If you could have Lugo and Brian Giles or Furcal and Encarnacion, which would you rather have?

No brainer. Lugo/Giles. CPatt already showed Lugo/Furcal are comparable, or close to it. I challenge anyone to show me how Encarnacion has near the value of Giles.

I'll take the first option everyday and twice on Sundays.

What if Lugo cost the Cubs Pie?

Lugo and Giles, no question.

I take Furcal and Encarnacion. There younger, quicker, and they would be cheaper.

Not that I agree that this would be the case, but why should this matter?

Furcal will undoubtedly end up being more overpaid than Giles. Plus, Encarnacion is the exact type of player Hendry would overpay for. This question of value vs. what is paid is more important than the actual amount they receive.

they're probably better in the clubhouse, too, as well as hitting in clutch situations. not to mention the fact that they make a lot of contact and are always seemimgly "making things happen on the basepaths". let's not forget their ability to lay down sacrifice bunts or hit the ball the other way when there's a runner at first.

anyone who takes this post seriously needs to see me in my office.

I wouldn't trade Pie for Lugo. That said, I don't think getting Furcal means having to settle for Encarnacion either.

I don't think the D-Rays would ask for Pie. Well, they might, but I think they'd ask for pitching first and possibly Cedeno. They already have several talented young outfielders...two that are under contract for quite some time.

You're probably right but I'm sure if Lugo is desired by teams like Atlanta that the price is not going to be cheap.

I suppose that would depend on how well Tampa thinks Pie can pitch.

Why on Earth would Tampa want Pie when they already have Baldelli, Gomes, Crawford, Huff, Gathright, Young and likely more guys who can play the outfield?

Tampa would want pitching, and that is something we can certainly offer.

I was just mentioning a top prospect and that Lugo isn't going to just cost money like Furcal is. I have no idea what TB may want but I'm sure with 2-4 teams asking about Lugo it would be pretty steep.

I agree with that.

What I don't agree with is that the Cubs necessarily need a SS (I'm not saying you are making that claim). I think Cedeno can handle the job. I think Walker should stay and leadoff. Let Murton bat second and Cedeno eighth. Take the money that the Cubs want to give to Furcal and throw it at an impact outfielder (RF or CF). Whichever outfield position you don't fill via free agent signing, trade to fill the other. If you have to deal Williams to get an OF, then look to get a #4 or #5 starter somewhere. One of the outfielders should be a left-handed bat.

Of course, that's all easier said than done.

It's not a fair question. You're listing a 2nd option at SS with a 1st option in RF, then a 1st option at SS with a 10th option in RF.

To make it an even statement, I go with Furcal and Floyd.

No, it is a fair question. Lugo/Giles will probably cost about the same amount as Furcal/Encarnacion. Furcal/Floyd would cost more.

The money doesn't matter for the Cubs now regarding these two positions. These are the two prime offseason offensive upgrades. The Cubs have plenty of money.

[edit - Besides, Furcal + Floyd = 17 million, Giles + Lugo = 16 million]

Then the Devil Rays will keep BJ Upton in the minors for another year because no one would trade for Lugo at that cost.

Except that with our GM, I think a better question might be Lugo/Encarnacion or Furcal/Encarnacion. I really doubt Hendry will go that hard after Giles.

He will cost some team some talent Raisin, maybe not Pie talent but some pretty decent talent.

Agreed, but the DRays aren't getting a top-25 MLB prospect for him. They're more likely to get something like Hill and Nolasco for him.

I think the Rays are better off trading Upton for a top-shelf pitching prospect of equal value and keeping Lugo as a respectable SS.

The Rays have lots of young hitting and need more pitching.
