Why is signing Brian Giles unrealistic?

It just seems to me that there's quite a bit of circumstantial evidence that Giles told his agent, "I'm going back to SD. Get me the best deal you can.".

There's also a lot of circumstantial evidence that Hendry never tried, or at least never had serious interest in going that route. You're going to lose on free agents like we did with Furcal, but showing some effort to try to get the best option available for that position would be great.

Hendry has to address RF by trade, by free agency, or by minor leagues....and it seems you've discounted the first two options.

I don't discount the trade route. But a bunch of garbage/mediocrity for a superstar is not especially realistic.

I would have hoped that something like Williams, Novoa, and Ryu/Marmol might have been able to get Wilkerson from Texas, but it seems like Daniels may have developed an unnatural attachment to Wilkerson.

Hundley turned into Grudz. Garbage for quality player.

Bobby Hill turned into Aramis Ramirez. Garbage/Mediocrity for All-Star caliber player.

Choi for Lee. Garbage/Mediocity for arguably the best position player in the National League last season.

It happens. How is it therefore unrealistic?

perhaps it was because he knew giles only wanted to go back to SD. why sould he waste his time on talking to someone who's not interested in playing for the cubs?

The quote I recall from Hendry was "we are not going to get into a bidding war for Giles".

That's it. Didn't need to be a bidding war. Offer him 15m a year for 3 years, take it or leave it. Press catches wind and publishes it like just about every other rumor.

I think the real factor is that Hendry didn't want to spend 15m on a RFer because then he couldn't get the guy "he" really wanted, and that was Furcal.

I think he placed more value on a young lead off SS than a aging power-hitting RF.

One can't say Giles was realistic or not, one way or another. All we can do is speculate. I happen to believe Giles was realistic. "Was" being the key word at this juncture.

the only people who love Baker are shi**y veterans

No need to use asterisks in your profanity. We don't employ word censors here because we trust our members to adhere to the rules. I like being able to write the Cubs' bench coach's name without it being blocked. Do everybody a favor and help us keep the word censors off.

What do you suggest that Hendry should have done up to this point to address RF?

Please no unrealistic "sign Brian Giles" or "three way trade where we give up Rich Hill and Jerome Williams, Barry Zito goes to the Phillies and we get Bobby Abreu" nonsense.

Realistic stuff, please.

Why is sign Brian Giles unrealistic?

And why is the other one unrealistic?

Becuse you don't think so? Who are you? Do you have some inside information that nobody else has?

And once again Hendry really screwed himself by setting his sights on one thing this offseason. I really hope Hendry does have a plan, and I want to believe he does, but just the way things have gone the past year, things are not looking good...

Don't worry, Burnitz will still be available in February.

That doesn't help us one bit. We can't negotiate with him until May 1. If we're needing him and he's still around then, we won't be.

Not to repeat what has been said in my absence, but what would you prefer that I suggest? What is realistic?

I mean, its easy to look back with 20-20 vision now and say nothing was realistic (though I agree that Giles probably never intended to leave teh Coast), but how can I possibly know? Dunn and Kearns were realistic. Abreu was less so, but if JH wanted him, he could have worked at beating down Gillick's door. The Phils opening salvo was Prior. OK, lets make a counter.

Sorry, I forgot we can't get him til May. I was being sarcastic anyway. He sucks.

At this point we just have to slap together whatever short term/cheap RF we can and PRAY that the Phillies flop so badly out of the gate that they try to get Abreu's $13 million off the books before the trading deadline.

Corey and Hildago platoon would be hilarious. Combine Corey's .254 OBP with Hildago's .289 ... those bases would not get clogged. They would be squeeky clean.

I would have done my Don Corleone imitation and made Giles an offer he can't refuse.

I would have put the head of Jose Macias in his bed.

That's going to replace the whale in my nightmares.

If we're going to keep Patterson around, why not sign Richard Hidalgo to be a platoon partner.

He often gets frustrated when he can't find the secret passageway, ultimately leading to his failure to catch the ball.

He needs the red candle

This is just speculation but I do think Hendry had inside info that Giles would not leave SD/the west coast at any cost. I base my specualtiuon on the following: In the end, how many teams actually offered Giles a deal? Not many, IIRC. And how many of those offers beat the one he took from SD? Most, if not all, again IIRC. Although Hendry did seem to put all of his focus into signing Furcal, I also believe resigning Neifi was his fall-back in case Furcal went elsewhere. Not saying it was a good fall-back, just that Hendry did not count his Furcal chickens before they hatched.

We are hearing there are two trade offers on the table right now from Jim that possibly involve getting a RF. I'm still trying to stay positive that JH won't dissappoint us before the season starts.
