  1. Lost in all this discussion is that fossil fuels are now so expensive that very soon alternative fuels will be cheaper and therefore viable.
  2. So basically, since the Cubs were completely terrible last year we should feel better about being merely bad so far this year.
  3. But we did know that DeRosa could and we knew Theriot could play 2nd. Ward is less than ideal in the OF but if someone got hurt they could always call up an OF if they didn't think Ward could handle it. The Floyd signing looked bad at the time because they already had Ward and there's really no reason to carry 2 different LH defensive liability OFs. It would have made much more sense to find another RH bat for the bench. Why not just keep Jones and when Pie was ready have him split time with Murton? I can't see how having Floyd split time with Murton is any better than having him split time with Jones.
  4. Because the local program manager likely made the decision to show BOS/NYY Probably not, but there is this wonderful thing called a chain of command, and it's sometimes more effective to start at the bottom; those at the top dont always get a chance to check their email... ..who crapped in your cornflakes? crapped in my cornflakes? good one And I repeat... Same person that made his "golden" grahams?
  5. I don't have insider but based on past history this is probably a story about how the Cubs will likely buy him out than bring him back at his relatively absurd option.
  6. One of the most compelling arguments for not signing Zambrano is using that money to pay ARod.
  7. I thought it was pretty obvious that the blood was fake when I first saw it. I would assume he'd be wearing a bandage after his ankle was stitched up, which means that the blood would have to seep all the way through the bandage after a popped stitch. I just don't see it. I was thinking the same thing. That would've been a lot of blood for it to soak through and make that large a spot. So what you're saying is that starting a playoff game on national TV was not enough attention for Schilling. After all, they almost never show the starting pitcher during a baseball game. So he comes up with this cunning plan, I'll draw attention to myself by making it look like my ankle is bleeding because, after all, during most telecasts, the camera does at least 500 close ups of the starting pitcher's ankle. If any of that is true credit, Schilling for being a genius. A hearty tip of the cap for exposing the absurdity of Fox's baseball coverage. I prefer to think that this is just sour grapes on the part of Yankee fans.
  8. I'm not sure who's a bigger idiot. Gary Thorne or the guy that wrote this story.
  9. Have you ever noticed how few trades actually happen in the offseason? Then when trades do happen they seem very one sided? That's because teams in the off season still have the chance to sign FAs to fill their holes. During the season they really don't have that luxury. The fact that Hendry didn't/ couldn't trade Jones in the off season has almost no bearing on whether he could trade him now. The bigger hold up now is whether Pie will hit enough to stick. Until they know that they have to keep Jones.
  10. I think it really comes down to 3 factors: 1. Does Zambrano re sign and for how much? If the Cubs decided to trade him at the deadline or he gets hurt and they don't have to pay his salary then there's little reason not to take the chance on Prior. Conversely, If Zambrano gets the big contract they may choose to save the 2.8 million for Prior. 2. The emergence of Angel Guzman etal. If Guzman shines and Marshall Gallagher, Marmol or Mateo show enough to get 5th starter consideration Prior is likely gone. 3. Are the Cubs, to use a poker term, "pot committed" on Prior? Having spent so much money on him so far, what's another couple million? Are they risking more by not bringing him back?
  11. Since they're already paying him to rehab this year, whatever they'd be paying him would be to pitch the 2nd half of next season. Maybe Prior can become the 1984 version of Rick Rueschel.
  12. Welcome to the forum. Is Davey Rosello really dead?
  13. I disagree. Dusty would have done it once but would have benched Theriot the next day because Izturis "Needs to hit his way out of his slump"
  14. If the Cubs were willing to pay Wade Miller 2 mil to rehab why would they balk at paying Prior 2.8 million?
  15. Rotator cuff is easier to come back from than labrum surgery because there is more bone to attach to and more to work with in the back of the shoulder as opposed to the labrum which is what hold together the whole front of the shoulder. It's often tough to get full range of motion back after labrum repair and that greatly affects velocity because that comes from external rotation of the shoulder which is what loss of range of motion affects. Sorry to get all medical, but that's generally what the problem is when guys come back with lost velocity. Don't be sorry. That's exactly the info I was looking for.
  16. So if it's a lambrum problem then he could come back? What about rotator cuff? I seem to remember reading that Wood didn't want to have shoulder surgery because the return rate was so low.
  17. I understand the desire to get Theriot and Derosa in the lineup at the same time but I still believe the fact that Soriano and RF du Jour aren't producing is a much bigger problem.
  18. And that black hole that is Cedeno/Izturis isn't? At least one can reasonably expect that the offensive production from the OF is going to pick up. The same can't be said for Izturis or Cedeno. Going into the year, realistically, we could expect little from any of the SS offensively. It's safe to say that though they are bad, their production isn't all that much lower than expected. Soriano, Jones and Floyd have all been disappointing. These are the players that we expected to produce that aren't. If these guys were hitting we wouldn't really care that Izturis and Cedeno weren't. The point is that while Theriot and Derosa are better than Theriot and Izturis or Cedeno the difference is not big enough to really make that much of a difference. The Cubs need their OF to hit.
  19. The fact that he played SS in college isn't very meaningful. Most MI that get drafted played there at some point. The question we should be asking is why did he get moved from SS? Probably because his range and his arm were not suited for the position long term. Theriot at SS is a band aid solution. Lack of production by the OF is what's really hurting the Cubs right now.
  20. I was trying to think of pitchers that came back from shoulder surgery and am drawing a blank.
  21. Does anyone really think that Fontenot is that much better than Izturis and or Cedeno? It sure doesn't seem like the Cubs do. They could have brought up Fontenot on many occasions and didn't. In fact they moved in the opposite direction by removing him from the 40 man roster. In order to promote him they'd have to drop someone else from the 40 man roster. Perhaps they are anticipating moving Prior to the 60 day DL. It seems to me that the best we could hope for is Fontenot replaces Cedeno on the 25 man roster and he splits time with Izturis. That to me seems more like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
  22. Z, Murton and Marshall for Cabrera actually makes some sense in that the Marlins could sell this to their fans as getting something for Cabrera. They could then flip Z for some younger cheaper talent at the trade deadline assuming Z returns to form.
  23. When are they going to get the San Diego Chicken for that pin up picture he uses to distract players?* *Is the San Diego Chicken still alive? I know he's just "the Chicken" now.
  24. If you want to prove that all star balloting is a joke what you need to do is nothing at all. The fans will, as they always do, vote in some terrible household name like Mike Piazza for AL catcher.
  25. Except Joe Morgan of course who said he had never seen four players hit homers in a row before. He doesn't watch any games he doesn't announce. I wonder if he owns a television How else would he watch replays of games he played in? fixed
