  1. Know what's really bad for team morale? Losing almost 100 games. I don't care about any "clubhouse cancer issues". Will he be expensive? THe Cubs are increasing payroll to add a hitter and Bonds-when healthy-is much better than any of the other names available via FA. I don't care about how much Bonds will cost. Can Bonds really be counted on to play 100 games next season? That to me seems like a big question mark. As far as rooting for Bonds is concerned, personally I'd rather see him not break the record but if he's going to anyway it might as well be in a Cubs uniform.
  2. Personally, I think it's a conspiracy to put Bonds on the Yankees.
  3. Perhaps all the talk about being aggressive was his way of defending his players that were aggressive hitters. Protect them from what? I don't want a manager protecting the flaws of players, I want him helping to eliminate those flaws, or, at the very least, limit those flaws. I never said it was a good thing.
  4. That's too bad. Brenly is a pretty bad partner for someone like Kasper.
  5. Perhaps the image of the Steve Martin atrocity has made people forget about Peter Seller's brilliance.
  6. in the Cubs booth if he takes the job with the Giants?
  7. Perhaps Joe Girardi replaces Bob Brenly in the Cubs booth if/when Brenly gets the Giants job.
  8. Brantley might not be as bad with one team to focus on. It's a lot harder to comment on the whole league and know what you're talking about. PLus, in a 3 man booth he won't have to carry as much of the load.
  9. Perhaps all the talk about being aggressive was his way of defending his players that were aggressive hitters. Just like the "clogging the bases" comment was his way of saying that he'd rather have Alou swing away than wlk since it would take 3 hits to score him.
  10. If Eckstein put up an .800 OPS would he still be scrappy? Is there an equivalent to the Mendoza Line for grittiness? I think it should be OPS< .700 = scrappy, gritty, gamer or whatever the cliche dujour is for Ecksteinian play.
  11. I'm wondering which side wanted to end FA comp picks. It seems to me it can only help the players by encouraging teams to offer arbitration. On the flip side, I've never heard of any team that didn't sign a player because they didn't want to give up draft picks.
  12. How to get a Head in advertising though I doubt many have seen it.
  13. She's stripper from Vegas that wears a chefs hat. He's that British comedian that doesn't talk hardly ever He's the Brawny Paper Towel guy
  14. Team Baseball: All or most of the players making some sort of positive contribution to a winning effort. Evidently, if Albert Pujols hits three HRs it's not as good as David Eckstein laying down 3 perfect squeeze bunts because Eckstein gave himself up for the team whereas Pujols is just a glory hound that should have hit sac flies instead.
  15. I think this has more to do with the talent level of the organization as a whole than what Baker did or didn't want. Before Baker the Cubs were bad. Getting players from Asia helped rebuild the farm system. The Cubs became good. Now that they are bad again they need to rebuild the farm system so they are back in Asia.
  16. Clerks Young Frankenstein The Producers (The original with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel) Team America World Police
  17. Congratulations to the Cards for winning the 2006 WS. Now that I live in Maryland I don't have to hear it from the obnoxious southern Illinois Card's fans so I guess it's not the end of the world. What really annoys me though is that when Jeff Weaver wins the series clinching game against the Tigers the Cards will still be smart enough to realize that he's Jeff Weaver and they won't feel obligated to bring him back. So when he remembers that he's Jeff Weaver and starts to stink again it will probably be for the Cubs.
  18. How do you compare a comedy like American Pie with horror movies like Saw I, II & III or Jaws etc. ? Would Jay & Silent Bob constitute a Franchise?
  19. FJM had an article from some sportswriter that thought Dusty was a good fit for the A's.
  20. How will Detroit's young pitchers hold up this late in the season? It's pretty much uncharted territory for them. Is Zumaya available for this series? One advantage for the Tigers that no one really talks about is that they won't suffer as much for not having a DH in the NL park.
  21. I could see all 3 of those guys staying or leaving or retiring. Predictions: Nic retires after next season. Monty gets signed by somebody else Sing becomes the next David Kelton
  22. I'm no fan of Jones, but I've always been curious why some posters seem to have a "personal" hatred for Jones instead of just hating his contract -- which isn't his fault. It probably has something to do with his comments about how great the Twins fans were-both of whom were very nice to Jones, apparently- which implied that Cubs fans sucked.
  23. Wasn't Perez leading off or hitting 2nd in most of the games he started? Leyland probably had to play Perez with Polanco out but he sure didn't have to put him at the top of the order.
  24. Because the 2010 super bowl decides the champion for the season that starts in 2009, making this the rare occasion when Roman numerals are actually less confusing.
  25. Let me ask you -- If your the owner of the Cubs and (by all indications) are about to spend 115 mil. wouldn't you want to bring in a season vet manager opposed to a 2nd year manager? I was just using Girardi as an example. While we're on the subject, would the Cubs increase payroll if Girardi was hired? I'm less concerned with Lou Piniella being the Cubs manager than I am with Hendry being the GM. Is it really a good idea to try to fix what seems like a very broken Cubs team in one off season? Of course everyone wants the Cubs to win next season but at what cost?
