And the Cubs will not pick up Jeromy Burnitz's $7 million option, making him a free agent. Burnitz, 36, may be considering retirement. Hendry has three more days to decide on infielder Todd Walker's $2.5 million option, while multi-purpose pitcher Glendon Rusch mulls over whether to exercise his own option for '06.

One of the most interesting decisions facing Hendry is whether to bring back center fielder Corey Patterson, who regressed at the plate and in the field in '05. Texas is rumored to be interested in making a deal for Patterson, and Hendry is expected to get other feelers if he decides to trade the enigmatic outfielder.

whew on burnitz. get moving on walker, please. become a free agent, glendon.

don't know how i feel about corey...

I hope Burnitz does not come back because I don't know how much he will decline...after all he is getting up there in years. But he was an able replacement for Sammy and seemed to be one of the Cubs that was always in the middle of anything good that happened in 2005. I hope Jeromy knows that we Cub fans appreciated his game effort this year, which was always a constant even if his offense was not.

Please pick up Walker's option. We're not going to get a better second baseman for that amount of money and he is one of my favorite guys on the team.

I'd keep Corey around this year, if only because we know that he will go to the bench without causing too much of a fuss, enabling us to have a backup plan in case we come up with nothing in center field.

Not enough to justify trading him. No reason to sell low; we have nothing to gain by trading him.

As for him pouting, where do you get that idea? He expressed disappointment but didn't cause any stir when sent down to AAA. And Corey has never shown anything to indicate that there's anything wrong with his attitude. I'm not sure where people get this idea that he's any sort of a problem in that department.

I bet the hold up on walker is that we only pick up the option if texas agrees to take him, corey, and mitre for Soriano. :pukel: :pukel: :pukel: :pukel:

Yuck. No, thanks, Jim. If you were even thinking about that, then stop right now!

pansy, he doesn't even care, look at him.

It's ridiculous to make inferences to a person's character based on their expressions. People respond differently to different situations.

And the feeling I get with Corey is that he is content at where he is at, with his baseball career. Which is unacceptable. Where is the competitor? Where is the "drive?" I'm sorry, this whole buying low/selling high crap is overrated. It's obviously Corey doesn't figure in the long-term plans of the Cubs, so if the organization can pick up a player or two, that CAN LEGITMATELY help the Cubs organization---something Corey can't/won't do---then regardless of talent, Hendry should do it. Corey won't reached "high value" with the Cubs.

I thought you didn't normally make such acusations. Every freaking post is some sort of pop-psychology nonsense. Have you ever met Patterson or Jenks, or Farnsworth?

You'd rather he toss bats and break chairs and kick electric fans?

If anything, CPatt is more professional and has a better attitude than most players because he can show restraint and coolness when the fans are booing him and he's having a terrible time at the plate. How many of us could say the same?

Here's my thoughts:

1. Thanks for the memories, Jeromy. You're a hard-nosed ball player. Go ahead and retire.

2. I think Walker provides a real decision for Hendry. Hendry would like to improve defense up the middle, but he doesn't know what he can get in a trade or through free agency to do that. He's also been a straight shooter. Walker signed an inexspensive deal because he wanted to be a Cub. Hendry probably feels that if Walker isn't in the team's plans he should decline the option and let Walker find his own employment on his own terms. That for me is what is causing the indecsion there.

3. If Texas wants Patterson, I can see a few possibilities.

a. Patterson and Mitre for Soriano if Walker is let go.

b. Patterson and Mitre for Mench.

c. Patterson for prospects.

Burnitz no longer hits well enough to be a starting corner OF but I suppose some team might want him in a caretaker role if they have a minor league LF/RF who's almost ready for the bigs. There are also small market teams that can't afford anybody better.

I don't get that, at all. Wasn't he the first person at Spring Training this year? Hasn't he been working with the Cubs on his swing (in Mesa?) since immediately after the season ended?

Oh, but he doesn't through a fit when he strikes out. I guess he doesn't have the "drive".

I'm not to big on Soriano, but option a. and b. sound good to me. I like Corey, but he has worn out his welcome in Chicago. He would not be any help sitting on the bench.

my problem with corey is that he continues to be a dumb baseball player. i have no problem with his attitude, as far as it doesn't keep him from making the appropriate changes to his approach at the plate. he has shown absolutely NO intention of shrinking his strike zone down. this is my only quarrel.

Does TX want to dump Sori's contract?? Figured it would take at least Patterson & J. Williams. Probably more.

I won't question Corey's work ethic, but I feel that he just doesn't get it.

I could see Texas being very interested in dumping Soriano. They could use the freed up money to go after pitching. The Dallas Morning News reported that they have interest in Burnett, Millwood, and Wagner. Unloading Soriano would open up room for them to pursue those players. They also have some interest in Kornerko as a DH even though they now have Nevin. Also, I know the Rangers have a desire to move Michael Young back to second if they could deal Soriano. So, I don't think the price for Soriano would be as high as many people think.

Furthermore, Patterson might be a good player for Texas. They have a short leftfield porch and a favorable ballpark for hitting. Sure he'll K and have a horrible OBP, but he could hit 35-40 HRs in that park.
