    Old audio archives...KMOX used to play them sometimes, and my husband has some Jack Buck CD compilations that have Buck and Caray games on it. You can sometimes get WGN radio in North County, and I can sometimes pull it in when I am in Clayton/UCity (where I work) if I'm in my car with the strongest tuner. They used to be on 880 AM (weird low-wattage station on the East Side) but I can't find them on it this year. I rely on MLB Audio for my Pat-and-Ronness.

    I adore Pat and Ron. I also liked Harry and Steve. From listening to the archives, though, I think the best team I've heard was Jack Buck and Harry Caray. Harry was still coherent and the two of them together were professional, knowledgeable, and still enjoyable to listen to. Pat and Ron, though, are my lifeline here in St. Louis (well, now that I have WGN, the TV crew helps) and I definitely appreciate them!

    Ah...see I didn't see the caption. I just rotated the computer around and said, "Hey, who is this guy?" and Cardinals fan husband filled me in. I'll have to update him.

    this picture is such an accurate metaphor for the usefulness of small-ball since the end of the dead-ball era. The Cardinals fan husband tells me that this is George Kissel, who a quick search reveals is 96 years old and has been with the Cards as a minor league coach and hitting instructor for 66 years. Evidently Branch Rickey brought him on board and he's been around ever since. Kind of like the coaching version of Yosh. :)

    My husband has applied for the Stats Stringer position for the Cards every year since we moved to St. Louis. He is a software engineer who can alter his schedule to make every game and he hasn't even sniffed an interview. My (cynical) guess is that these jobs go to the college age/recently graduated children of the owners or employees' friends.

    I never, ever thought the day would come when Sammy Sosa would be serving as a diplomat/envoy/representative. Crazy.

    Honest to God, Jimmay has been known to change his jersey in the middle of a game if the first one gets too dirty. No word as to whether he has his hair touched up between innings, though.

    I wound up with six tickets for July 28 and six for July 29, six tickets for June 28th (build-a-bear day--family game) and two bleacher seats for April 9. And I tried to get bleacher seats for ndistops but failed. :( Next year I shall endeavor to be Queen of the VWR!

    I just bought a pair of bleacher tickets to the Sunday night opener on April 9. If anyone's interested in them, PM me. If I haven't heard from anyone by tonight, I'll throw them up on ebay to recoup some of the cost of my other expenditures today, but offering them to fellow NSBBers seemed like the decent thing to do.

    6 Tickets for July 29 vs. the Cards. Seats are just ok...they must be about sold out.

    I've noticed from last year and this year that there seem to be several stages of ticket buying: 1) Anticipation 2) Glee/Hope <-- Glee if you've got tickets, hope if you don't 3) Glee/Frustration 4) Glee/Hopelessness <-- at this point you can go back up to stage 2 if you hear of someone else getting tickets later in the day 5) Glee/Anger at the system, Jealousy toward those who have tickets 6) Glee/Resignation I'm still at stage 2. For the moment.

    The question that has been rolling around in my head, and was not answered by this piece, is that given how the Cubs organization have handled players with (alleged) drinking problems in the very recent past, is Furcal going to think it would be a good move for his recovery to come here? He had a half-season to listen to/witness a testimonial. I wonder how that will weigh in to his decision?

    This came up on a Cards board I read, and is also up on a Houston board I don't read. We thought it would be interesting to compare the answers from the different boards. I'll let you guys know what the results are from the other boards. My own personal opinion is that the best rivalry is Cubs-Cards. It's usually pretty competitive no matter the records, and I find that my Cardinal fan friends and family are a little friendlier about it than the Astros fans I know. I hate the Astros to the point that it's not an enjoyable rivalry for me. I just hate them--period.

    My son will be most disappointed. Although he is a Cards fan, he's been asking me all season if it's time for the big explosion yet. He's 6, so things that go "BOOM" appeal to him. :)

    I don't mean to rain on anyone's self-pity parade, but for those who have lost family members to gun violence or to suicide, gun and suicide jokes are never funny. You can express your displeasure without upsetting others, I think.
