Jason Michaels has to be available.

For as good as his OBP is, you really have to wonder why he has never gotten more than 343 PA's in a year.

I don't follow the Sox minor leagues, but Haigwood and Gio are said to be top left-handers in their organization. I don't doubt that to be true since it seems Kenny Williams has a philosophy of trading the unproven for the proven.

He traded Jeremy Reed and Miguel Olivo two years ago for Freddy Garcia. That was a risk that Williams won, but at the time, he was heavily criticized for it. Reed was the best non-pitching prospect in the Sox organization at the time of the trade, and an improving Olivo was hitting like .270 at the bottom of the order with maybe the best catching arm in the game. Fortunately for Williams, Reed and Olivo have regressed substantially and Freddy G was a necessary cog in the Sox winning the World Series.

Today, Williams trades another two top prospects, though unproven at the MLB level, for a proven but aging Jim Thome.

It looks like Williams greatly values proven, MLB All-Star talent, and has little value for top MLB prospects. It's worked for him so far, but he's bound to get burned eventually.

I don't think that's necessarily true.

You need to have a balance of veterans acquired through acquisitions and homegrown talent. Crede, Rowand, Garland, McCarthy (to an extent), Konerko, Jenks, and Ozuna were all people brought up through the Sox farm system in one way or another (I could be wrong about Konerko). A bunch of others were critical FA/Trades.

I haven't seen a lot of youth that the Sox have traded away (under Williams) that has haunted them.

What the hell is Gillick doing? Supposedly telling the Yanks that Michaels is off the table and then acq'g Rowand.

I have no idea, with Burrell, Abreu, Michaels, Victorino, and Rowand. All 5 won't be on the roster by ST.

Maybe Michaels is only off the table for that nothing-worth-trading organization.

You keep holding out hope for Michaels.

I admire your persistence.

Who cares who they give up. They just won the WS. Their fans could care less what prospects are moving as long as the team is improved.

I think we can change the title of this thread to "confirmed". Levine says its done.

And Levine says both the Sox and Cubs will be in the hunt for Pierre.

Great! So the Cubs won't get into a bidding War for Giles but will for Pierre?

Unconcievable! (no reference to the Princes Bride intended)

Grreeaat Movie.....but it's inconceivable.....and i before e except after c......and I'm being anal.....um.....Go Cubbies!!

But does Hendry care?

Nope, not when he already have a similar player in Matt Murton already on the roster.

8 Matt Murton's may be the best lineup the Cubs have had in recent memory.

Kenny Williams > Jim Hendry.

After the 2005 season, sure. But after the 2003 season the sentiment was Hendry > Williams. I know Hendry has had a rough 2 yrs, but I rather him be the GM then Kenny Williams, who is a moron, who happen to find the ultimate "lightning in the bottle" experiment.

Care to elaborate? I know many think he's an idiot because of the "small ball" garbage. But wasn't this a move that went against all people thought he was about. I still think it was good, considering there were rumors of Rowand for Pierre. And if Pierre and Podsednik would have been in the same lineup/outfield, I would've been tempted to become a Brewers fan.

Even after the Thome deal, there are rumors about Pierre coming to the Sox.

If Pierre and Podsednik are in the same OF, then every player on every team in the league will run on balls hit to CF and LF. They have two of the three worst arms in baseball.

With Pierre and Podsednik in the same OF, I think you only need 2 OF. Maybe they aren't the best at getting jumps, but they are fast. Just play the deep right center and deep left center and have a permanent cut off guy in shallow center. :D

I think people jokingly toyed with this idea after the '03 season with a Pie Patterson OF.
