Regarding the desirability of platooning Jones: we all know how high the Cubs are on Pie. I think he needs a full season at AAA, but....breaking him into the big leagues via a soft platoon with Jones would exactly the follow the Cubs MO. And for once, I think it would be the right plan.

Maybe Pie by June?

Are you talking about a Jones/Pie platoon? I have a real hard time seeing Dusty doing something like that, and I'm not sure it'd be the greatest thing for Pie to be facing almost strictly LHP in his first big league stint. Of course, this goes without saying that I prefer Pie not sniff the Majors till the AAA season is over.

Platooning Pie with Jones? I don't see how that is anything close to the right plan. They are both lefties for one. So, you are either going to let Felix only hit against lefties or let Jones sit against the only group of pitchers he can hit. Pie needs to get more professional at bats in AAA. If he dominates the league, then call him up and let him take somebody's job full time. He doesn't need the Corey Patterson treatment.

Sorry, meant platoon Pie with Murton, soft platoon--Murton plays against half the RHP (and of course, all the lefties), Pie gets half the RHP. Perez was my idea for a platoon partner with Jones.

If Bruce is still here, I saw the blurb early this week that the Cubs are interested in Eduardo Perez. I sure hope so, he would be an excellent addition to the Cubs bench. He plays corner IF and corner OF, and absolutely MASHES LHP. Perfect complement to Jones. Any info on the Cubs pursuit of Perez?

There might be some interest in Perez. I'll look into it.

Very good point. I don't think they'd sit him against all lefties. Dusty will look at his "matchups," I'm sure.

Well, since you brought up Dusty's "matchups", have you ever gotten a peak at Dusty's notes? If so, my only question would be.....

Are they done in crayon and are they in Darren's writing?

Nevermind. No need to respond. I think I already know the answer. :D

Agreed. I want him dominating AAA before he sniffs the bigs, regardless of how long that takes.

One last tidbit for Bruce maybe--saw an item today that Seattle would be interested in Corey Patterson for pitcher Gil Meche. Any truth to this, and/or are you working on any other info regarding Patterson, who by all indications is gone when the first attractive offer shows up?

A full time platoon w/ Jones would be great, but can't see it given the money & years. Perhaps they can get a guy who can face the lefties a third of the time though. Dusty does like to rest his guys. Jones can just come into the game in 7th or 8th as a defensive replacement.

The Cubs have the ideal platoon partner for Jones already on the roster.

His name is Matt Murton. Move Jones to LF so his defense can be a real plus.

They just need to get a full-time RF - preferably LHH - who can hit in the middle of the batting order.

Aubrey Huff.

After the extreme disappointment of last season, I find it hard to believe that Jim Hendry and Dusty Baker are willing to go into the season with Matt Murton and Ronny Cedeno both having essentially full-time roles.

No, that I find easy to believe.

Hendry absolutely has to get a platoon partner for Jones, since Jones' offense vs. LHP is at Jose Macias level. I don't think anyone here would be crazy enough to go into opening day with Macias as our projected starting RF vs. LHP's. A Jones/Perez platoon could provide decent production. I'll all for it.

I'd rather Pie play every day rather than once or twice a week against a lefty. If he got called up, Dusty would sit him. Especially with Murton and Cedeno already penciled in to be the starters.

I agree that Pie should stay the whole year in AAA unless he asolutely dominates there until about July.

And by dominate I don't mean just a high average and lots of doubles, HR. I'd like to see stats that show he isn't just having a year long lucky streak.

IsoP

BAIP

OBP that doesn't seem attatched to his BA-for instance, he hit about .300 .350 this year. If he hit .330 .380 that would't really show that he as any more patience.

Along with any other stats that I don't even know.

If Pie was ready in August say, what kind of line would you be pleased with to begin?

I'd say I'd be happy with .250 .320 .430

I can't imagine why you would put Huff in RF and Jones in LF. Jones is far and away the better defensive player.

Well if they are both in LF nothing should fall, but Pierre better cover a whole hell of a lot of ground to his right.

Two reasons.

One, Huff doesn't need a platoon partner; Jones does. Murton can only play LF.

Two, Jones in LF would be a top, top defender. In RF, he's only good.
