I predicted about a month ago that Giles would land in one of these three teams for 2006:

Braves (to be with his brother AND a perennial division winner)

Cardinals (in a position to continue dominating)

Cubs (mostly because of money)

I think his desire is to be on a winning team. I also think he would prefer to stay in the NL. The NL Central is closer to his roots, but his brother is in Atlanta. I don't think there is any chance he goes to the Yankees. At least I would hope not. But, then again, it would certainly be better if he went to the Yankees than the Cardinals.

I'm feeling less than spectacular about the chances of going to the Cubs, since the Cubs don't seem to be all that enthused about him. How unfortunate.

Good points B, but with regard to the Cubs' interest: is it possible that Hendry is trying to not tip his hand (or rather, what he wants his hand to be)? I mean, if we went all gung-ho about how we wanted him, wouldn't he have even more bargaining power than he already has? I'm not terribly optimistic about us landing him, but from what I've read, that's something that Beane does.

How much of an impact can Hendry make in boosting Giles value if the Yankees are knocking on his door?

To me, staying silent is showing him how uninterested you are.

I'd rather show interest than play cards too close to the vest. That way, you avoid looking too indifferent.

Of course, for all we know Hendry's going to offer him 4/$44m tomorrow.

you don't get free agents at a bargain. that's the nature of free agency.

giles will be overpriced for what he brings to the table. yes, i value OBP too.

he'll be a good value for the first 2 years, ok for the 3rd, and a detriment after that. he'll get at least 4 years. don't let SD's lowballing fool you.

One thing Hendry doesn't generally do is play his cards close to the vest when going after someone.

The only reason the Lee trade was such a surprize is because the deal with Baltimore fell through.

I remember that. At the time I think we were all arguing because some thought Lee could even have been non tendered by FL.

What was the deal with BAL supposed to be? All I remember is getting an e-mail from cubs.com that said "Choi for Lee" and wondering why the heck we could get DLee for a guy who'd just sucked it up for us in 03.

Baltimore was chasing Lee. Hard. When Hendry got wind that that fell through, he jumped on Lee. By Hendry's own admission, it happened very quick. In fact, I think he once claimed he woke up the morning of the trade and it came to him and he simply followed up on it.

I confess that while the Lee trade took me by surprise, the shock wore off pretty quickly. Everyone knew that Florida was looking to move him for salary purposes.

I don't think Giles has a preference in the league he plays in. I still believe Giles stays in Cali, and heads to Anaheim(or longshot Oakland because of Jason Kendall). There was a reason why like the Cubs, the Cards were on his list of teams he won't accept a trade to. Now this is FA situation, but I just don't see him leaving home. Bold prediction: Giles signs with Anaheim to play CF/DH, and then Finley gets move to Oakland. Bold prediction 2: I think the Cards are going to re-sign Sanders and trade for Kearns.

I'm still giving Hendry the benefit of doubt. Perez made me go ballistic but I'm going to wait and see how Hendry does. Maybe he will surprise us. :D

And maybe I'll win the lottery.

Of course hendry can't say anything until tomorrow so why read anything into it?

Well, he definitely said he was interested in Furcal the other day.

Looks like BbB was right about SD lowballing the hometown guys.

Hmm....

Pierre

Furcal

Lee

ARam

Giles

Barrett

Murton

Perez/Cedeno

How's that sound Hoops?

I've been in San Diego for about 10 years and I've come to understand the way they do things here. Not well!

Ramon Hernandez is leaving and Giles is waiting at the terminal for his ride out as well. The player the Padres seem the most interested in is Kenji Jojima. That's all well and good, but I'd be really nervous having a catcher who can't communicate with the pitching staff.

It also seems as though they are going to court Jacque Jones. To put this into perspective, here is what this team might look like next year:

Dave Roberts

Mark Loretta

Ryan Klesko

Jacque Jones

X Nady

Vinny Castilla

Khalil Greene

Kenji Jojima/Miguel Olivo

Peavy, Eaton, Park, Williams, Wells?

Trevor Hoffman emptied his locker when the Padres lowballed him as well.

John Moores is spending all the money he is making off the Padres baseball team on developing condominiums and shopping around the stadium rather than on improving the team. They were 6th in attendance with extremely healthy ticket prices last year.

i'll believe that a team run by sandy alderson will go after jacque jones when i see it.

This is a team that recently traded for Vinny Castilla.

Keeping up with Jones

Nov 9 - The Padres are exploring Jacque Jones as an option in the outfield if they can't re-sign Brian Giles, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

"They've got quite a bit of interest," said Jones' agent, Rick Thurman, told the newspaper. "A lot of it depends on Giles. Jacque is interested. San Diego is his home base."

Just to add more fun stuff, the Mets are talking to Hoffman. If they can't get Wagner, they'll work hard to land Hoffman.

That'll be Giles, Ramon Hernandez and Hoffman bolting out of San Diego.

If that isn't enough, David Wells wants to go back to San Diego. San Diego lowballed him last year, so he left for Boston. I believe Boston gave Wells 1m more than San Diego would offer. Wells would have taken 3.5m to stay in San Diego after giving them a home town discount in '04 of 1.5m. The Padres would not give him anymore than 2.5m. I don't know about anyone else, but 3.5m is not bad for a guy who was basically your 2nd best starter in 2004.

Instead, they gave Woody Williams more money than they were offering Wells to replace Wells.

Boston wants Akinori Otsuka for Wells. Just to add injury to insult, Woody Williams WAS a Padre before he went to St. Louis. The Padres traded Woody to St. Louis for Ray Lankford. Lankford proceeded to play less than a season with the Padres (and he was horrible), and the Cardinals picked him back up the next year.

If Wells does go back to San Diego, it will cost them a player AND they will probably have to pick up all of Wells contract, which is more than what they originally offered to him last year. #-o

More fun stuff from this not so smart organization.....Boston and San Diego last worked a deal together just last year. Dave Roberts was with the LA Dodgers, and Boston gave up a crap (never heard of) minor leaguer for Roberts. Boston turned around and traded Roberts to San Diego for a versatile utility infielder (Ramon Vazquez), a versatile 4th outfielder (Jay Payton), a minor league pitcher (probably no more than the other crap minor leaguer Boston gave up with the deal with the Dodgers) and about 2.5m in cash. FOR JUST DAVE ROBERTS!

Good stuff!

Good stuff is right. The other stuff I knew, but I didn't realize they gave up that much for DAVE ROBERTS of all guys.

That was my biggest head scratcher of the 2005 pre season trades.
