  1. Hitting for Power by Juan Pierre Playing Shallow by Angel Pagan The Truth about my Injury by Mark Prior
  2. Getting back to the original question- as I doubt anyone here really *wants* to trade Murton- right now many teams would like to have him but would not be willing to give up very much to get him. I really believe that Hendry, if he trades an OF, will trade Pie the day after he re signs Pierre to a 3 year extension. :wall:
  3. There are 2 options for this computer simulation. If you have a "AI" computer, who learns from mistakes, etc. Something like the computers and programs IBM developed to beat chess masters. A computer like that, I think would fare much better overall in a long-term competition. Speaking of Kasparov vs. IBM, In the matches against Deep Blue, Kasparov tried to outsmart the computer by making some unconventional moves. It didn't work because the computer wasn't bothered by Kasparov's unexpected moves. I would like to see the human vs computer to see how it would affect the human managing against the computer.
  4. The Cubs have had 2 first picks right? Dunstan and Montenez? Montanez was 3 overall. Who went 1-2 that year? That may illustrate the end to finish "ahead" of the D-Rays & Royals.
  5. With all the top 5 picks and comp picks they've had they should have a lot of good prospects
  6. Rangers sign FA Juan Pierre Cubs sign FA Gary Matthews JR Cubs get Teixiera Rangers get Murton and Jones
  7. No Brian Roberts or Bedard in that deal?
  8. That has nothing to do with the protest, it's an Oriole fan tradition to emphasize the O in the anthem. That's right. It's just like going to Illinois hockey games and saying "Chief" every time the ref made the signal for icing.
  9. I think it really depends on who is the Democratic nominee. Giuliani and Rice are still more conservative than Clinton and probably Edwards. Also I think fiscal responsibility is a bigger issue with both sides than msot people think. Personally I'd like to see someone that isn't going to spend as much money. That usually means a Republican but the Bush Administration has spent money like never before. If Giuliani can convince the voters that his policies will be fiscally sound that will be good enough for most true conservatives. Furthermore, for people that have strong feelings about abortion if they don't vote Giuliani they probably won't vote at all. The swing votes he would likely get should more than make up for that.
  10. Didn't the Red Sox also have 3+ former Cubs? Bellhorn, Mueller and a relief pitcher or something?
  11. I don't really see where these numbers are all that conclusive. If you take away the 3 game sweep early in the year against the Cards, the Cubs were at or below .500 to everyone that they've play more than 3 times except the Reds. It's not that the Cubs play well against good teams so much as they occassionally play well enough to beat anybody they play.
  12. I would hate a manager like that. A manager should have to explain himself to the GM when asked, unless the GM is asking him about every little thing. If Joe can't handle a superior asking him why he did something it doesn't speak well for his ability to work within the hierarchy of an organization. This bolded part is the key. No one likes having a micromanaging fool constantly looking over their shoulder. Given their unexpected success on the field, Loria should shut up and let Girardi manage. As far as the Cubs situation goes, I'd want a manager that is at odds with Hendry because I don't agree with much, if anything, of Hendry's baseball philosophy.
  13. I've had trouble with it off and on this summer. It looks like they have a new home page. The Heckler hasn't been as good this season. Perhaps they're mailing it in as a sign of solidarity with the Cubs roster.
  14. For all his speed, Bynum has shown very little range at 2nd base. I don't really mind him getting PT. The more he gets the more chances he has to show that he's not the answer at 2nd base. I would like to see what he could do in CF.
  15. If you look at his last 5 seasons or so, he's put up a .750 ish OPS. He'd certainly be an improvement over Pierre even if he reverts to his typical season. Of course that probably says just as much about Pierre as it does about GMjr. On a related note, does it seem like hitting for the cycle is not as big an accomplishment as it used to be?
  16. Could the Cubs trade him if he wasn't injured?
  17. You want to count on Roinson being catcher over Fox because of 12 hot games for Daytona? If Fox can't play adequate defense at catcher than 3rd base is the best option in terms of maximizes his value. The idea being that its easier to find a power hitting corner OF than power 3rd baseman. Robinson seems to be a defense first catcher. Is his ceiling ~ Joe Girardi type production? Does Robinson start the year at AA? Fox most certainly will. If they are both there something has to give.
  18. I was speaking of position player prospects...not pitching prospects. And you shouldn't assume I'm basing my whole argument on the article I quoted from. Dayn Perry thought he was the 10th best catching prospect in MiLB. How many Minor legaue catchers do you suppose played this year? The top 10 of that number is pretty elite. Here are Fox's stats this year Team-------avg---HR--RBI---obp---slg------ops DAY FSL --.313---16--61----.383---.574--- .957 WTN SOU- .269----5--25----.304---.435--- .739 Minors---- .294-- 21- 86--- .350---.514--- .864 That kind of production from the catcher spot is pretty good. It certainly becomes less spectacular from a corner OF. If he proves that he can stick at catcher I could see a lot of teams interested in Fox.
  19. I'm not the one that called Fox a top prospect...which he is not. The only thing close to a top prospect in the Cubs system is Pie. Whether Fox is a top prospect or not is debatable. To argue that he is not based on incorrect information is not a good idea. As for the second part, I'd say that at the very least Veal is a top prospect- particularly if Jim Callis is making the list.
  20. If Hendry could lose 20 lbs would that make him a better GM? If the Cubs made the playoffs would you mind if Hendry was Jabba the Hutt?
  21. There's nothing wrong with not closely following the Cubs minor league prospects but you should know that there are a lot of people here that do. With that in mind it's unwise to make a general comment about someone like Fox based on a 6 month old scouting report or stats that aren't up to date. Unless of course you enjoy being proven wrong or being made to look foolish.
  22. The Jay Mariottis of the world will never forgive Hendry if he doesn't at least offer the job to Girardi.
  23. I think it depends on the new manager and what they do with the rest of the bench. Theriot seems to have earned a spot as utility infielder. Pagan does make a decent 4th OF. Having both of those guys on the bench eliminates the need for Bynum's speed- the only tool he possesses. The silver lining, even if Bynum and Pagan make the team, is that neither are making any money and are therefore easily expendable for more attractive bench options. If Soto replaces Blanco- as he should- the Cubs have the luxury of having half their bench set for less than they paid Perez.
  24. They are out of options due to spending 3 years on the 40 man roster with their former teams. They could be sent to the minors but would have to clear waivers. That could be done at the end of ST. Bynum clears pretty easily. Pagan probably doesn't. Not only do they not have enough time to be arb. eligible, they cannot ask for their release.
  25. To the casual fan (ie people that go by traditional stats and listen to BBTN analysts) losing Pierre is just as bad as losing Ramirez. When I listen to opposing teams' radio guys on XM they universally priase Pierre and believe the Cubs "have" to bring him back. Evidently, there must be a secret 7th place that only people "in the game" know about.
