The Braves and Cubs are among the teams that reportedly have contacted free agent Alex Gonzalez.

The Marlins have yet to show any interest in keeping Gonzalez and probably won't unless he's willing to accept a one-year deal. Nov. 15 - 1:49 am et

I can't see any reason why we would. If we sign Furcal and have Neifi as a backup its not like we need a defensive SS for late game situations.

Unless Hendry thinks he can be a late inning HR threat(remember all those game winners he had for us?) I don't think thats a smart move, but it may be what Hendry is thinking.

EDIT-----

OOPS- Wrong Alex Gonzalez, Nevermind.

Looking at his stats, I wouldn't say the Marlin's Gonzalez is any better. He has a lifetime line of 245/292/391. He can't even get an OBP of .300 consistently.

That said, I kind of doubt that this is who Hendry ends up signing.

Probably just a precaution in case Furcal doesnt sign and Nomar stiffs the Cubs. A terrible terrible option that would end up costing Hendry his job. At least he hit a GW WS HR once...

#-o Please no Hendry.

I can think of two possible reasons why this report was written, assuming it is accurate.

One, Hendry is attempting to let Furcal's agent think that the Cubs are exploring other options at SS because Hendry feels/knows that the Cubs current offer is the best one Furcal has on the table. It is Hendry's way of saying take it or leave it, we aren't raising our offer without actually saying that.

Or two, Hendry is a complete and utter idiot.

I'll let you decide which one sounds more plausible.

Leverage? If I'm Furcal I laugh at that.

I think Hendry is intent on filling a team with 14 middle infielders and 11 starting pitchers.

How can you say that when you know that Dusty likes a 12-man pitching staff? :D

Hmm,

I think I can see where Hendry might be going with this.

Trade two cheap talents (Walker and Cedeno) and replace them with defensive minded players, (Neifi and Alex NO S Gonzalez). THEEEEN, bat them 1 and 2. Because Gonzalez is better than Macias, who Hendry will resign anyway, due to the naked pictures. Next we can get Juan Encarnacion for RF, and try this Patterson kid again in CF.

A lineup of:

Neifi!

Alex

Lee

ARAM

Barrett

Juan

Corey

Murton

This Rumor cannot be true. Please god no.

Rotoworld bases their rumors more on "who is a FA at what position, and what teams are pursuing someone to fill that position" than anything factual. Rotoworlds rumor mill is one of the worst ones out there. No way on earth Hendry goes after Gonzales with Cedeno already on the team.

I've never found them to be too useful for rumors, either way.

In this case, sounds like Florida is trying to create interest in Gonzalez, maybe to get a pick out of him, I don't know. I certainly doubt that there's been any interest on our part. It's just inconceivable that we're interested in him at all. Even as a backup, we don't need him, as we already have two SS capable guys. If we get Furcal, that would be three.

edit: unless there's a trade in the works involving Cedeno, and Hendry wants another backup. I doubt Gonzalez would sign on as a third string SS though.
