It was reported on both the prosportsdaily and espn message board at around the same time that Gammons had said on ESPN Radio that the Cubs signed Bob Howry at 12 million. He said "Middle relievers are in high demand....Eyre got 11 million from the cubs, Bobby Howry got 12 million from the cubs.." according to the espn board. Nothing on the web from what I'm looking at. I'll kepp looking. Did anyone else hear? Edited by Rondon Fan

If true, this reminds me of Lewis Black's bit about the end of the universe.

"You're standing there, looking at a Starbucks, and you think, 'There can't possibly be another Starbucks behind me. No one could be that stupid.'"

If we give 11 million to Eyre and 12 million to Howry, Hendry should be shot without trial.

Ok, not literally, but it would not be a good move.

well we can blame Hendry for Howry's price tag being so high. Eyre was the first RP signed so you knew the price was going to go up for all of the rest of the middle relievers.

Again, if you didn't hear it or read yourself -- this time Gammons reporting it on ESPN radio -- please do not post it in the thread title.

I "half-heard" the ESPN report, and asked the same question in the "Torre wanted Eyre" thread. I don't think it was reported that he already signed, though.

Guess this would mean Hendry will target BJ Ryan and still have some money left over to pursue another middle reliever or two. Smart plan.:^o

Gammons: "Scott Eyre's already gotten 11 million dollars from the Cubs. Bobby Howry's getting 12 million dollars from the Cubs."

Audio is available at espn.com.

Maybe he misspoke? If we sign Howry, then you have to figure Hendry is gonna make some trades involving our bullpen arms right?

Unless they go with a 8-10 man bullpen this year.

Can Howry catch the ball?

 The Dead Horse called and he wants you to stop beating him!

Don't you all think there'd be some other confirmation of this thing if its true?

Just listedned to some Gammons audio re the Marlins: Pierre "likely" to go, "may be the Cubs, I don't know."

BJ Ryan likely to go the Phils or Mets depending on what Wagner does.

"Bobby Howry's getting 12 million from the Cubs."

Could this mean he's getting offered that much?

hmmm, it's not all that clear..."Bobby Howry's getting 12 million dollars from the Cubs"...thrown in as an afterthought-type statement.

Exactly (see my post above). It didn't sound like he was breaking any news there; it sounds like he made an off-the-cuff remark that he should have clarified.

ESPN 1000 didn't have anything on their latest sportscenter update. Maybe Gammons just meant that's what the Cubs have offered?

Would you be so kind as to provide a link to the audio?

it's in the beckett trade audio clip (main ESPN page, upper right corner). he just kind of throws it out there at the end like he wasn't really breaking a story.

Again, that's what I think he meant.

There's a blurb in Jayson Stark's most recent column that claims the same thing, although not as definitively.

The hottest free agent no one has talked about much this winter is reliever Bobby Howry, whose rocketing price tag already appears to have priced him out of a return to Cleveland.

Howry had a sensational season (only 49 hits allowed in 73 innings) -- and an even more sensational second half (0.99 ERA, .146 opponent average after the break). So he's being marketed as a young Tom Gordon -- a guy who will command closer's money but still could be a set-up man on the right team.

One club extremely interested is the Phillies -- whether they sign Billy Wagner or not. One of Wagner's conditions for signing anywhere is having impactful set-up men around him. And Howry is the best set-up arm on the market.

However, the Cubs now appear to have the inside track, at a possible $12 million for three years.

That settles that, apparently.
