Do you believe a Furcal decision will really start the ball rolling for this Cubs offseason? Moreover, I believe a Furcal signing is a key to keeping Perez out of the Cub 2006 lineup.

Some believe that if Furcal isn't signed, Perez, and not Cedeno will start at SS. But if that's true, then even if Furcal is signed, and Walker is moved as expected, then you'd have to assume Perez will get more time at 2nd than Cedeno.

Of course, after posting, I thought of that, with Furcal at SS, it'll be too easy for Dusty, I can hear it now..."2b is not Cedeno' natural position". Perhaps, a signing of Furcal and retaining Walker keeps the lineup Nefi-free.

Signing neifi, having cedeno, and going after furcal means you don't want walker. you're not going to keep all 4 unless you can't get anything for walker (or you surprise everyone and trade cedeno).

UPDATE:

Nothing exciting, just heard that Hendry was discussing dollar figures with Furcal's agent today. That is all that was said (as reported on the SCORE, so take it for what it is worth)

That's actually pretty siginificant. Word was that Hendry wasn't going to discuss dollars until he knew Furcal was comfortable leaving Atlanta. Kinzer was to sit down today with Furcal and discuss his comfotability with each team, mainly Cubs and Braves. This likely means Furcal has said if the Cubs are the higher dollar, I'm willing to go to Chicago. This is all inference, but I think it's a correct one.

If the Cubs are only battling with Atlanta, I'd like to see the Cubs call Atlanta's bluff. I don't think Atlanta would really pay him 8m for the next 4 years. If the Braves DID give him that, then Hendry can start working on Lugo and Giles. Assuming of course that Hendry had already locked down the Pierre trade.

4/32m is the absolute most I'd offer him. Maybe throw in an option year with a team buyout.

I'd go far close to 4 years 40 million assuming some of that money is tied up in incentives. Maybe 4 years 36m with another 4 million in incentives tied up.

Agent talk or has it already gotten to this???

So how much money will it take to land Furcal?

Last winter, shortstop Edgar Renteria signed a four-year, $40 million deal with the Red Sox, setting the early line for Furcal's negotiations this winter.

"We're past that," said Kinzer, who is said to be in the five-year, $50 million neighborhood with Furcal -- and, very possibly, beyond that. "He wants to make the most that he can. But, also, if you aren't happy with where you are playing ... that means a lot to him. He wants to be in a situation where he can win."

Has Furcal seen the Cubs playoff history? I suggest he sign that $50m (or more) contract in Atlanta.

There is just absolutely no way I would play that game with Furcal's agent.

Man, Hendry is going to blow his load going after Furcal and have nothing left for RF/CF. Not to mention millions wasted on Neifi and Rusch.

I hope I'm wrong.

Given that he's probably not really trying to sign giles, he doesn't need a ton of leftover cash, mostly just trade-goods.

Unless he goes for abreu, I guess.

From Rotoworld:

Chipper Jones has reportedly agreed to restructure his deal in order to free up money for the Braves.

Jones' agent, B.B. Abbott, said the new contract would reduce his 2006 salary from $17 million to $11 million and turn a pair of $15 million vesting-option years in 2007 and 2008 into guaranteed years at $11 million per season. It also includes a $4 million signing bonus due in January, and adds a vesting option for 2009 worth between $8 million and $11 million. Under the previous deal, his options would have vested with just 450 plate appearances per year. This could save the Braves as much as $15 million over the next three years, giving the team additional money to re-sign Rafael Furcal or pursue Trevor Hoffman.

Do you think the Cubs could get Neifi to restructure his contract, so that the Cubs could sign AGone from the Marlins?

Looks like we might know where Furcal will land in maybe the next 2 weeks.

http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-cub18.html

Furcal, 27, who is expected to command a multiyear deal worth as much as $50 million, hasn't received formal proposals yet from the Cubs or other teams, but his contract parameters are clear, said agent Paul Kinzer.

''We haven't had any formal proposals, but we both know the area [of terms],'' Kinzer said Thursday. ''We have a general idea of where we're at. Jim stays in touch, and they're [the Cubs] one of the main teams. Everything is going well.''

Kinzer is in the Dominican Republic to meet with Furcal.

''I told the teams I'd be here this week,'' he said. ''I'm going to go over everything with [Furcal]. Right now, we haven't made a decision. We're looking at all the [interested] teams. But we'll probably make a decision in the next two weeks.''

Furcal is expected to get the most serious proposals from the Cubs and Atlanta Braves, the team that brought him up and would like to retain him.

Furcal has sort of been on the back burner lately, but Levine was just on ESPN 1000 saying that it's a 2-team race for Furcal between the Cubs and the Braves and that he expects something to happen before the winter meetings. Taken with a grain of salt of course.

go braves.

Who is your favored candidate for SS? AGonz? Neifi? Cedeno with all of 80 major league at bats? an injury prone and past his prime Nomar?

Lugo Lugo Lugo Lugo Lugo...

My feeling is that Tampa is going to wait for Furcal to be signed and then start taking bidders unless some team overpays for Lugo right now. IMO it's going to take a top everyday prospect and a top pitching prospect at the least. Is he worth a Cedeno and a Hill?

Is he available? What would it cost the Cubs?

Did Levine say anything about the Cubs or Sox possible interest in Bill Mueller?

Yes, he mentioned him as going to the Sox or to the Cubs as a role player. I believe that's how he worded it.

Tampa Bay supposedly talked to the Braves and Mets about Lugo a few weeks back. Lugo will make $4.95M in 2006, and then will become a free agent. I have no idea what it might cost to get him. But as long as Angel Guzman and Felix Pie are not involved, I would trade any 2 prospects to get him.
