Good, durable players who bring a lot to the table cost a lot of money.

If you want good, durable players who bring a lot to the table for little money, develop them yourself or trade top prospects for them.

Nah Jimmy I hear you. But what would you do: Furcal for 12 a year/5year or Nomar 12 mil over 2 years?

and having a farm system devoid of position players leads you to...free agency where bad contracts are plentiful. and if you do have good position players, you rush them to the bigs so you don't seem incompetent (Patterson).

I agree, the Chubbs suck at developing positional prospects.

Who plays SS in your world next year? I would hope for Nomar, but who do you have?

I want Furcal, but if my only choices are Furcal at $60/5 guaranteed or Nomar at $12/2, I'm using either Neifi or Ronny and spending a boatload of money on the outfield and the pitching staff.

Alright just checking. Though Neifi! absolutely scares the bejesus out of me, seeing as he's one of the 15 wrost hitters all time. HENDRY DO SOMETHING!

What a pile of crap. This "agent's" just posturing for money. Furcal in CF. Right!

I'd rather go w/ Neifi @ SS than Nomar. Neifi would be taking over by mid-April anyway. Just save $6 million and let Nomar sign w/ LA already.

Hello 4th place, hooah!

It could be the alcohol that I drank tonight talking, but I think Furcal's agent is full of it. The mkt determines the price, not some loud mouth Rosenhaus-like agent.

Duuude man, the alcohol I drank said the same thing!

Sure, the market ultimately determines the price, but the performance of an agent can affect the market.

Like Kinzer said, "There's only one Rafael Furcal".

This isn't frozen concentrated orange juice we're talking about.

"Mortimer, your brother is not well!"

I'm sorry, but Furcal is an idiot if he thinks he's going to get 50 million over 5 years. It's all a ploy by his agent. I agree with whoever said its the same thing as Beltran wanting 10 years. It's all a ploy by his agent. I still think we get Furcal, mostly because Hendry has his mind set on him. Go Tigers! Beat Baylor!

Please tell me you're not comparing Rafael Furcal to Shawon Dunston.

I always appreciated Shawon's all out hustle, but man, he was not a good major league baseball player.

Nah Furcal is much better, that is true. But man, didn't Shawon have a cannon? and a group a fans that monitored his Shawon-o-meter?!

boot walker, his $2.5 mil salary and .829 OPS for furcal, his $10 mil salary and his .777 OPS?

um...no thanks.

And ignore the fact that Furcal is 5 years younger, can play a good SS and is a very good base stealer. Walker meanwhile will be 33 on opening day, and is at best an average second baseman. Also the last two seasons where Walker has had over 500 plate appearances his OPS has been .784 and .761.

In 2003 Furcal put up a .795 OPS while stealing 25 bases (in 27 attempts) while Walker put up a .761 OPS in Boston.

I don't like the fact that they're booting an inexpensive Walker either, but it's ridiculous to compare their salaries based solely on last year's OPS.

Very true. Plus there are more 2B that are productive than SS. It is a more demanding position defensively. It's just that these reports about Furcal's cost are ridiculous, and causing some people to freak out.

It says 6 years 50 million which is about 8 million a year. I say a deal something like this

5/42 million fixed.

with a 6th for 8 million that would work.
