Wow, that seams like a lot of talent for Pierre who will probably be here for 1 year. Hendry is set on getting a leadoff man. I would prefer Bradley over Pierre though.

If the A's are offering Zito for Bradley, what should Hendry offer?

Cubs hopeful of landing Pierre

GM Hendry confirms meeting with Marlins, mum on deal

By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com

MLB Headlines

DALLAS -- The Chicago Cubs may be close to getting their leadoff man.

The Cubs, who lost in the bidding for free agent Rafael Furcal, are believed to be the front-runners for Florida Marlins center fielder Juan Pierre. The Texas Rangers also are in the mix for Pierre, who batted .276 in 162 games with the Marlins in 2005.

good lord, no.

possibly our top three minor league arms for one year of a .680 OPS? if true, i have no faith in hendry. none.

I don't care about Pierre's SLG% as much as other do, but if his OPB is below .360 next year then we overpaid.

I'll take it. With Pierre leading off, who hits second? With Dusty in charge, it's gotta be a righty, so maybe, just MAYBE, Murton or Cedeno?

If he has any clue about how best to maximize the lineup, then it should be Murton.

so... basically what you're saying is Murton bats 7th next year.

8th. Definitely. Gotta maximize that 8th spot. It's a weakness in most other lineups, but in the Cubs lineup? It's as good as a solid 2hole hitter.

well, at least he's setting the table for Z and Prior.

Getting Pierre keeps Neifi out of the leadoff spot. I won't be mad if his obp is .370 either.

And what if it's .326 like it was last year?

That's the chances you have to take. At least it's about .200 points better than Patterson right? ;)

why is that a chance you have to take? that makes no sense.

The A's were offering Kirk Sarloos, not Zito, for Bradley but are said to be out of the discussions at this time.

Which means it will be Neifi.

I love how two of you posted Dusty-bashing jokes about the order at the exact same time, and they both made complete sense. :D

That was one rumor. The other and more prominent rumor was for Mario Ramos and Saarloos. IF we are giving up two pretty good prospects I would rather have Bradley.

I think I figured out his reasoning for batting Macias and Perez 1 and 2 whenever he did. He wanted the best hitting pitching staff in the league, RBI wise.

His thinking will be figured out eventually, but we have made great strides today.

From Hendry's point of view, Pierre is the safest available move he could make for the "leadoff" spot. Bradley is a little injury prone, and a possible ticking time bomb. Wilkerson probably strikes out too much and doesn't have enough speed. Lugo plays a position they like Cedeno and Neifi for. So, from Hendry's point of view, Pierre makes sense. He holds CF for 2006, ensuring Pie doesn't get rushed like Corey, he has speed, has a track record as a leadoff guy, and has the illusion of being good defensively.

I know a lot of people are opposed to getting Pierre because of his down year last year, among other reasons, but consider his OBP in days games the last few years.

2005: .374 (70 point difference between day and night)

2004: .414 (60 point difference)

2003: .393 (40 point difference)

Career: .394 (60 point difference)

I never knew this but it looks like he's always been a pretty solid player in day games. Go get him Jim!

All this for a potential stop-gap?

If Pierre was the missing piece, god bless them. But, Pierre would need to look his left to find the impact that makes the difference.

B/c, you could get away with a less productive RF'er if they acq'd Bradley, Wilkerson, or even Michaels. If they get Pierre they'll have to go get an elite RF'er. Someone like Huff or Jones won't cut it.

Huh. News to me.

Perhaps they think that between Lee, ARam and Barrett, they have enough power to get by, but need OBP from the top 2 slots, and feel that all they need is a 6 hole hitter from RF.

Just trying to think like Hendry.

beggers can't be choosers. Not all of our minor league arms are going to make it on the 5 man rotation on the Cubs.

I would rather have Bradley in CF but if Hendry did trade for Pierre it would be taking a step in the right direction, so I'm not opposed to it. Pierre would improve this team.

No doubt you're correct, but I think Nolasco AND Pinto might be a tad too much. I think it might not be the best use of those 2 in a deal.

Having said that, if it goes down, at least we filled one hole in the lineup.

the cubs don't have to be beggars, that's the thing. walker would be just as capable as a leadoff guy next year, and he won't cost the cubs half the farm.
