This came up on a Cards board I read, and is also up on a Houston board I don't read. We thought it would be interesting to compare the answers from the different boards.

I'll let you guys know what the results are from the other boards.

My own personal opinion is that the best rivalry is Cubs-Cards. It's usually pretty competitive no matter the records, and I find that my Cardinal fan friends and family are a little friendlier about it than the Astros fans I know. I hate the Astros to the point that it's not an enjoyable rivalry for me. I just hate them--period.

i dont see how this is even close. you cant go to busch, regardless of the opponent, and not see some version of a cubs suck shirt.

When we see Astros fans in St Louis for those series, then we'll talk. But easily, Cubs vs Cards. I don't see why this is even an argument, because IMO Cubs/Cards is the best rivalry in the NL period.

Definitely Cubs vs. Cards. They've been rivals since way before the Astros even joined the league. Cubs vs. Cardinals is up there with Giants vs. Dodgers and Yankees vs. Red Sox.

Yeah, this is an easy one. Cards-Cubs has been going on for over 100 years and they are two of the oldest teams in all of baseball. The Astros have no identity. They're just some team. The absurd cartoon ballpark they play in is a perfect example of that, like some disney land version of baseball.

Here's how Buzz Bissinger described Cardinals-Cubs in "Three Nights in August:"

"The Rivalry between the Cubs and the Cardinals is probably the oldest and perhaps the best in baseball, no matter how the Red Sox and Yankees spit and spite at each other. That's a tabloid-fueled soap opera about money and ego and sound bites. That's a pair of bratty high-priced supermodels trying to trip each other in their stilettos on the runway. But the Cards-Cubs epic is about roots and geography and territorial rights. It's entwined in the Midwestern blood and therefore refreshing and honest and even heroic. It isn't simply two teams throwing tantrums at each other but two fuedal city-states with eternal fans far beyond their own walls, spread throughout not only the Midwest but also deep into the South and the West." p. 20

To the fans, yes its easily Cubs/Cards. But to the players...its Cards/Astros. Its pretty much been that way since 96

I don't know if I agree. Player on both the Cubs and the Cardinals have said they'd rather see Houston win than their traditional rival.
