It seems inNeiffable :D that the Cubs will sign Furcal. I like the move if we don't give him TOO much money, but I expect a deal done by the end of next week at the latest.

According to the CBS Sportsline Rumor Mill (via the Arlington Heights paper, whatever that is) the Cubs are ready to offer Furcal 4 years $36 million Friday.

Heresy!

That's the home of our very own, the great Bruce Miles!

That's not terrible. Probably more than what Furcal is worth, but it's not grossly overpaying. I'll take it.

At least Furcal is a definite upgrade over what we had last season.

I don't mind this move, assuming Hendry can pull it off.

I really am glad that we are probably going to get Frucal, not that I wanted him for the money he is going to get. I just want to make sure that Neifi gets as few ABs as possible. Sadly I think it is inNiefable that Niefi will get 400 ABs.

I just meant I couldn't remember the whole name of the paper. Sorry Bruce Miles!

From Bruce's most recent article

One plan the Cubs have sketched out is to sign the Braves’ Furcal — they may offer him $36 million over four years later this week — and use rookie Ronny Cedeno at second base, with Perez serving as a backup at both spots.

What time on Friday can the Cubs extend an "official" offer?

the real question is how fast Furcal accepts/declines. if he declines and starts messing around looking for another year or million, then things are going to get interesting for Hendry. how long does he wait before moving on to Plan B?

Not long. Maybe a couple weeks. He can't afford another offseason like last year, when the perception around the league was he was unable/unwilling to do anything until the chips fell his way on one player (Sosa). The whole league saw how that turned out. Hendry must put forth an aggressive image this year.

Anyone know what the Braves are offering Furcal? I don't think it could be close to that, but it may be. Hopefully the Cubs get Furcal as cheap as they can (if that means 9 mil a year, so be it). We don't want the Cubs bidding against themselves.

Hendry should offer Furcal a deal structured similar to the one I wanted them to offer Beltran last season.

Four guaranteed years.

Fifth year vests with a certain number of games played/started. If Furcal doesn't reach that target, the Cubs can exercise a high-ish option. If the Cubs decline that, Furcal can exercise a low-ish option.

If necessary, add a sixth year under the same terms.

This is me being a nitpicking loser nerd:

"InNeiffable" is a substitution for "ineffable," not "inevitable." "Ineffable" means (because it is a very uncommonly used word) "ununderstandable;" not in the sense that someone speaking gibberish is incomprehensible, but in the sense that the will of God (according to the Bible and those that believe in it) cannot be understood by humans.

Now go back and read the BP person's thing. It's much funnier this way.

Quick question. Assuming we sign Furcal right away, what pick are we giving up in the draft? Did we finish bottom 15 or not? It wouldn't really matter either way, but it'd be better losing a second than a first rounder.

Furcal would be a Type A FA. We'd lose our second rounder.
