From the Braves mailbag on MLB.com:

Obviously, Furcal will command plenty of attention on the free-agent market. Going in the Braves' favor is the fact that he wants to remain in Atlanta and stick with the only organization that he's known.

Braves general manager John Schuerholz is working on striking a deal that would bring Furcal back. The cost will likely be in the neighborhood of $9-10 million per season. With this in mind, the club might have to move Johnny Estrada, Marcus Giles, Horacio Ramirez or Jorge Sosa, all of whom are expected to receive large raises as arbitration-eligible players.

We would all be interested in Marcus Giles, but what of the other players mentioned? I wouldn't mind having either of Ramirez or Sosa as a fifth starter, and would anyone be interested in replacing Barrett with Estrada?

If the Braves need to move salary, is there any way the Cubs could pry both Giles and one of Ramirez or Sosa away from them?

I think trading for Marcus Giles will spark Brian Giles interest.

If they want to play together, this is probably the only year they can make it happen.

I just wouldn't have the slightest clue what Atlanta would want from us to give up such quality talent. I wonder if it would require taking Chipper Jones or Mike Hampton? Hampton being injured makes that nearly impossible.

I'd certainly be on the phone with them.

atlanta overpaying for Furcal is the best news i've heard in a while.

<<< not a Furcal fan.

Marcus Giles would look good in Cubbie blue. It might actually make Chicago a preferred destination for his brother (and i like Marcus at 2B regardless).

Hendry, I love you. Don't disappoint me.

That would be nice. Is M. Giles minus prospects or whatever the Cubs trade worth more than Walker if the Cubs don't sign B. Giles?

In my opinion, yes. He brings everything Walker brings offensively and plays better defense.

I guess that depends on what prospects I'm offering, but I would consider Giles a nice upgrade there.

The odds of us getting fleeced by the Braves are very, very good.
What makes you say that?

Because I cannot think of a single trade that John Scherholtz got fleeced in. Not one.

The Cards did alright on the JD Drew trade:

AT gotL: J. D. Drew and Eli Marrero

STL got: Jason Marquis, Ray King and Adam Wainwright + payroll relief

The Braves got one great year of production where the Cards got a few solid season. In the end it was a wash unless Wainwright ends up doing something.

I forgot how the Hampton deal worked out for the Braves...doe anyone remember the exact deal?

Here's the full story:

http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/1118/1462593.html

First, the Marlins acquired Hampton, outfielder Juan Pierre and $6.5 million from the Rockies in exchange for Johnson, Wilson, left-handed reliever Vic Darensbourg and second base prospect Pablo Ozuna.

Florida was anxious to dump the contracts of Johnson ($26 million over the next three years) and Wilson (owed $28 million through 2005). But in order to move Hampton, the Marlins agreed to pay Atlanta $30 million over the next three years.

The Braves sent the Marlins reliever Tim Spooneybarger, who was 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA and one save in 51 games, and minor league pitcher Ryan Baker. Spooneybarger could become Florida's closer.

Atlanta is on the hook for only $5.5 million of Hampton's contract over the next three years, then picks up the remainder of what he is owed: $13.5 million in 2006, $14.5 in '07 and $15 million in '08.

But the first three years were crucial, increasing the possibility of the Braves re-signing Glavine and/or Maddux.

Considering the Braves will get insurance $ for because of Hampton's injuery I think they did alright.

Thanks CFICT! Do the Braves get reimbursed the whole salary? Also, is Hampton done for his career?

I've ready anywhere of 66% to 80%. He's out until 07 with Tommy John surgery. I guess this wasn't a good deal for the braves after all.

9-10 mil for Furcal? I like him and all but that is a pretty steep price.

I really don't see a $9 million difference between Furcal and Cedeno. I think Cedeno will match Furcal within 2 years. Of course, that's assuming Dusty will play him.

Denny Neagle...and yes, he had a GREAT 1997...

But still, imagine if we gave up Prior or Z a few years ago for 2.5 years of a very good (at best) veteran pitcher... I wouldn't be too happy.

EDIT - This probably would look a lot better for me in 2003... With Schmidt's recent decline/injuries, not as much...

Who was the 1B prospect they gave up in that trade anyway?
