A source in the Red Sox organization mentions that the Cubs have interest in 31 year-old right fielder Trot Nixon. Nixon hasn't had 500 at-bats since 2002, but he's hit well when healthy. Nixon mashes right-handers but struggles mightily with southpaws. The Red Sox are rumored to have interest in Corey Patterson.

This is from mlbtraderumors.com so probly wont happen, but I would like this deal. Nixon can be a good left handed bat with high OBP and a good fielder.

Nixon is Plan Z

Surely we can do better than him.

I'd take him ahead of Jacque Jones or other similar RFers. I'd put Kearns higher on my list than him. Not too crazy about this proposal. On second thought, does Boston have any more Matt-Murton-type prospects they might throw in on that deal?

Patterson might need a change of scenery, but I dont think Boston is a better fit. They'll be on him just as hard as Cubs fans were. Also if they were to trade for Corey, who do they put in RF?

Is Bill James still one of Boston's top advisors, or did he leave with Theo. Because if he has any influence on the deal, I can't see Boston wanting anything to do with CPatt.

Trot would be a nice addition - he put up a .275/.357/.446 line last year, and his career numbers are slightly better than that.

He made 7.5 million last year... what's the rest of his contract look like?

It's listed as $6.5 million "plus escalators/incentives." It's the same as his 2005 salary, so I'd guess that he'll be making at least $7.5 million next year, as well.

Wow, I saw this thread and I immediately thought Otis Nixon. Don't know why. At least it makes me happy to know we aren't signing Otis.

What's wrong with Nixon? If a .366 OBP and .855 OPS aren't quality enough, you're shooting way too high.

Nixon is a solid option for RF.

I'd rather have Otis Nixon. Can we get Ron Gant too?

Because I was hoping for a guy with a more powerful bat.

I can so see Carry Muskat using that as a headline during one of Zambrano's starts in, like, July:

Cubs turn to plan Z to keep slim playoff hopes alive

That's exactly what I was thinking. After all these years of reading Bill "Sports Guy" Simmons gush about Nixon, I thought he was pretty good. I'd definitely live with him in right batting 5th or 6th.

It's pretty sad when NSBB posters can come up with more creative headlines than Muskat.

I like Nixon because he carries his hat in his back pocket while he bats.

I like him b/c his first name is Trot.

Agreed. He sounds like an adult film star.

If only he had Kent's porn-stache...
