Mark Cuban, please.

Couldn't agree more..He would put a winner on the field...

Doesn't Cuban employ a bunch of "stat-geeks" to operate the Mavericks and help make personnel decisions? I could see the Cubs becoming the ultimate "moneyball" team, payroll and all.

1. Anyone else ever notice that when the Tribune Company/Cub senior executives talk about their "competitive" payroll it's strictly on a current fiscal year revenue vs expense basis? They never mention that their investment in the Cubs has increased almost 30 fold ($20.5 mill. to $550 mill.) in 24 years or all the other ancillliary revenue the Cubs bring in.

Wouldn't it be nice if they put some of that money back into the product?

2. I can't believe the Tribune company's stake in the food network is worth more than the Cubs.

Yeah, the Mavs sure have racked up the NBA championships since he bought them...

Mark Cuban is entertaining but until Dallas wins an NBA title they're just another team. And they'll still be just another team next spring.

He gives a damn. He put money into the team and turned it from a joke into a perennial contender. That works for me.

Be careful what you wish for, because you might just get it.

There are owners that are better then the Tribune, that is true. But there are lots and lots of owners that are a lot worse then the Tribune

Watch the Cubs go for sale and the guy that owns the Black Hawks buys them.

If Wertz/Werts comes anywhere NEAR the Cubs organization.... I don't know what I'll do.

I think it's funny how whenever someone's team goes up for sale no matter the sport everybody immediately clamors for Cube's. When the Blues were for sale I practiacally praying for the man to buy them. What a guy.

Yea, god forbid someone else would buy them and have to follow in the giant championship footsteps put forth by Tribco.

I'd imagine the number of potential buyers who could keep the payroll this high and allow the Cubs to keep pretty much all of new revenue for use towards payroll while not making the team pay for Wrigley Field expansion and maintenance in the future is pretty low. One of the only reasons why a new owner would be attractive is if it meant the end of the MacPhail era and a change in philosophy, but that's far from guaranteed under new ownership.

And again, new ownership would make the team less profitable since they'd be separated from WGN. It might also very well mean the end of games on WGN if a deal couldn't be reached.

Selling the Cubs could be a good or bad move for the Trib. While the Cubs are a nice asset and the Trib is able to get a less than market-value deal to broadcast games on WGN, selling the team would produce an enormous influx of cash. Baseball teams rarely make anyone money until you sell them.

The Cubs would likely sell for 500-750 million dollars. That amount of cash flowing immediately into the Trib cofers likely helps raise stock prices instantly.

If the Cubs are sold, a broadcast arrangement could be negotiated into the sale. This would keep some Cubs games on WGN, but only for as long as the agreement. Eventually, those games would be subject to open bidding.

Thinking about that is making me slightly nauseous.

Wuertz would actually have to spend money to buy the Cubs. He wouldn't think of doing that. He's a bottom feeder.

You know, I wrote that and was thinking, "this doesn't look right.". I just now figured it out. Wirtz.
