  1. Sort of, but it's called WoW now. Isn't the internet great! They removed the one social component of playing D & D- sitting in someone's basement eating pizza and drinking beer.
  2. .293/.361/.436 for Renteria last year Well that definitely qalifies as better than Izturis but didn't he have a pretty forgetable 2005 or am I thinking of someone else?
  3. Is Reneteria good anymore?
  4. 1. If the Cubs did try to send Prior through waivers, how many teams would claim him? 2. It seems like a reliever will be traded soon. Who will it be and where? 3. Lou Piniella has said all the right things this offseason and ST. How long will the honeymoon last? The first question is complicated by the courtesy no claim unwritten rule. Since this is Prior I think this rule will be ignored by at least 15 teams I'd rather they trade Eyre than Ohman but those would be the leading candidates I'm guessing the end of April.
  5. I'm wondering if I should have included "Let me tell you about my D & D character". I had an employee who tried very hard to tell me about her Level 5 Magic user/ thief. Do people still play D & D?
  6. Is this the all Scooby Doo team?
  7. I wanted to put it into the words from Bull Durham but couldn't remember.
  8. Which of these topics that people feel compelled to talk about to you dread the most?
  9. I would never prefer Pagan to Patterson. Not ever.
  10. I can absolutely guarantee that it won't happen. Chief Illiniwek only appeared at halftime. No one that held the Chief in high regard would charge the court in a Chjief costume. Then there's also the part about Illinois actually winning which would be a pretty big upset considering Illinois has trouble scroing more than 50 points against teams that don't stink.
  11. It seems like d.ick pole should be on this list
  12. On the radio this mrning they were saying that this was the worst tournament ever. It seems to me that they were saying the same thing the last few years. Why do people have this feeling about the tournament? This occured to me earlier. The last couple tournaments have seen a lot more respect for mid majors while big conference at large teams are getting more double digit seedings (eg Illinois at 12). The net result of this is fewer upsets. Basically, by showing the deserved respect for mid majors they're watering down the lower seeds. Thus the perception that this is "The worst tournament ever".
  13. ON Fox Radio today they had an interview with Fay Vincent. According to the Dowd report Rose didn't bet on the Reds every night. Evidently he didn't like Soto and one of his other pitchers. Vincent said the reason he is saying that he bet on them every night is because people have been criticizeing him for only betting on his own team sometimes. I agree that putting Rose in the HOF won't make him go away but it could help. If Rose was in the hall he's no longer a story. So no one will seek that annual publicity grab.
  14. Nope. Novoa for Walker sounds like a better idea. The Padres would love to move Walker's contract. I wouldn't send them anything remotely useful. Novoa is useful. He's tall, he can reach stuff on the top shelf without even needing a ladder. Also, those lightbulbs in the clubhouse don't change themselves.
  15. gushed? did it take him 2 minutes to get the sentence out? No but it took him 4 minutes to say the exact same thing 10 different ways. "Talk about efforting" pause "Jim Hendry" pause "Efforting from the hospital" pause "Just got down from the meat wagon" pause "rather than tear into his jello and creamed turkey like most would Jim Hendry dials up a trade" pause "Who does that?" pause "His name is Jim Hendry" pause "What a great interview" pause "I'm great" pause "You clones out there are lazy unemployed losers"
  16. Unless those are some really good prospects, the Braves aren't letting Salty go. They are extremely high on him. I'd like to see Harry tackle that last name backwards. Even forwards would be high comedy. I'd just like to see what that looks like on the back of a jersey.
  17. Bill Madlock was my brother's favorite player- except for Larry Biittner.
  18. For those interested, the Cubs would have to wait 11 days in order to defer Pie's 1st year of FA. I doubt that figure's in the decision though. There's not enough room on the 25 for both Pie and Jones. As for the lineup, I'd like Pie to bat 7th with whomever is playing SS 8th. That will give him a little more protection than 8th with still not the pressure that goes with top or middle of the order. If he's successful, I could see him moving to 6th or 5th.
  19. The Office is on Thursday not Sunday
  20. Just wait until you hear about a player that ought to retire because he's so old and he's the same age or younger than you are.
  21. Let's suppose for a second that Guzman continues to impress. The Cubs trade Zambrano, Jones and Izturis for A-Rod. The money works out about the same. The yankees can then flip Jones in a deal for a 3rd baseman or they can move Cano to 3rd with Izturis playing 2nd.
  22. Most people view the Japanese League as AAAA. In a sense, Japanese players are like a guy that has torn up AAA 3 years in a row and is now making his debut. The problem is that never happens. Maybe it is unfair that they win the ROY. Then again who really cares.
  23. How can anyone named Slowey be an athlete? It just seems wrong somehow.
  24. I think Norm Charlton, Randy Myers, and Rob Dibble might disagree with you. Who was the manager of that Reds team that used this approach? That's right, it was some guy named Lou something. Closer by committee can work if the committee itself has the talent.
  25. I think a big part of the problem with traditionalists isn't so much that they're unwilling to use new stats so much as there are so many new stats with complicated formulae that they get intimidated. So as soon as they comes to grips with a new stat like OPS- which even feckless Boobs like John Kruk understand- it gets replaced by OPS+. The reason why people like Chass cling to batting avg and ERA is that they know they could do the math themselves if they had to. There is also, still value in observation. I don't need stats to tell me that Neifi Perez was bad at baseball or that Pujols is very good. Where stats are most useful are debunking the myth that a player like Juan Pierre is actually good. But even traditional stats sometimes do that. Pierre didn't have many RBIs and his BA was only .283ish that's horrible for someone that had 200+ hits.
