card the last 3 years.

2002 Anaheim

2001 Oakland

2000 Seattle

1999 Boston

1998 Boston

1997 New York

1996 Baltimore

1995 New York

ETA: yes, Anaheim was the WC team when they won it all ... so was San Fran

Sorry if this is OT, but just wanted to say thanks Serena for the back-up board.

I say we go all-in (with the prospects), if the experiment fails, we'll just pull a Marlin and re-stock in a couple of years.

well, i don't think oakland's ready to concede that fact in december, especially since it took ny/bos til game 160 or so to clinch the WC last year.

who reporterd that the Cubs where after Zito? which reporter on WGN?

Kaplan said that he heard that Hendry was pushing hard to acquire Zito, and P. Sullivan said that he had heard that from his sources also.

I say just sit on him and don't flip him. That would be an awesome rotation.

I agree unless it is for Abreu. A 3,4,5 with him in the middle would be outstanding.

I agree with you as long as Pie (stated earlier) isn't in the deal and Zito agrees to a contract extension before the trade.

I don't think it is clear cut that Anaheim is a better team than Oakland at this point. Zito/Harden/Haren/Blanton/whomever is a better rotation than Anaheim will throw out there. While Oakland doesn't have anyone of Vlad's caliber on offense, Anaheim isn't exactly a threat to set scoring records. I have trouble thinking of one other player on that team that I'm confident will be an above average offensive player at his position in 2006. Meanwhile, Oakland has a bunch of guys that will probably be above average to make up for the fact that they don't have that elite cornerstone. Given their pitching advantage, I'd say it is at least a tossup in that division and it could very well come down to health.

Zito would be someone it would be very, very safe to offer arbitration to, so the Cubs would get a year of Zito, a first round pick (most likely) and a first round supplemental pick in return for Pie and whatever else they give up to get him.

Of course. Zito agreeing to a long-term extention would have to be a dealbreaker.

I'm curious as to what the cost will be to acquire Zito. I can't say I'm overly familiar with the Athletics' farm system and their needs as a team...so yeah.

I like the idea of acquiring him at a fair price, though. He'd make an excellent addition to this rotation.

He's already said he wouldn't with regards to Baltimore. (he or his agent, and I don't know who his agent is, maybe someone else does)

Whether it's Baltimore or free agency wasn't clear.

Maybe he'd be more willing to extend with us and be a part of another big three (Z, Prior, and Z)!

Check out what ATL paid last year for Hudson and you should get a good idea...

So...Hill, Patterson and Wuertz in place of Meyer, Charles Thomas and Cruz?

Hudson's much better. Beane may ask for a similar package, but I doubt that's what he gets for him. A lesser package that is similar in nature to the Hudson deal could be Hill, Dopirak, and someone like Petrick.

Hudson's much better.

I'm curious why you think Hudson is that much better than Zito.

Career numbers:

Hudson: WHIP 1.24, ERA 3.33, 6.37 K/9, 0.7 HR/9, 2.27 K/BB, .688 W%, 30 years old, righty, 34+ starts in three of last five years

Zito: WHIP 1.22, ERA 3.50, 7.03 K/9, 0.9 HR/9, 2.05 K/BB, .611 W%

27 years old, lefty, 5 straight years of 34+ starts

Outside of the winning percentage, the numbers are very similar and Zito is younger, a lefty, and has no history of recent health problems.

Plus, the price market for pitching has inflated from even last year...Zito won't be cheap.

Yours and Hendry's would be the only signature on THAT paper.
