You mean the same agonz we signed to 2-12 6 years of inflation before furcal's next contract?

Not to be lazy, but has there been anymore verification to there being a done deal other than the LA Times?

The Associated Press, citing a person familiar with the negotiations said late Saturday night, also reported that Furcal and the Dodgers were on the verge of completing a deal.

Well, "sources close to the negotiations" have confirmed it. :P There will probably be official word today at noon CT or possibly tomorrow..

Wow this wasn't predictable. I get tired, as a Cub fan of getting kicked in the teeth...I'm convinced that 2003 was just something to intensify the pain. It's not that I was overly excited about Furcal, though I would have loved to have seen his arm and range at SS. It's that as usual (for the last 2 years) we put all of our eggs in one basket and get outbid by some lunatic. Don't get me wrong, I would have been more upset if Hendry got into a bidding war and ended up somewhere in the 14s...but now what?

To me...the offseason will be at least a partial faliure if we don't end up tradeing for dunn, abreu, or manny, AND pick up Bradley (and Lowe) from LA. I'd never think about Furcal again if we ended up with:

Walker - 2B

Bradley - CF

Abreu/Dunn/Ramirez - RF

Lee - 1B

Ramirez - 3B

Barrett - C

Murton - LF

Cedeno - SS

My fear is that Hendry won't let that happen.

A) Walker isn't a prototypical leadoff hitter nor is he known for "catching the ball".

B) I don't believe Hendry appreciates OBP or OPS enough to see how much of a monster that Dunn really is and will probably continue to feel that even giving up Hill for Dunn is too much.

C) I'm not sure we have the trading chips to pull in Abreu/Ramirez

D) I can see Hendry letting his pride get in the way of his brain and call off any potential deals with Coletti. IMO the best thing he could do would be fleece him in a trade and leave him with that huge Furcal contract and nothing to show for it.

E) This is still Dusty's team and if Cedeno and Murton aren't lights out from Spring Training on, I can see Neifi and Mabry getting the starting jobs by May if not sooner.

Here is my prediction for the lineup next year:

Pierre - CF (We give up Hill, Marmol, Dopriak)

Perez - SS

Lee - 1B

Wilson - RF (Walker, Williams)

Ramirez - 3B (Macias/Cedeno by June...I don't think we're done with ARam's leg problems)

Hairston - 2B

Murton/Mabry - LF (straight platoon)

Barrett - C

I'm so disgusted with next season I can't stand it and the winter meetings haven't even started yet. I've been a Hendry supporter for a while now but I'm quickly changing my tune. I really just don't thing he gets it.

Can you imagine JH negotiating with DLee's agent for an extension if he had paid Furcal $13 million per year? The numbers would have to start at $20 million per year.

Not really. I think Hendry could just point to Pujols' contract. Nobody is going to be making 20 million per for quite awhile, IMO.

ARod is a product of a different era, as are Jeter and Manny. Lee couldn't ask for more than Pujols, sonsidering Pujols has been posting his numbers for four years now. Furcal's contract is an aberration, considering how he is making more than Tejada now.

Lets give ol' Rafeal the benefit of the doubt, and say he's going to put up career high numbers next year.

Lets say .295/.360/.450/.810

At $13 million per, that is $16,049 per POINT of OPS...

Heh, he'll look good at short though midseason when the Dodgers are tanking, and we trade for him and make them eat half his yearly salary...

Yes, the difference is 10M. Do you think that when Furcal hits the FA market again (assuming he doesn't re-up with the Dodgers) that he won't command at least 10.5M/2 years? he's going to have no problem making 50M over 5 years after taking 39.5M/3 from the Dodgers.

My friend's boss's fifth cousin twice removed's stepfather's half brother's mother's hairstylist's mailman's parole officer claims there's more to the Furcal story. Apparently the Dodgers are going to hire Dusty Baker as manager, paying a substantial portion of Lowe's salary in a potential Lowe and Bradley to the Cubs trade as compensation for hiring Dusty.

OK, enough wishful thinking. Back to reality.

Maybe maybe not. how do you know he won't get hurt? We didn't sign AGonz did we? I thought we just inherited that contract in the trade.

I really doubt Furcal develops serious injury concerns over the next 3 seasons. Is it a risk? Of course, but it's a small one for a lot of money.

If he has one leg amputated, one of these crazy, out of control GMs will still offer him $8 million per year.

I hear they're handing out free money in LA.
