This is a big market team, have you ever seen the $ the yankees spend on (worse) relievers?

Get over yourselves. At least he didn't give away any of your precious minor league gold.

I can't even imagine the reaction if he traded away some awesome minor league talent like Bobby Hill, or Hee Seop Choi, or any of the trash in waiting we have 'stocked' in the minors.

Mocking people is a good way to get a 1 way ticket out of here. Please stop.

Ah, the things some regular posters can get away with...

I think this one is getting put into my collection.

The funny part about all of this is that I legitimately agree with almost everything that has been said.

This signing is too long, and for too much money. Not necessarily because of Eyre, but because of the nature of all relievers (outside of the upper echelon ones, I wonder what those are like?).

Sarcastic pointed out this point beautifully. First time I saw it mentioned.

Also, like it has been pointed out, the offseason barely started.

There's a lot of work still to be done to bury Neifi on the bench.

Spending a large amount of money on relief pitchers (good but not great ones) is often not a good use of money. They're just so unpredictable. Eyre has had good years and bad years. Obviously, we'll have to hope his years with the Cubs are good ones.

If not, no problem, we can always trade him back to SF.

So why were you so upset that a lot of us didn't like this signing?

Overheard at Rafael Furcal's home in the Domincan Republic:

"They signed WHO? For HOW MUCH? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"

"Hello, Kinz? Get me the best deal you can from Schuerholz. I don't want any part of that circus."

More like

"OMG HE PAID HOW MUCH FOR EYRE???? AND THEY WANT ME TOO??? IM RICH BEOTCH!!!"

Seanez only made half a million last year. Granted, a small market team.....er well, a team that pretends to be small market, but it's more than a 3m difference.

Where does this leave Ohman, who did a commendable job last year? Do we need 2 LOOGY's? Or is Eyre Dempster's setup guy? I don't get it.

Maybe Ohman is now possible trade bait.

Also, I'm not going to judge this signing until I see how Eyre does in a Cubs uniform. I guess all the "Mr. know it Alls" here know what the market is regarding LOOGY's as FA's. NOT!!!!

Give it a chance all you pessimists & overreacter's!

Maybe the optmists should give it a rest. Almost 4 mil for a loogy. Yeah!

Too bad he didn't stick with Bartosh as the second lefty so when he blew another game you could rip Hendry for not upgrading the bullpen in the offseason.

I wasn't mocking anyone, I was replying with a differing view from the pervasive sense of anger/doom enveloping this thread.

Not once did I call out a single person/plant/animal/post.

The Choi/Hill stuff was toeing the line. If we are done with this, let's get back to talking baseball.

It wasn't so much that I was upset about not liking the deal.

It's not enjoyable to read page after page of the same stuff, new ideas? New reasons it wasn't good?

Like I said previously, Sarcastic brought up a 'new' point about the unreliability of relievers - after 5 pages someone finally spoke up with this?

The fact that my sarcastic post yielding this many "shame on yous" from this community is baffling.

BAFFLE'D!!!

Try calling Hendry [expletive] and Neifi Dusty's boy toy and you will be applauded and welcomed with open arms.

I don't speak for him, but I'm kind of upset at the tone some people have been taking here. Without criticism this place would be boring and pointless, but I think things have really gotten a lot nastier here over the last few months.

My problem with this signing is that it is Scott Eyre who has had a few good years and one great year. I'd rather he spend the money on a more consistant reliever, who might not have had a year like Eyre did. To me it's similar to Hendry's rationale for signing Burnitz, completely overlooking where Burnitz played and how he had played every other year.

I'm not sure what type of reaction you expect when you make a statement like "get over yourselves", followed up by some wise-ass insults.

Yes, the good parts of this signing:

No prospects lost (even though we need to clear some now)

Ohman needs a friend in the pen.

It will be nice when Rusch is shuffled (back?) into the 'pen, he's not called upon to be a LOOGY - which he cleary is not good at/comfortable with.

The Cubs need bullpen help, Veteran bullpen help. There's that dirty word, veteran. The bullpen sucked last year, it was full of mostly young guys. I'm not against having young guys in the pen, but not all of them. Novoa was very inconsistent, same with Wuertz towards the latter part of the year. I love my boy Todd Wellemeyer, but he's unpredictable as well. Ohman did a pretty good job.

Assemble a pen with a mix of youth and veterans. If Williamson bounces back, Dempster continues his good work this could be a pretty good bullpen. With the starting staff like the Cubs have (lots of strikeouts, lots of pitches), they will be used often.

Eyre will help this club in an rea where they need help. Its no secret the Cubs were looking for veteran bullpen help. You can argue the length and terms of the contract, but he will help. Thats all I'm concerned about now.

But what relievers did you want instead of Eyre?

I haven't seen a list.

And I do realize Wagner and BJ Ryan are out there - and as much as I'd like to believe we could get them for $3.5 a year, I don't think that's going to happen.

I'm not trying to take on anybody - I legitimately can't think of a better Left RP out there on the market that'd be better.

The thing I dont understand about this signing is what does it do to Ohman and Rusch? Does this mean Rusch is definatly starting? Does it mean Ohman is trade bait? There is no way in hell we go in(or should) to next season with 3 lefties in the bullpen. To me Ohman is pretty much the exact same thing as Eyre but hes cheaper and younger, so whats the point?

Makes you wonder what in the heck is Rusch and his 3mil going to do now that Eyre has been signed...

Mine (or any other mod) was the only one you need to worry about. Done.

Good point brought up by Sarcastic. I do worry about going after relievers. What teams had the best relief corps last year? A guy who is great one year, can stink it up the next.

Scott Hammond was insane in his only year in Atlanta (coincidence?). He hasn't come close to that level since. Nor was he anything special prior to that.

Even the Yankees only gave Hammond 2.2m after a season of 0.95 ERA with Atlanta. And the Yankees only gave him 2 years. Think about that.
