Regardless of whether or not the Cubs upgrade elsewhere, Murton is the type of player you want give a job to. If you take what the Cubs did in LF last season with and without Murton, it's amazing. In his 144 pa with the Cubs in LF, he was worth 19 more runs than the rest of the clowns the Cubs trotted out there. On defense, he was better as well. He was worth 1 more run at his position than the others. It's hard to find anyone at his salary level who will give you the production at the plate and not hurt you on defense.

The only case the Cubs could ever make for keeping Burnitz is that he's above average defensively in RF. That's not enough when evaluating a RF. It's too painful to discuss Patterson's production, rather, negative production.

huh??

Matt Murton = Cubs 2006 starting LFer.

I think he is saying that Murton should be our starting leftfielder next year. I could be misinterpreting what he is saying though.

Exactly. Matt Murton = Cubs 2006 starting LFer means exactly what it says. Matt Murton should be the Cubs starting left fielder for 2006.

LF is short for both Left Fielder and Left Field. It's like RBI stands for runs batted in and run batted in, RBIs doesn't make sense either.

wow you guys are fight about stupid stuff haha....But yeah I think Matt Murton is ready to be the Cubs Left Fielder I mean he proved a lot in the 2nd half of the season...He did better then anyone else in the Cubs outfield..With exception to Burnitz...

if the cubs lose out on giles & trade for tracy to play right, they will have 2 red heads starting in the of. how much of a drop off would tracy be from giles? he is certainly younger than giles.

Uh...Post All-Star numbers:

Murton --> 316/377/515

Burnitz --> 237/300/387

I think he way outperformed Burnitz. Move that qualifier and you have a true statement.

How many ABs did Murton have compared to Burnitz...Yeah sit down and shut the hell up....You can say Murton had a better season but you would be god damn lying he ad like 150 AB's compared tp JB's 400 or whatever he had....So die....Good day....

Could Murton be our leadoff hitter? I realize he might not steal 40 bags a season, but a .350+ obp at the top spot would be very nice.

A lineup of:

Murton

Walker

Lee

Giles

Ramirez

Nomar

Cameron

Barrett

would make me very happy. Everyone in that lineup would have OBPs around .340, and the outfield offense would be vastly improved.

That means Neifi Perez and Jose Macias must have been pretty damn good then! :wink:

Murton is also my choice for the Cubs 2006 starting left fielder. He impressed me with his batting approach and plate patience--especially considering he didn't always get regular PAs.

I hesitate to say he's proven, but for the money he makes, I do believe he's proven enough to be giving the starting job with a good ST.

So yes, part of the reason I want him starting in LF is because of the money that leaves to fulfill other positions--starting with the guy playing next to him.

And also an early knock on him was that he lacked power. Granted, he isn't going to give Manny Ramirez or Barry Bonds anything to worry about, but I've compared him to Mark Grace before, and I'll stick by that. If we get Mark Grace-like production out of Murton in left, I'll be thrilled.

i love Murton's plate discipline. his D could improve, but he's still better than Holly/Dubois defensively, so I can't complain too much. if murton can consistently display the power he showed at the end of this last season, we're going to have one heck of a player for the money.

Grace-like numbers would be quite agreeable, but I think Murton has more power than that. If only a little more. I could see 20+ HRs from him a realisitic possibility year after year. Gracie rarely topped 20.

As far as Murton being the Cubs starting LFer in '06, I think he has earned it. Naturally, if he produces like Holla did out of the gate, Baker will start tinkering, but I don't see him doing that.

Could Murton handle center? If we were able to land two huge bats for right field and left field. One bat being Giles.

Never topped 20, actually. It was expected he eventually would, too.

From what I've seen, he just doesn't have the range. You'd have to flank him with CF types, and that would defeat the purpose altogether.

Regardless of how much profanity you use, it doesn't change the fact that Murton's season was better than Burnitz. Burnitz was a nice player, but his complete lack of production in the second half was one of the factors that doomed this team to failure.

And the fact that he had 400 AB's to Murton's 150 just means he had more chances to let his suckitude drag down the team.

Don't take it personally if he doesn't respond to you.

It's ok. I won't. I hope he's not upset that I didn't die. :P
