1/2 season of winter ball? What a poor attitude.

For those of you who tell non-Corey fans that they don't know his mindset, what he's thinking, how much he cares about the game, this helps solidify that the non-Corey fans are correct.

I'm a fan of Corey's talents, but not a fan of Corey's attitude, intelligence, on-field results or respect for the game.

Towards the end of the regular season, reporters kept asking Corey if he will play winter ball. He telled us a lot by skirting the question. The fact that that question was even asked, tells us that his game needs much improvement and his "answer" tells us that he's not interested in putting in the work to get better.

I'm done with this loser.

Whoa. The line for Corey bashing usually forms right behind me, but this is a bit much. The fact that he is going at all should tell you something about his "mindset." He's a professional athlete for goodness sakes. I'm sure he doesn't enjoy being awful at the plate. Let him go work on it, show up early for spring training- again, and let the winter play out. At least there is an effort to improve.

Playing a 1/2 season of winter ball doesn't tell me anything positive about his mindset. It says he will do just enough to get his critics and Hendry off his back, but not as much as a player who really wants to reach his potential would.

And I'd hope he doesn't enjoy being awful at the plate, but if I were in his shoes when asked by reporters if I'd consider winter ball, I'd enthusiastically respond with a: "YES! I'm having a very poor year and I have disappointed Cubs fans and the team, but I know I can do better. I plan on getting better by playing the game when most MLB players aren't: in winter ball."

"But my game isn't the only thing I need to improve on. I'm also going to adjust my attitude, because there were times when I just didn't care about the game. Remember my 'It's just a game' comment? I'm going to work on my intelligence too."

Yeah. You'd say that. Right.

You're reading way too much into his 1/2 season of winter ball. Besides, why is winter ball the cure for all his ills? Who's to say that one-on-one personal instruction down in Mesa wouldn't be better for him?

He's working on his game this off-season. That's the bottom line. He had a lousy season, and he's working to get better. That's all you can ask of him.

Not to take side in this debate, but as a resident of Puerto Rico, I've seen my share of winter ball over the years, and it ain't what it used to be. I remember about 10 years ago, San Juan's starting lineup featured Edgar Martinez, Juan Gonzalez, Roberto Alomar, Bernie Williams, Carlos Delgado, and others. Ivan Rodriguez played for Mayaguez, Ruben Sierra played for Santurce, etc.

But one year Juan Gonzalez hurt his wrist, and really screwed up his subsequent season with the Rangers. Since then, a lot of players have passed on Winter ball and the talent level has gone from primo to pitchers like Oil Can Boyd, who pitched here in recent years. So it's not like Corey, if he plays here, will be facing top shelf talent.

I can't speak to the talent level in Venezuela, Mexico or the Dominican Republic, though.

Last time I heard anything, Corey had yet to decide whether he was going to play any winter ball. Possibly I missed the article in the Chicago papers.

The team has to talk him up as much as possible so they can trade him. He has been a major disappointment that Hendry needs to unload for whatever he can get-which won't be much.

I have to believe that no matter what Hendry says, or whether or not Corey plays Winter Ball, that Corey gets auctioned of for cents on the dollar this winter.

My caveat is that it's possible that Corey is a part of a larger package deal.

To clarify, though certain beat writers reported that Corey uttered the "it's just a game" comment, it was later confirmed that Corey actually said "it's just the game."

Big difference.

Congrats, Atlanta or Texas. You'll get a fixed Corey for cheap!

I'm aware of that, but believe that his quote was "corrected" as a cover up. I think the first interpretation is correct because it's certainly consistent with his attitude.

Anyone know about Cory Patterson's status regarding winter ball? Is he planning to go and work on his game or is he flipping through the yellow pages looking for a moving company for the inpending trade?

Depending on the signing of Furcal. I'd give CP another chance if he did something over the winter to get better and if Furcal takes the lead off spot, thus taking the pressure off CP to play his game.

IF Corey plays at WB, does VERY good (I mean like .300 w/ .350 OBP good), then I am willing to give Corey another chance and root for him. With Furcal, atleast friggin Dusty would keep Corey batting 8th or something. Where Corey and just relax, and have more room to improve with no major pressure on him.

No Warp it helps. Because it is not good enough that he had a bad year he also MUST have some personality faults too. It makes it so much more fun to not just hate the baseball player but hate the person too.

Did I make up the fact that Corey said baseball was just a game?

Did I make up the fact that Corey only wants to play 1/2 of Winter ball?

I think those two decisions allow the fan some insight to the mindset/desire/attitude of CP.

I blame the Cubs organization more for Corey's 2005 bomb than I do Corey Patterson. It wasn't his fault he was thrust into a situation he wasn't prepared for. He should have spent 2-3 more seasons in the minors, but the organization decided we needed a home grown position player on the big league team.

It's like asking a sixth grader to get passing grades in high school level classes and then complaining that he/she failed because of mental makeup.

Yeah sure. My post was a lame joke making fun of the jabs you were receiving. Sorry it stunk, but you have to try sometimes.

My avatar is a picture of Rick Monday rescuing the Flag from some anti-American nuts who were trying to light it on fire during a game at Dodger stadium. The game was on April 25th, 1976. I have always thought that was an underrated moment in Cubs history.

Wow, that's beautiful.

I found this link on the event. Touching read.

The article said that a picture of Monday grabbing the flag from the anti-Americans won a Pulitzer Prize. Perhaps the one you're displaying in your avatar.
