Ok, do we have any stat-masters around who could whip up some info on what changes (if any) #2 guys have had when they go to #1? I just don't think the chances of walker being a worse batter if moved to hitting 1 are significant

I want Walker in the 2 hole. Join the Florida Everything Must Go Fire Sale, get Pierre, and then sell what you have to so you can bring in a real right fielder. Dunn/Abreu/Manny, my order of preference. If it takes Corey for Manny straight up, us taking on his contract, I do it (though i hope if you throw, say, Hill into it, they'll eat a bunch of cash). We can afford that payroll next year.

Pierre

Walker

Lee

Ramirez

Ramirez

Murton

Barrett

Cedeno

I'll take it

Last night BK and Diffusion did some figuring in this thread

See Bob's Keeper post about 1/2 down.

Boy that was a fun thread.

Not what I'm looking for. Last week I asked what happened to hitters when they went to the 8-spot (in the NL), and bob answered that they lost slg and added obp. I'm asking the same thing this time, except from 2 to 1 specifically.

Now, if he had, say, split pierre's PA's into his 1 and 2 spot numbers, that would be something

OK. Someone with more access to data then I will have to answer that question.

However, in the NL last year the "lead off" batter only lead off 41% of the time. I'd say those results suggest to not get too caught up in the need for a leadoff batter and just get a guy who has good OBP at the top of the order. But that's just me.

I'd like to see him hit leadoff a couple hundred games before I advocate putting him there.

He got on base at a .370 clip in the leadoff spot in 04. I don't see why his numbers would drop if he bats in the leadoff spot. A couple hundred games? Why?

If it takes a couple hundred games of leading off before you trust someone enough to let them lead off, how exactly do they earn your trust? Are you basically saying that a hitter MUST prove himself outside of your organization before he can be annointed a leadoff hitter?

Well you're in luck, since Walker's been a leadoff man more than any other spot in his career. 285 games to be exact, with better offensive production than say, Rafael Furcal.

Grady Sizemore: 138 ML ABs in 2004 before leading off in 2005

Matt Murton: 140 ML ABs in 2005

Mr. Murton has better plate discipline than Sizemore and had more base stealing success in the minors. Sizemore really came out of nowhere last year w/ the SBs.

Todd Walker:

           G AB
Batting 1st 285 1169 .291 .349 .443 .792

Batting 2nd 229 944 .306 .356 .480 .836

Juan Pierre:

           G AB
Batting 1st 740 3150 .304 .354 .375 .729

Batting 2nd 40 147 .293 .346 .340 .686

Pretty good argument for keeping Walker. He doesn't have the speed, though, to convince Hendry and Dusty to keep him there, it appears.

And since both Pierre and Walker are not really good defensive players it makes me want Walker to stay even more unless Hendry can deal for Pierre using little of the prospect resources and moves Walker and gets some bang for the buck. Wishful thinking indeed.

It's frustrating me to no ends that Cubs can't recognize that the most cost-effective lead off hitter on the market is already on their roster: Todd Walker.

He doesn't have the speed to lead off.

Agreed.

You....know he was being sarcastic, right?

Posted
This is why i dont see a match with pierre. Hendry is obsessed with defence at the moment how does Jp fall in to that category.?

come on. The dude can catch the ball. He might not be able to throw it, but he sure can catch it. Plus he's fast. Speed is everything.

No, I guess not.

man, if i were the mets, cardinals, or any other team in the market for a 2b, i'd be salivating at the chance to dupe hendry out of walker. good pop, pretty good obp, cheap contract. just start out the talks w/ 'well, walker doesn't play very good d, but i suppose i'd take him off your hands.'
