  1. The NFL is better than college football because there is more parity. In college football its basically the same 4-8 schools every year competing for the national championship. Three years ago the Bears and Bengals were among the 2 worst teams in football, now they could potentially face each other in the Superbowl.
  2. Hendry's friends with the Marlins org are bad mouthing Girardi and He believes them. But Hendry knows that a large portion of the fan base - as well as some of the beat writers- want Girardi. Perhaps Hendry is dragging his heels in the hopes that some other team will let him off the hook regarding Girardi.
  3. It will be easier to find a CF that can hit for more power, get on base more than to find a MI to do the same. So it makes more sense to fill one of those holes at 2nd or SS with Theriot than to try and move him to the OF. Theriot historically has shown very little power. It's unlikely he'd hit for enough power to be a significant upgrade over Pierre. His ideal spot would be SS if he could handle it defensively.
  4. I'm really hoping for a Padres- A's WS so that no one East of the Grand Canyon will watch any of it. :x
  5. I thought this thread was going to be about Joe Morgan actually having something to say that wasn't complete gibberish. To paraphrase: "You can't control the Yankee lineup, you just have to not hurt yourself in the process. OK, you gave up a HR but make sure you don't walk guys ahead of that HR. A few solo HRs aren't going to hurt you." Granted there's a lot of old school wisdom in those remarks but for Joe Morgan I'm always surprised when he has something to say that doesn't make me want to throw a brick at the TV.
  6. I hate the sac bunt 1. No one seems to know how to do it therefore there's no guarantee that it will be executed properly. 2. Even on the occassions when it works it usually still requires someone to get a hit. 3. If you have a player that can work the count in his favor he might draw a walk 4. It's defeatist and demoralizing. You're telling the player that he can't be trusted to get on base. You're also admitting that the opposing pitcher has some sort of power over you. I can accept the close and late arguments. That shouldn't happen more than 20 times a year.
  7. Without looking up stats it seems like Santo has the best credentials of anyone on that list.
  8. I genuinely miss Steve Stone's dry sense of humor. I could see him giving Len a lot of grief which would liven up the broadcaster. I pretty much hate all color commentators that aren't Steve Stone. Granted Steve Stone is old school but that might balance really well with Len's point of view.
  9. If the Gold Glove is determined by offense why not the CY Young?
  10. That was a funny no-hit bid. A few errors cost the Orioles a run there. Some of them might have been hits had the situation been different.....which got me thinking. A no-hit bid late in the game vs. a guy in the midst of a 30+ game hit streak. Who would get the benefit of the doubt between a close error/hit call by the official scorer? Whoever played for the home team.
  11. I'm starting to think that the best case scenario is the Cards barely make the playoffs. Hopefully they get swept in the 1st round. Much as I dislike the Cards, I'm tired of Clemens. His presence and the "HOFer Heroic's carries his team" storyline will make the playoffs that much more unwatchable.
  12. Over/under on how many times he correctly predicts the hitter K's on a slider low and away? fixed
  13. So you'd prefer to think that she has no integrity to just plain not knowing much about baseball?
  14. "In that situation I'd have my pitcher lay down a sac. bunt" - Neifi Perez
  15. What about next week? ;) "About time" would seem more appropriate
  16. I want Matt Murton to bat 2nd. I never want him to bunt. Ever. Never ever. it is a bit short sighted to say that any player should never bunt. bunting can be a big part of the game if used properly. i've seen puljos bunt and if he can do it so can murton (in the right situation). As a Cub fan I wish Pujols would sac bunt more often. If he was on my team, I would never have Pujols sac bunt in any circumstance. Now if you have a terrible hitter like Freddie Bynum up in that situation I could see where it might be tempting to have him try to lay down a sac bunt.
  17. I'm pretty much always optimistic before the season starts. A lot has to happen for the Cubs to be good but in a way they are actually better now than they were on opening day 2006. For example: *Hendry's not going to rely on pitchers that he's knows aren't going to be healthy *A lot of young players got valuable experience this year that they could benefit from down the line *some of the dead weight (Perez and Rusch) is already gone *What was a bad division this year doesn't look like it's going to get any better.
  18. To me it comes down to this: Tim McCarver is the Ryne Sandberg of horrible announcers to Joe Morgan's Roberto Alomar. The stats may show that Alomar is better (Not trying to make that point) but I will always believe that Sandberg was the better player. Tim McCarver has been so bad for so long; that's got to count for something! Tim McCarver invented hyperbole. Before McCarver we would never have known that a single stitch on a players sock can be the difference between winning ang losing the world series.
  19. Why would Rusch retire? If Rusch doesn't retire, the Cubs still have to pay his salary. This will be a lot like Mo Vaughn or Bagwell both of which chose to collect money from their teams even though they couldn't physically perform. The only question is whether it will count against the 2007 salary.
  20. School children walking to class leaves turning brown a crisp breeze on a sunny day Manny Ramirez demanding to be traded Ah, the signs of fall
  21. How about easy listening? Losing on a Sunday afternoon reeling couldn't get away too soon I never thought we'd be this bad ryan dempster really makes me sad I sure hate that dusty how can he play mabry?
  22. I want Matt Murton to bat 2nd. I never want him to bunt. Ever. Never ever. Not even with a runner on second with 0 outs playing for 1 run? No. Someone that uses the whole field like Murton should try hitting it to RF with a chance to either advance the runner or drive him in. If he bunts they walk the next hitter to set up the inning ending double play. Also, the bunt allows one chance to drive the run in with a sac. fly as opposed to an extra chance to drive the run in with a hit.
  23. Lost in all of this is the bizarre nature of someone has ugly as Jay Gibbons actually being married.
  24. The Cub's manager is a risk reward situation. If you win they'll name a street after you. If you lose you will be in good company and can fall back on the "no one can win here" excuse. The only problem with taking the Cubs job is getting re hired.
  25. Actually, I'm pretty sure that the AL East has been Yankees, Red Sox, Jays, Orioles, D-Rays in that order each of the last 5 years.
