someone asked how I knew the family, cousin is a rep for one of my stores. Mabry is a good guy who has autographed stuff for us before.

What would I gain from posting a crappy rumor here??

Wanna bet Levine read it here first, great site guys

I just heard this deal reported by Bruce Levine on ESPN1000 fwiw.

I did too. They also said that Hendry had dinner with Furcal and his wife and made an offer to his agent. Who knows if it is true....

Alright, that settles it. We don't have Mabry.

Usually Levine is a little better than say, Gammons...

He's been pretty good about news this offseason with the Todd Walker, Scott Eyre, and Glendon Rusch news. Only thing he's been wrong about is Pierre, but it's quite possible a trade was in place then one side backed out without warning making him look like a doof.

Thanks buddy. Or should I say bubby? :D

As for crappy rumor, we've been had before, so you never know.

I think Mike Restovich, who was just released by Pittsburgh, would have been a great pickup for the Cubs. I'd rather have him than Mabry anyway and likely for half the price, but I'm not going to complain too much over a 4th outfielder.

It just seems to me that Hendry is always a day late and pays too much for past production. Who was the last Cub off the bench that was an effective sub/pinch hitter?

Randel "I never saw a pitch I didn't like" Simon.

Man I loved him. He would swing at anything...and make contact.

He was a guy Hendry traded for and he was a decent pinch hitter. I wish Hendry could figure out how to get a quality bench guy via the free agent route.

Todd Hollandsworth was a pretty decent FA bench pickup IMO. At least before Dusty decided he was starter material.

That's why it's so hard for Hendry to find a good pinch hitter via free agency ](*,)

Restovich has absolutely brutal splits, which is why he can never stick with a ball club. It's very important for a pinch hitter and role player to have comparable splits, because they come to bat late in the game when either a lefty or righty could easily be replaced with the other. If your PH is an auto out against a RHP, for example, you needlessly burn a bench bat because of the switch. Which the Cubs can NOT afford to do, since they will likely go with a 12-man staff again this year. The bench is one man short to begin with, you can't further hamstring yourself with one of the bench guys unable to hit half the pitchers he'd face.

I have mixed opinions of JH, but he's slowly improving the team. Whether or not he could have saved millions negotiating better, I cannot fault him for his offseason acquisitions so far. Our bullpen will be a team strength, Mabry has a role on a winning team, and it's a given that JH will acquire a premier SS or RF.

There's a lot of offseason yet, and I like JH's approach so far, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he will find all the pieces.*

* I retain the right to whine if he doesn't. :)

You're right. I knew he was decent against lefties and just assumed he was at least okay against righties. I should have looked it up before I posted...

John Mabry - OF - Cardinals

John Mabry has decided to accept a one-year deal from the Cubs, his agent confirmed Monday.

Mabry chose the Cubs after the Cardinals failed to offer him a guaranteed contract. Mabry is coming off a .240/.295/.407 season, but if this helps ends Jose Macias' Cubs career, it can't be too bad of a signing. Nov. 29 - 1:37 am et

May be the best thing I have seen written in awhile. I am all for Macias not being a Cub:D

This is what kind of signing/recruiting Baker is good for....vets past their prime. They know they'll get a shot at starting and at the very least a lot more playing time then they deserve.

I'm really hoping Murton showed enough to Dusty in his 150 AB's to warranty a much longer leash than previous rookie position players.

I hope so too USS.... I really do. Remember that Murton was new and the pitchers haven't had a chance to figure him out yet like they will in 2006. It is the word according to Dusty.

Porkchop was the man. And based on that sausage incident in Milw., he really could hit anything.

And prove he would swing at anything!

Maybe we can coax Glenallen Hill out of retirement.

Damn, but I miss him.
