Will Furcal cost the Cubs a draft pick?

I'm pretty sure he costs us a 2nd round pick.

Yep.

ATL would most definitely offer Furcal arbitration, which would cost the Cubs 2nd rounder (since our first rounder is protected).

Because the Cubs finished in the bottom 15 right? So if the Cubs sign Giles or Burnett does that cost them a 3rd round pick or do the Padres/Fish get a supplimental pick in the 1st or 2nd round?

So, once ATL offers arbitration, we quickly move for a trade with Tampa for Lugo and let ATL pay Furcal a mountain of money. Lugo has a year left before free agency and will make 4.5m next year.

Pierre, Lugo, Lee, Giles, Ramirez, Murton, Cedeno, Barrett.

By the way, the plan works perfectly if Neifi is the trade chip to Tampa.

Yes.

The Cubs would then lost their 3rd rounder if they were to sign Giles or Burnett. (Surely, both of those teams will offer arbitration to both of those players.)

Where is gets tricky is on who would get the 2nd and who would get the 3rd rounder. That all would depend on who is ranked higher (through the Elias sports bureau rankings) between Furcal, Giles or Burnett. I would assume that all three players will be Type A FA's.

If all three are type A FA's then both teams getting our 2nd and 3rd rounders would also be entitled to receive 1st round Sandwich picks.

Found this little blurb in the Tampa Tribune

While the Rays received several inquiries about closer Danys Baez and outfielder Aubrey Huff at the GM meetings, shortstop Julio Lugo drew the most intense interest from the Braves, who are not expected to re-sign shortstop Rafael Furcal.

Are we just bidding against ourselves for Furcal?

Probably.

It's possible but I like Furcal and hope he comes here for 8mil.

Rumors from the Mets side have really calmed down in the past week or so. According to the New York rags, the Mets are focusing on pitching (Burnett and Wagner are the big names) and, of course, dealing with Manny talk.

Lugo is not Furcal, so let's just squash that idea right now, because it isn't enough of an upgarde over Cedeno's potential. Lugo played way above his head this year, and is a respectable SS, but doesn't have the ceiling of Furcal.

Lugo would have to put up a 2nd career year in a row to slightly out-perform Furcal's career norms in AVG and OBP, but still would produce less power. I expect Lugo to regress to .335 OBP and .730 OPS.

And Neifi is not going to be traded either.

Probably in terms of priority. But in terms of dollars, the bidding is against the market value established for SS over the last 3 years. SS are overpaid, there is no way around it.

Lugo career: .276/.340/.400

Furcal career: .284/.348/.409

Looks pretty similar to me.

Both are capable of hitting up to 15 homers.

Both are capable of stealing 30+ bases.

Both will most likely put up an OBP of around .340 or higher.

They are very similar defensively, although Furcal has the better arm.

Both have had some off-field problems in the past.

The only real differences are that Lugo is a couple years older, costs less salary wise, and would require the Cubs to part with a prospect or two to get.

Lugo isn't a bad idea but I wonder what it would take to get him.

I like Lugo too, but we need to fill at least one hole via FA. We don't have the prospects to fill all our holes with decent players via trade (unless we want a depleted farm system).

Lugo is less likely to hit 15 HR. He hit 13 HR the last 2 years combined with 1197 ABs.

Lugo has only ever put up high SB totals in one year - this past.

Lugo has less range and a weaker arm.

Furcal is the better player and is right at the age for peak production 27/28 breakout.

Moving out of TB into a different ballpark and different lineup, I think Lugo is capable of 10-15 homers again. Lugo has three seasons of over 20 stolen bases in his career. He's capable of it and just needs a manager that will let him run. Outside of Furcal's cannon of an arm, there isn't as big of a difference defensively. Furcal may have slightly better range, but he has been a bit erratic in the field in the past (2005 notwithstanding).

They are similar players. I do agree that Furcal is at an age where he could be expected to take it to the next level. Of course, he could level off, too.

I'm not really advocating one over the other. Furcal will cost more money, whereas Lugo will cost prospects.

If you could have Lugo and Brian Giles or Furcal and Encarnacion, which would you rather have?

I think it would depend on who Tampa would want for Lugo. If there is a lot of interest he may command a Kings ransom.
