From the Carrie Muskat Mailbag this week:

Will Neifi Perez be starting at shortstop this year? After doing such a good job filling in for Garciaparra last year, I would think he'd be a great choice. Do the Cubs have other plans for him?

-- Edward K., Indianapolis, Ind.

Remember, Perez was originally signed to be a backup. The Cubs would like to give Ronny Cedeno a chance to be the starting shortstop. Cedeno was third in batting in the Venezuelan League this winter the last time I checked. Perez will get his at-bats.

Wow. Just wow.

Why didn't the Cubs re-sign Jeromy Burnitz for the RF job after the season? He was better than anyone in the free agency market!

Why did the Cubs let Jose Macias go? I thought he was doing a great job off the bench?

Carrie: I am having a hard time figuring that out as well, especially with Macias' success in the (whatever winter league he is in).

Poor Edward K. He has no idea everyone is making fun of him. All he wanted was an answer to his question.

I love the official team site and message board! It always seems to have the latest news and signings from around the league, and is rarely wrong!

I love it if I'm looking for a good laugh.

Hey Carrie, Is there any chance the Cubs can sign Johnny Damon for Center Field? That way Juan Pierre can move to right. I can't think of a better 1-2 punch at the top of the order.

When are we going to give Dusty the contract extension he deserves?! I'd give him 5 years without question, what he's done for this team is increadable. I'm so happy to have a players manager like him on board!

You know what I would really appreciate? I'd really like it if someone would interrupt my hitting on the drunk Trixie next to me so that I can cheer for Derrek Lee's at-bat. Afterward, I'll go back to hitting on her and you can just tap me on the shoulder when Derrek comes up again several innings later.

Poor Edward K not the only like this. This kid I go to school with is a Cubs fan so we are always talking about it. Hes a baseball player, so you figure he would be knowledgeable right? NO. Earlier in the offseason he thought that Niefi would be great at 2B. He brought up that he did so well early in the year. I don't remember exactly what he said, but here are several of the possibilities.

"He's a Gamer"

"He saved us last year"

"OBP doesn't mean anything, he hits for a pretty good average"

"Hes good at defense"

"5mil is a steal!"

He also thought (and I've talke to many people like this) who thought the Pierre trade was AMAZING. Now I like the Pierre trade. We overspent a little, and he alone won't save us. But the casual friend thinks we got the "best leadoff hitter in the game" for "nothing"

The Cubs offense isn't that bad, the only problem they had was too many strikeouts. All they need to do is put the ball in play more this year so they can strikeout less often. And to do that they should bunt more, or just choke up and slap at the first thing that is close to the strikezone. As much as it hurts to say it, the White Sox showed us how to win, HRs don't help as much as stolen bases, hustle and bunting. With Neifi and Pierre already there to add this element, all they need is somebody like Eric Young in RF to round out the lineup. Also, is Shawn Estes available, he won a lot of games before and is left handed, he's so much better than that stupidhead Wood (more like straw than Wood - get it, his ligaments are weak, and he isn't tough like real wood is and I don't even think he wants to get better mechanics, just like that bum Patterson who is happy striking out and doesn't want to learn to play better, wait, what was I talking about?)

Is it just me or does Neifi and Macias sound like a really good 1/2 leadoff combination?
