  1. It seems to me that this is true but they will start him at Daytona with a quick promotion to AA if he has any kind of success. I'm wondering if Pawalek will get the midseason promotion to Daytona. That would get him back on schedule.
  2. It also means fewer walks which almost certainly works in the defense's favor.
  3. What sign do they use for "For God's sake please throw a strike"?
  4. Yeah, I think the only feasible answers there are "Lovie" or "cheap coach"... In that case, the only feasible answer is cheap coach as Lovie Smith will be just as expensive as Fisher or Cowher if the Bears have another good season. If the Bears don't have a good season than do they bring Smith back? Anyone surprised that Jessie Jackson hasn't found a way to get involved in all this?
  5. Somewhere Steve Stone is probably telling the story of how Tommy Herr adding 20 lbs of muscle put too much stress on his knees and landed him on the DL.
  6. I could see maybe not a straight platoon at 2nd but a lot of mix & match. Piniella seems like he likes to play the whole roster. Another important thing to consider is that the NL Central has more LH starters than perhaps any of the other divisions. So a L-R platoon isn't an 80-20 breakdown but perhaps more like a 65-35. Seems like that would make it easier to sell the idea of a platoon to the players involved.
  7. Most of the coaches I know have the kid take a called strike before they swing at a pitch but turn them loose after that. In that sense I agree that the rule won't really change the offensive strategy. I'm more concerned about leaving a kid in to use up the rest of his pitches. The problem with LL is that there is very little opportunity for instruction. The kids want to be good without having to practice. It's supposed to be fun but then you have the overly competitive types- coaches and players alike who quickly lose sight of that.
  8. That's much much much easier said than done. I'm glad they finally got around to making this change. It protects the arms of pitchers from coaches who have shown that they will put temporary success over the health/future of the kid. From what the coaches were telling me the pitch count was something like 85 for Major league (11-12?) which seems pretty high. I think this creates a danger that they may have a pitcher who has already thrown 60 pitches and they figure they might as well leave him in.
  9. The big one that will certainly get a lot of discussion is that pitchers will now be on a pitch count rather than a max innings per week. Who actually keeps track of the pitch count is up to individual leagues. If aplayer exceeds his pitch count the manager gets ejected. Should make for some interesting coaching decisions.
  10. Which makes me wonder if the Bears aren't being cheap for a reason, ie that Lovie Smith is a Marty Shottenheimer type that can turn around a bad program but can't take it to the next level. If the money was equal- and judging by what the Bears have offered and how far apart they claim to be it could be- I think Cowher would be the prototypical Bears headcoach, run orientated, hard nosed, etc. he looks like a Chicago guy. Jeff Fischer played for the bears. Perhaps he'd come back.
  11. Who will be the head coach after next season?
  12. At least Matthews has some power. That *might* allow him to sustain a little of the OBP improvement he showed last season.
  13. But is it more meaningless than the Holiday Inn Look Again Award? That debate might never end. Since the gold glove is equal parts reputation and popularity, it should be a rule that you can only vote for people that you've never seen play.
  14. That kind of move would provide insurance against Pie either flopping or needing to be platooned himself. On the other hand, maybe the Cubs think Chris Walker could provide that same line for much cheaper.
  15. Somehow I can't picture Lenin with a Mullet.
  16. I wish they'd give Kornheiser the 3-6 eastern slot so I could hear it. I liked his show because he never had interviews with professional athletes. Plus the Drive on XM 142 is pretty awful alot of the time.
  17. Clay Rapada would make more sense if they were talking about potential 2007 contributors. If that were the case why would they have Colvin so high?
  18. I could see Bonds breaking the record and then just not showing up the next game. Then he sends some toadie in to clean out his locker.
  19. "This is a place of love and welcoming and you should just get the hell out"
  20. If he makes the 25 man Casey McGahee is the emergency catcher. What are the odds against both catchers being out of the game and the emergency catcher is still available? I for one would love to see it but I've always rooted for that worst case scenario where Ray Guy has to play QB or Mike Krukow is putting on the shin guards.
  21. Yes. A claim that very few amatuers could (or would) claim.
  22. football is over + pitchers and catchers don't report for another week= 4 pages of Bobby Hill. I can't see Hill making the 25 man over McGahee or Moore. As mentioned earlier, I don't see where he fits in at Iowa either. He's not going to beat out Patterson at 2nd and one of Moore or McGahee will start at 3rd. My prediction is he asks for his release after ST if he doesn't make the team.
  23. Quote: What percentage of golfers have a zero handicap? I'd put that number at maybe 0.0001% Tiger Woods can go shoot a 5 under 67 but if someone else goes out and shoots a 66 there isn't anything he can do about it. To me that gives Federer an advantage he only has one opponent to beat while Tiger Woods- or any golfer- has to play against both the course and his peers.
  24. i would have trouble watching a basketball game even if i were paid to do so. it's right up there with soccer & hockey in my book. Before I went to college I would have agreed completely. 4 years at Illinois changed my opinion on NCAA basketball. I have a hard time watching more than 5 minutes of an NBA game. Hockey has to be seen in person. It's really easy to get hooked if you can go to games. Once you're hooked it's not as bad watching it on TV. Unless it's the world cup or our HS team, I can't watch soccer.
  25. Welcome to the forum! I've always been partial to catchers when it comes to managing. agreed. Nice balance of knowledge of the pitching game plan and an understanding of offense.
