  1. I think it was mainly to make room for Pie. Reports that Floyd and Murton were also DL candidates suggest that the main purpose of the move was to bring Pie up. Someone had to go on the DL to make room for him and they decided on Ward. I think all three of them really are banged up, but none of them bad enough to really need to go on the DL. Of course, unless somebody (hopefully Jones) is traded by then, another decision will need to be made when Ward is eligible to come off the DL. This gives Hendry a 25 day window to trade Jones- 15 from the DL and 10 from the DFA.
  2. I see the inevitability of that even if I don't particularly like it. If the Cubs had a 2nd baseman or SS that could hit for power they could live with Murton in LH but since they can't count on Pie hitting for a lot of power - at least right away- they can't live with Pie and Murton in the same OF.
  3. In Hendry's world, hitting LH is a tool equal to hitting for power and way more important than OBP
  4. You had me at "Find a taker, any taker, for Jones" then you lost me by suggesting trading Murton for relief pitching.
  5. What does this have to do with Moises? I was thinking Carl Everett.
  6. Could this league compete with College football for talent? Perhaps this league could be a younger league where the guys that aren't student athletes could go play and earn a paycheck instead of pretending to get an education. That type of league could be a feeder system for the NFL and might therefore have a chance to succeed. It would be sort of like the CBA before they turned it over to the hands of Isaiah Thomas.
  7. Can't trade draft picks. If the Marlins want prospects there are many teams that can offer a better package than the Cubs can. They could always flip either or both of those guys later on. If they got Z and Ramirez they'd be able to try to get into the race. If they weren't back in by the deadline, they trade Zambrano for prospects. With Ramirez they can either trade him at the deadline or wait until the offseason. This trade would make their fan a lot happier.
  8. If I was a Yankee fan I'd demand that Arod be traded to the Cubs as a punishment.
  9. like i said, i appreciate aspects of both philosophys. While i understand the OPs approach used by moneyball enthusiasts in looking at talent, I dont think that everyone under 750 OPs should be sent to the minor leagues and that in certain positions (from the old school) defense is more important than offensive production. . Has it ever occured to you that maybe the reason teams go with defense over offense at C and SS is because its really hard to find C and SS that can hit? Can you think of a really good/ great team that didn't have either a good hitting SS or an offensive catcher? The Yankees of the late 90s had Jeter and Posada, the Big Red Machine had Johnny Bench, etc.
  10. How about we never trade for a veteran reliever again. Relievers historically have a short shelf life and very often their production drops very suddenly and mostly unexpectedly.
  11. Do you really think they're that close? I don't see where else they could get an influx of difference making talent. It's a lot to ask Patterson and Pie to step in and fill two holes. Even then they still need a new catcher and SS.
  12. Moving Barrett during this season solves nothing. Suppose he could somehow play 2nd base, who plays catcher and puts up numbers better than Theriot or DeRosa? Barrett is a FA and sees himself as a catcher. He'd be a pretty good fit for an AL team that could DH him on days that he doesn't catch.
  13. True. There's probably little value firing Jim now since the new owners will probably want to bring in their own people from the start anyway. It would be a great opportunity for someone to show what they could do. It would be sort of like an extended interview. I don't believe that the mess Hendry has made is as bad as it seems. Soriano's contract will be a millstone around the franchise's neck for some time but the Cubs can probably get out from Ramirez, Lee and what they would have had to pay Zambrano. Trade those guys for some young talent and reload. How about Zambrano and Ramirez for Cabrera? Could the Marlins turn that down? It gives them a chance to win now or they could flip one or both for someone else that they want. The Cubs get the best RH hitter in the NL without getting older and are no worse off financially.
  14. i've been trying to remember those terms. i kept thinking it was Dynacrat and something Dynacrat was the "just win sometime" party created by Jack Everett.
  15. The old Dynastic vs. Nowacrat debate. Sure brings back memories. Our best hope for a better MLB team is Tim Wilken and his ability to find talent beyond the first round. After the new owner fires Hendry there will be much less pressure to win right now on the new GM. The last time the Cubs had a GM that strip mined the farm system to save his job it took 5 years to recover. If things are as bad now as they were in '99, the Cubs should sell high on Lee, Zambrano and maybe Ramirez depending on what they can get in the other deals.
  16. Wasn't Puello really young when the Cubs signed him? I may be thinking of someone else.
  17. There's been a lot of talk the last few years about calling the strike zone by the letter of the rule book. In the 70s and 80s each umpire had his own strike zone and called it that way. For the sake of consistency within a single game, should the umpires be given more latitude to call their own strike zone if they call it consistently or do they need some sort of questec system at every park?
  18. Why has Patterson been playing the OF the last few games? Is Iowa shorthanded? Is this some kind of showcase ofr an upcoming trade? I can't see Patterson being an every day MLB OF. He certainly won't surplant Pie. With Fox being coverted to OF, Murton already on the MLB roster and Colvin behind him, long term it makes no sense playing Patterson in the OF.
  19. If I go in for surgery to have my appendix removed and the doctor amputates my leg, I will be critical of the doctor. That doesn't mean I think that I am a better surgeon or that surgery is easy. It just means that the person performed very badly at a difficult job and need to be held accountable.
  20. The Cubs will need to go 0-8 to reach 10 under. Luckily they are heading on the annual dreaded West Coast Bataan Death March road trip so they still have a chance. Then there's the Dempster to the rotation fiasco. Perhaps 0 for the rest of May is not out of the question. What really has me intrigued personally is whether the Princess Anne Cubs will score more runs in May than the Chicago Cubs. The Chicago Cubs play every day but the PA Cubs, in just 4 games have already scored 40 runs.
  21. The defensive drills video is awesome.
  22. No doubt his next organization will be all over that.
  23. He either needs to change his last name to Burquerque or just be known as Alburquerque.
  24. If Jones was traded they would immediately promote Pie and play him every day. Theriot or Soriano become the back up CF. Pagan returns to AAA or gets released/ DFA'd.
