This just in! The Chicago Cubs have made an extroidinary announcement of a new on-field strategy for 2006. Nicknamed "Drunken Squirrals Swinging At A Nut", the entire team plans to get drunk before every single game, in the hopes that the intoxication will loosen the team up, and keep them from swinging at bad pitches. Newest Cub Jacque Jones has assured us though that he will play through the buzz, and strike out just as much as he always has.

More on this story, including Kyle Farnsworth and Rafeal Furcal demanding trades to the Cubs, at 10

Maybe they'll just lower the beer prices.

I still think there are options out there if Hendry cares to take advantage of them. I don't have a lot of confidence that he will though.

Wait, Bruce was pretty quiet, maybe a Tejada deal is in the works?

Well, i think the most important thing to do now is sign Eric Byrnes (who was just non-tendered by the Orioles) to platoon with Jones.

.298 .361 .524 .885

That's his 3 year splits against lefties.

Do a strict platoon, and we might get an .825 OPS out of RF. Still not good enough but better than the .775 we'll get if it's just Jones out there.

I'm hoping that jones was signed due to an imminent trade for Tejada or dunn or Manny or any player that would be a significant upgrade over a current Cub position player.

Anyone else severly depressed today? I didn't have one drink last night and yet I feel hungover.

Nope. I'm ready to go to work and think of ways to help the Cubs win games! :D

I worry that if we did sign Byrnes Dusty would play him over Murton.

With the loss of so many veterans and what seems like some internal problems at the Red Sox do you think they may start going young and building a team for a few years down the road?

If so, they seem to me to be a fantastic trading partner. They need a young centerfielder, we have one. They need young pitching, we have young pitching. So maybe a deal can be had in which we get Ramirez and Clement back for prospects and maybe a vet or two? If the O's weren't in the East I could see a three way going down involving Tejada. But perhaps that is just the fantasy owner in me!

I know that we can dream, but I think JH is determined not to trade Zambrano, Prior, or Pie and that's the only way we would get Tejada, Abrey, Dunn, or Manny. I think we can expect a smaller trade or a signing of a player that would help the bench and platoon in RF.

I really hope that Hendry swings the Tejada deal. Then when the board erupts in praise for the move all the people who complain that we do nothing but bash Hendry will stand down.

In addition, the pickup will be huge for the Cubs in 2006. They might actually be able to get by with the power outage in the outfield.

If I were the Cubs, right now, I'd sign Eric Byrnes to a $1.5m contract to be a 4th OF and platoon with Jones.

I'd offer Jeff Weaver $7.5m with a club option for $10m or a $1m buyout.

I'd offer Pie, Williams, Novoa, Welley and Patterson for Tejada.

I'd make every effort to sign Prior and Z throught their arb years to a fair contract.

I think the Cubs will, right now, do the following:

Trade Patterson for a PTBNL

Trade Welley for a PTBNL

Sign Jeff Conine to a $4m deal with a club option for 2007 or a $2m buyout to be the 4th OF and platoon with Jones.

Invite Kirk Rueter to ST as a NRI.

Offer Walker, Pie, Guzman and Cedeno for Tejada.

Extend Jim Hendry thru 2008.

From Rotoworld:

The Orioles and Jeff Conine have reportedly come to terms on a one-year deal worth about $1.75 million.

Conine chose Baltimore over Atlanta, where he wouldn't have been a regular. The Orioles could make him an everyday player in left field or at first base.

I wonder what Baltimore would really ask Hendry for? I'd like the Cubs to sing Weaver and Byrnes would be a nice choice to have as an extra OF. I wonder what the compitition is going to be like for him?

How much longer are Z and Prior under Cub control?

Delrious perhaps but I still think there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Whew. That's a good thing.

Meh, I think Murton is as good as gone. With the announcement that Walker is 3rd on the depth chart, there is no way Dusty starts Cedeno and Murton. Murton will go in a 3 way deal that sends Gathright to Florida, Murton to Tampa and Huff to Chicago.

My excitement for the 2006 season is completely in the toilet.

You know, that is something that's been in the back of my mind for a while, but I haven't really thought much of it. I was convince Jones or something similar would be the RF next year. And I've always doubted Murton and Cedeno will get a chance. I think Hendry will either trade Cedeno in a Tejada deal (which I'm fine with), and therefore keep Murton, or trade Murton in a LF deal, and keep Cedeno. The Cubs love to have depth at the mediocre position.

The Cubs didn't give Jones $16 million to platoon him. The Cubs will probably try to see what the O's want for Tejada, but I don't see Baltimore doing a deal for some of the names bandied about here. They probably want a big name in return. (If they were smart, they'd load up with prospects because I don't see them having much of a chance in 2006.) Beyond that, Hendry will try to move Walker and Patterson.

I feel the same way. In all honesty, if Cedeno goes for Tejada or Murton somehow is involved in a Dunn/Abreu deal than I am all for their departure. In fact, if we get any of those 3 players I will be able to live with Jones in the OF.

My best guess is a 4th OF, but I won't rule out a 5th starter.

A box of krispy kremes, and a 12 pack. Seriously, why in the world is Hendry so intent on trading our 3rd best hitter? Absolutely assanine.
