  1. I'm not sure how hiring say, Joe Girardi, would be a sign that the Cubs don't want to win now. I'm also not willing to give Hendry any credit for hiring someone to "win now" as that's as much an effort to save his own job as anything else. Furthermore, it could potentially make a bad situation worse. When the GM is desparate to win now that's when the worst trades tend to transpire. Garland for Karchner for example.
  2. In defense of soccer, didn't the NFL struggle mightily in its first few seasons? The NFL didn't have to compete with the same number of established pro sports that MLS does. What they did have to compete with was college football which was more established and people believed it was technically better and somehow more pure. I believe that MLS probably can't ever establish itself as a major sport league unless they make some changes that a lot of soccer pruists probably wouldn't like such as: 1 Play their games at night so people can see them 2 play their games during the week so that they don't have to compete with football 3 Find a way to increase scoring
  3. Hockey Fever?
  4. He told the players in his lineup that they didn't really need to score runs.
  5. That's not true. Methusela was actually a senior during Lou's freshman year so Methusela is probably 3 years older.
  6. , Taking pitches and drawing walks swinging away and hitting the ball like a man :x
  7. It certainly looks like you were right. Could this be another piece of the Hendry M.O.? Hire a high-profile, well-known manager to take all the heat away from the poor personnel decisions. I think it's more a case of risk avoidance. Since Jim is on the hot seat he doesn't want his bosses to see him take a chance on anyone who's not a big name and "proven". If the team disappoints again Jim can say he got the most provenest manager on the market, so the choice of manager was not to blame. Also I just think Jim is a sucker for big names and big reputations. I think the last statement there sums everything up. Too bad that doesn't ring true for players as well. What about Juan Pierre? Didn't Hendry get him because of his reputation? How about Jacques Jones?
  8. The Case for Piniella: He's a proven winner that will be a strict disciplinarian to light a fire under the team when necessary. During the playoff telecasts he's said some very mixed things. He doesn't pay attention to stats but seems to have an understanding of some important concepts: -He likes it when guys get on base "Sooner or later these baserunners (for Oakland are going to score) - I was also struck by this comment "You have to manage the team that you have. Ken Macha doesn't have guys that can bunt or steal bases so they don't do much of that" The Case against Piniella: He has shown an almost criminal preference for veteran players. At his age he would prefer a veteran team yet the Cubs look to be very young even if they bring in 2 veteran bats. He doesn't pay much attention to stats which means he'd be a lot like the last 2 Cubs' managers. On a team that going into the season is expected to finish last, how can you possibly justify playing mediocre- terrible vets over raw but talented rookies? Piniella's not my first choice but I don't believe he'll be the disaster that everyone fears- unless of course Hendry goes Ed Lynch on us and strip mines the farm system to save his job. Hendry may or may not do that anyway regardless of who's managing the Cubs.
  9. See, this is where we differ. I'd like all Cubs players to be required to sport handlebar moustaches. A return to wool uniforms is also in order. "Throw your best apple, hurler"
  10. Adam Melhuse sighting. Remember when people thought he could play catcher? Neifi batting 2nd- further proof that managers like Leyland never look at stats- ever.
  11. There's no real hurry. Not that it would be that great of a loss, but someone might claim Walrond. It's probably better to wait until right before the Rule 5 draft that way a lot of other teams will be trying to clear roster space.
  12. Dear Lou Piniella, The Cubs are a young team that is trying to build for the future as well as win now. Please tell us you're not interested. Sincerely, Cubs fans
  13. Perhaps we're looking at this backwards. All of the candidates I've heard mentioned have multiple options available. Brenly might be waiting to see what happens with SF. Girardi might prefer the opportunity to stick it to Florida on a more regular basis. They might all be waiting to see what Piniella does. I believe Hendry knows who he wants but that person, unlike Dusty Baker, has other options to weigh before he decides.
  14. Interesting comments from Lou Piniella and Steve Lyons If they're not careful, they're going to be labeled stat geeks. Perhaps that's why they kept lamenting Oaklands lack of speed.
  15. I remember once seeing a This Week in Baseball where they did a story about the guy that wrote the Baseball Encyclopedia. I have no idea what his name is but he had a ritual when attending games. On the way to the park he'd buy a pack of baseball cards to see which team had more cards in the pack. Whoever had more won the game. He claimed that it always worked for the Royals (This story was done during the late '80s
  16. Like giving a decent prospect for Neifi Perez or Phil Nevin. Or giving Christian Guzman a big contract. The list is a long one. Dempster is a proven closer, GMs like that tag. Unfortunately, Hendry is one of them.
  17. I wish I had a pencil thin Listach, then I could solve a mystery too.
  18. Wouldn't it be great if Joe Torre announced his retirement today?
  19. What's the over/ under on seasons before Piniella gets fired as Yankees manager? I'm guessing 2 1/2.
  20. A's win World Series. Jim Hendry says "See, that O-B-T or whatever it's called isn't important afterall. They won the series with clutch hitting."
  21. I think the atmosphere revolved around winning. Good teams have good atmosphere. Bad teams typically don't have very large crowds. It really depends on where you are. The biggest difference bewteen the two is that the average age of the fans is younger at a college game.
  22. He'd be a significant upgrade over Pierre slg % wise. I agree with the 2nd part
  23. What Conservatives want in order of importance fiscal responsibility strong on national defense someone that can win end of list There might be a tiny section of the GOP that wouldn't embrace an African American female candidate. The same is also true for the DNC by the first criteria, Bush has been a nightmare, eh? Absolutely, which is why I believe that fiscal responsibility is much more important to the core of the Republican party than any other issue. Perhaps that's why polls are currently showing that Guiliani would win the nomination.
  24. I guess Pete Rose is out then. :D
