Whatdayaknow? We've got a Pie sighting tonight. He went 2-4 with a walk, a run scored, and a strikeout while batting second in the lineup for Licey.

Pretty disappointing. I wouldn't have even minded the batting averag, but I wanted to see that OBP go up. I would have taken that BA is he put up a .310ish OBP to go along with it. Currently the difference there between BA and OBP is about the same it has been. I don't know if theres a stat that looks at something like that with more detail, but looking at it very simply it appears that his OBP is still highly dependant on his AVG.

I'm willing to discount these numbers for the time being due to the fact that Pie took a good amount of time off from baseball thanks to the Cubs holding him out while he recovered from his bone bruise.

If he struggles in AA or AAA next season, then I'll be worried.

My fear is that Pie may get thrown into the mix in 2006 and become another CPatt. If Hendry fails in getting somebody to play CF or leadoff I see Pie in the opening day lineup if he does well in Spring Training.

True, this is more like Spring Training for Pie than most of the other guys.

Wasn't there a quote out there supposedly from Hendry that Pie wasn't going to make the team until '07 at the earliest? I would hope that is true.

The opposite. Several reports(including Hendry himself I believe) said that Pie would have been up last year if not for his injury.

I know Pie is young but I don't have hope that he will develop as much plate discipline as we would like. This is his third season in profesional baseball and he has not progressed in that department. He has been getting by beacuse he has the most talent on the fieild. I think we are all going to have to hope his talent carries him.

Yeah, I heard that too. But I saw a quote within the last week that said he isn't slated to get called up during the '06 season. I wish I could recall where I read that, because it stuck out so much to me because Hendry said he would have been called up this last year had he not gotten hurt.

Yeah, I read that somewhere in Transactions recently too.

Pie went 0-4 with a sac fly RBI, a run scored after he reached on an error, and a strikeout tonight.

Marmol did pick up the win in relief by pitching 1.1 perfect innings and striking out two, though.

I'll concede that this does indeed happen with a lot of guys, especially power hitters. Sometimes, you have to make certain sacrifices in order to gain the benefits of that kind of player (see: Adam Dunn, BBs, Ks, and HRs).

However, in other cases, sometimes the light goes on for guys. Pie is still quite young for AA as it is, so this isn't like we're dealing with a guy who has little to no room for growth. There still is plenty of time for the Cubs to at least wait for him to develop better pitch recognition so that he can walk more often than he does.

We'll see on this front. For now, I'd just like to see him get back to 100% at the plate and on the field.

Plus, Pie has shown improvements in other weaknesses in his game (most recently, the increase in power).

I've noticed a lot of posters hope that Pie stays in the minors in order improve his plate discipline. Do players actually improve their plate discipline more in the minors then they would in the majors? Has there been a study done on this? Thanks in advance!

I think that it is tied to playing time. A prospect gets more AB's in the minors, and can work on palte discipline more.

Add the Dusty factor and so much more so.

If you don't have it, you're probably never going to. Pie will never have an even or better K/BB ratio, but there is some room for improvement when you're at 3:1.

Players from Pie's neck of the woods are notorious free swingers. They're taught from a young age that you have to swing the bat to get anywhere (pro ball).

There's a tendency in the minors to allow for a player to have more room to make adjustments than in the majors. In the minors, no one cares if a guy goes on an extended slump because he's working on a new swing or because he's getting used to throwing a curveball from a new arm slot. If those things result in positive results for that player and they make a habit out of it, then yes, it will improve that aspect of a player.

However, in the majors, especially for young players, there is very little room for that kind of thing. You do try to hone your game at a major league level, but the margin for error is much smaller. You're playing in front of larger crowds in more meaningful games. That ain't the best time to try out a new batting stance, ya know?

Pie can work on developing good habits in the minors. While it's likely he'll never be an OBP machine, he could at least develop better strike zone recognition if given more time in the minors, imo.

The pitchers in the minors have worse control, which should make taking more pitches easier. Hopefully the eye has improved once you graduate to the big leagues.

The reasons for keeping Pie in the minors go beyond just working on his eye. He needs to work on his game as a whole. He's still very young, and has a lot to improve upon. He's fast, but not an efficient base stealer. Many people rave about his defensive abilities, but others consider him a bit raw in that department. And he's just not that great yet. If he tears up AA this season, then I wouldn't hesitate to call him up to the bigs late in the year, but he just hasn't done enough in the minors to warrent a big league job right now.

Goony - do you think Pie WILL start at AA next year? Do you think he SHOULD start at AA? I had not really thought about this, but which league is really more difficult for a hitter? It seems that AAA batting statistics seem to be greatly increased over AA statistics. In reality, will a hitter such as Pie learn more at the AA level or the AAA level?
