  1. To the tune of Berserker from the movie Clerks My love for you is like a truck Kent Mercker Won't you like some striking out Kent Mercker
  2. Last night ESPN aired "The top 5 reasons you can't blame Steve Bartman for 2003". I know they've probably shown this before but this was the first time I've seen it. A few comments: 1 I thought ESPN did a good job placing the blame where it really belonged 2 Our own Bruce Miles really lit into Dusty Baker and rightfully so 3 I was disappointed that they didn't mention that Moises Alou has never gone into the stands to catch a ball in his whole life. 4 While I'm glad they blamed Bernie Mac I really wished they could have not played up the cursed angle as much as they did
  3. Even if it was the complete opposite of defeatist, it wouldn't contribute to the Cubs getting to the World Series. I don't think much of this. As these sites become more and more popular, you are going to have a firethecoach.com sites bought up the minute anybody is hired, or even rumored to be a candidate. Has anyone tried to sell Soriano on ebay yet?
  4. Yeah, thats a lot of errors in a short period of time. Is his fielding going to be a barrier to making it as a utility guy? McGehee was drafted as a catcher so he has that on his resume to help as far as being a utility guy goes. He also played a few games at 2nd base which also helps. As far as the errors go, I always take errors in winter ball with a grain of salt because the fields aren't always in very good condition. His errors for the minor league season should give a much better indication of what his defense is really like.
  5. The only thing Adam Eaton has going for him is that at least he's somebody most fans have heard of and probably don't realize that he's not very good.
  6. Oberweis skim is better tasting than most 2% They used to sell a 1/2% at the Food Lion but now I buy 1% as a compromise.
  7. Has anyone actually seen Negron and Pagan at the same place at the same time? :chin:
  8. Maybe the notion that he doesn't have a position is playing a part. Perhaps he'll be thrown in a trade to an AL team. Don't see how one can judge that based on an injury-plagued year. This is trade low, I wouldn't trade Dopirak right now at all. And Brian is still on the 40-man. EDIT: I agree with what Craig said in regards to Fox, this is an indictment on Jake's chances of sticking at C. Which part? From everything I've ever read, Dopirak's Defense has been below average or a work in progress. He doesn't have the speed to play anywhere else (unless they can turn him into a catcher) Trading Dopirak now is better than letting him go for nothing which seems very likely to happen. With Fox perhaps done as a catcher it seems logical that the Cubs would try him at 1st. With McGahee and Moore also in the running at 1st Dopirak might seem expendable.
  9. It's too late now for that to do him any good. Apologies must be immediate and sincere. Look at Pete Rose, for years people said "If he'd just admit it..." then once he did he was villified for not doing it sooner. By admitting corking his bat or taking steroids he betrays the faith of those that have supported him. What will help Sosa is time. When talk of steroids eventually goes away, he will be accepted again. No one cares that he corked his bat.
  10. Doesn't matter. The last team he played for was the Cubs so therefore he is a returning FA. Also, I don't see the Cubs signing more than 2 more A or B FAs. One FA Pitcher and Perhaps one FA bat with the rest of the holes filled through trades.
  11. Wasn't Russ Grimm a football player? Bronco Nagurski is the best football name.
  12. Maybe the notion that he doesn't have a position is playing a part. Perhaps he'll be thrown in a trade to an AL team.
  13. I haven't seen Odibe McDowell I always thought Johnny Ray was a cool name for a baseball player. But no list like this is complete without Larry Biittner, with not one but two superfluous letters in his name!
  14. You can't hang the loss of Drew on Coletti, that wasn't his contract. Depodesta made that stupid contract, similar to A-Ram's He did sign Juan though.... Of course he could have just resigned Drew and not whined about being betrayed.
  15. Compared to the money that some other players are getting, Jones looks pretty cost effective at ~ $5 million/per. That, coupled with some good traditional stats, should make his value pretty high. Why would a team pay more for a one year rental than they would for a player they can control for two seasons?
  16. Are the Quad City River Bandits still around?
  17. How many of those teams had a regular #5 hitter? It seems to me that there's a difference bewteen the #5 spot in the order vs player X who drove in 95+ runs. That being said, I can't help thinking that this discussion is pointless in the context of the original post ie. that 95 rbi out of the leadoff spot is very good.
  18. http://www.catsthatlooklikehitler.com
  19. Definitely not something new. Don't have a link on it for ya, though. Probably you've not heard of it because teams hardly ever reach their limit- especially the Cubs. I'd also bet that money has more to do with not signing 5 type A FAs than any league imposed limit.
  20. Wasn't Eyre a big Dusty fan? Seems like he would want out. OTOH, Ohman probably has more value by being cheaper and younger.
  21. 95 RBIs are good from any spot in the lineup I completely disagree. 95 RBI from the 3/4/5 spot is below average. Most teams get much more than that from those spots in the order, and most of the guys who hit in those spots play everyday, or close to it. I'll give you the 3/4 hitters but I'd bet most #5 hitters don't drive in 95 RBIs.
  22. He feels the same way Ed Lynch did When he was traded to the last place Cubs from the eventual World Champion Mets.
  23. Just out of sheer morbid curiosity, which first basemen do you see as being better than Bagwell? Lou Gehrig wasn't too bad. Jimmy Fox won back to back MVPs though I don't know too much else about him.
  24. I wonder if the Orioles would do Marshall, Guzman and Pie for Bedard. That seems like a starting point for Bedard.
  25. No, resigning your own FAs doesn't count agisnt the limit Hendry said he wants to add 2 bats. Unless Derosa counts I'd guess it was easier to find another RF than CF Jones will be traded but perhaps he'll start the season in CF while they wait to see what Pie does at AAA Schmidt has stated his preference for the West Coast from day 1. I've not heard that Hendry was ever interested in Zito.
