  1. Which Joe is the worst announcer ever? The case against Joe Morgan is well documented. As for Theisman, I should probably thank him for reminding me about hurricane Katrina every 5 seconds for the first half of last night's game. Mike Tirrico: "Ron Mexico is 2-12 passing" Joe: "In wake of hurricane Katrina, it's hard for him to complete passes, especially since he has to run on the top of his legs." Tony K: "What else would he run on top of????"
  2. I want Matt Murton to bat 2nd. I never want him to bunt. Ever. Never ever.
  3. I disagree. Teams settle for defense only catchers because they have no other choice. Many teams would love to get a player that provide what Barrett does offensively. AL teams in particular that could keep his bat in the lineup would be very eager.
  4. I think it would take Marshall and Pie.....or if the Cubs weren't willing to trade Felix. Marshall, Cedeno, and Marmol. If the Cubs trade Pie, wouldn't that suggest the Cubs think Harvey has a good chance of contributing in the majors? His arrival would coincide with the end of JJones' contract. If the Cubs trade Pie I'd see that more as a sign that Hendry needs to save his job by winning now. They might be feeling better about Harvey or possibly moving Fox to the OF full time or maybe even Negron. It's more likely that they will burn that bridge when they come to it.
  5. Anyone that is leery of trading for Wells should consider the very real possibility that Hendry could instead give roughly the same money to Pierre to not be anywhere near as good.
  6. There's always a chance, howver small, that Hendry will trade Izturis this offseason because he's been hurt seemingly ever since he arrived in Chicago.
  7. CubinNY, I'm wondering if you actaully read any of this beyond the core statement of beliefs. I admit I only skimmed the articles. Where does it say that they are racist? Where does it say that a woman shouldn't be president? I'm not really sure why you quoted this: The first part of that statement is true. Lincoln was an abolitionist but his first priority was preserving the Union. "If I could preserve the Union without freeing a single slave, I would do so. If I could save the union by freeing some slaves but not others I would do that as well"- Abraham Lincoln
  8. I think that puts all of their ML affiliates within 2.5 Hours of Baltimore.
  9. To be fair, hasn't MacPhail's draft strategy been more about acquiring lots of pitchers. The MacPhail has had some success developing pitchers. That being said, the last 12 years have been bitterly disappointing.
  10. If Pie was in the Cubs plans for next year, why didn't he get a Sept. call up?
  11. How many rookie middle infielders put up great numbers? I'd rather take a chance on Cedeno getting better both offensively and defensively than go with a "sure thing" like Izturis.
  12. Does Soriano still want to play 2nd base? It seems like he does and the main reason he'd sign with the Cubs would be so he could play 2nd base. Anyone worried about his defense at 2nd should consider what his defense in CF might look like. I'd argue that CF defense is more important than 2nd base defense.
  13. What Conservatives want in order of importance fiscal responsibility strong on national defense someone that can win end of list There might be a tiny section of the GOP that wouldn't embrace an African American female candidate. The same is also true for the DNC
  14. There's nothing 'sort of' about it. He came right out and said Murton should be the guy next year. And yet he won't start him everyday right now. I believe he's been playing Murton more than Jones the last few weeks-3-4 weeks maybe? I think you mean Pagan, not Jones. I think many people would argue that Dusty could play Pagan in CF if he really feels the need to see him play.
  15. Roberto Novoa: "Hi Greg, what's your secret to getting hitters out?" Greg Maddux: "I throw strikes." Roberto Novoa: "How do you do that?" Greg Maddux: "Just try to hit the spot where they can't get a good swing on it" Ryan Dempster: "Hey Roberto, I saw you talking to Mad Dog" Roberto Novoa: "Yeah, I was trying to get some pitching advice" Ryan Dempster: "Did he give you that crap about throwing strikes?" Roberto Novoa: "How'd you know?" Ryan Dempster: "That's what he tells everybody which is idiotic because if I could throw strikes consistently I wouldn't be asking him for advice."
  16. If Rocker wasn't lights-out, then your expectations for a lights-out closer are way too freaking high. And Smoltz was only a "solid closer?" He was a dominant closer. Didn't have anybody like Scot Shields? Greg McMichael's rookie year was better than any season Shields has had so far. Not only that, but he followed it up with a few other good seasons. Chris Hammond had an 0.95 ERA in 76 innings for the Braves in 2002. Remlinger had great years there. You saw everyone I listed earlier. They have routinely gotten great performances from their bullpen. It seems to me- and I admit that my memory is a little fuzzy as far as the Braves are concerned- but haven't the Braves almost always struggled to score runs in the post season. I seem to remember David Justice saying that the Braves valued nothing except starting pitching.
  17. If Kerry Wood pitches at all, I'd still want him in the rotation. I realize that he will start the year (whenever his year starts) in the pen but his real value is as a starter. I'll take Jeff Kent at 2nd base Izturis is gone and Cedeno starts at SS Pierre is allowed to leave. If Pie is ready he can start in CF. Murton stays in LF and leads off. lineup LF Murton 2nd Kent 1st Lee 3rd Ramirez RF Jones C Barrett CF Pie SS Cedeno P Starting Rotation Zambrano Prior- provided he's recovered, I haven't written him off yet Hill Dempster- he's as could as most of the other innings eater types that have been suggested Marshall/ Guzman/ Mateo/ Marmol Closer Wuertz Eyre Ohman Howry Aardsma whoever comes in 2nd in the 5th starter sweepstakes bench Soto Theriot Pagan Restovich Matt Stairs Bynum
  18. Well I don't look or feel 38. :D The need for offense goes back all the way to 2003. Even when the Cubs had good pitching they still were losing a lot of 1-0 games. Personally I believe Cedeno will be much improved next year both offensively and defensively. If the Cubs got Andruw Jones to play CF I'd have no problem with a MI of Theriot and Cedeno. Izturis, I have no use for him regardless of other moves.
  19. Now that was funny
  20. I'm 38 and therefore hardly a kid. MI defense is fine as long as you're getting better than average production from the rest of the starters. Barrett is better than avg offensively as are Lee and Ramirez. Murton will be good. Jones is a decent complementary player. CF, however, is a huge weakness. The Cubs can probably carry 2 defense first players and still win games. So if they upgrade CF they could carry Cedeno and Izturis and probably get away with it.
  21. It's hard to imagine how anything that happens between now and the merciful end of the season will make much of a difference either way. Success can be attributed to Sept. callups/ watered down talent/ not having a book on that guy.
  22. Maybe Dusty has always been sarcastic. That makes much more sense
  23. Wasn't Theriot a switch hitter when he was drafted by the Cubs? If so I'd like to see his numbers since he started hitting RH full time.
