My current away message says:

Congratulations on the White Sox winning the 2005 AL pennant.

Now don't say a word to me about it or I'll punch you in the face.

Posted

Kerry Wood: 174 lifetime starts, 11 lifetime complete games.

Mark Prior: 97 lifetime starts, 5 lifetime complete games.

Carlos Zambrano: 113 lifetime starts, 6 lifetime complete games.

2005--

Garland + Buerhle + Garcia + Contreras = 9 regular season complete games, plus the playoffs.

I'm just sayin'........

I can imagine the talking which would happen is they win the WS, but I for one rather have the WSox win it over the Cards and Stros. I was born and raised in Chicago and even though I am not a WSox fan, I am glad for the city to at least possibly taste a WS. As for us well...Same ol story year after year.

This is not meant to sound mean, but why do people feel they have to be happy for the White Sox even if they are from Chicago? They are a crosstown rival. You'll never hear Mets and Yankees fans cheering for the other or the Dodger and Angels doing likewise. People are entitled to their opinions, but I guess I just don't understand the Sox love.

Because to some of us the White Sox aren't a rival, to some of us they are the equivalent of the Baltimore Orioles. Because to some of us oh say maybe the CARDINALS and the ASTROS are our real rivals. There is a rivalry to me 6 times a year. I have Cubs fans friends and I have Sox fans friends and we're civil, some Sox fans are annoying and guess what we as Cubs fans are annoying to but that's pro sports.

I wasn't even addressing their fans, though that's a whole other issue entirely. I'm also not advocating pulling for Houston or St. Louis. I hate both those teams just as much. But we are kidding ourselves if we think Cubs-Sox is not a rivalry too. If it kills you to root for one of the last two NL teams, then do what I'm doing this World Series: ignore it and pretend it never happened.

Posted
Oh I agree there is a rivalry, and I don't think that just because they are from Chicago is any reason to root for them. But me personally I don't dislike like them just because I'm suppose to, my official stance is if they win great, if they lose great. I put myself in a win win instead of a lose lose situation.

I think we can all be fans of good baseball and the White Sox certainly pitched good baseball. Bummer for the Angels but they looked like they never caught up on their sleep.

Isn't that the very definition of a bandwagon fan?

Not really since i'm not going to celebrate if the Sox win or anythign and buy hats and shirts or even really care. I'm just not going to be terribly upset if they win. You know.. if they win good for them, i'm not going to cry and think about how horrible it is.

Win Win

Posted

What i meant was Win (the sox win... I don't care) / Win (the sox lose... I don't care but that's good because i like the cubs).

(maybe I should take the sox picture out of my sig, i think it's giving the wrong impression )

I never ever ever thought I would see the Sox in the Series before the Cubs. The Cubs franchise was an embarrassment before this and now it's magnified.

Also shout-outs to stupid Neifi Perez, Jose Macias, Lenny Harris, Damian Miller, Paul Bako, Damian Jackson, Rey Ordonez, Shawn Estes, Dave Veres and any other ridiculous "players" the Cubs have put out on the field in the past few seasons.

The Sox have been killing their opponents from day 1, and they have more than earned their way here - no fluke about it. I also think they will have a harder time with the Astros (I know better than to take a 3-1 LCS lead to the bank, I'm just hoping..) than most people believe, but I still have trouble seeing anyone stopping the tear they've been on.

That said, I can't offer my congrats. By the time the WS is over, I'll be too apathetic, so maybe afterward, but not now. They have to win it first. I'll do the next best thing and adopt the Sox mentality and turn their success into something negative as it pertains to the Cubs. I'm really hating life as a Cubs fan. I didn't think there could be a lower point to the year than the absolutely pitiful and embarrassing experience in Atlanta, but I think we've found it.

There have been a couple references in this thread to "Stupid Alex Gonzalez." That's because that inning (and losing that series) was the only point in the last 20 years when it sucked worse to be a Cubs fan than it does right now.

Go Astros.

Congrats to the South Side Brats.

I'm happy someone in chicago is going to the World Series. Wish it was the Cubs but it the ugly unpopular little sister got there first.

I watched last night, watched them win. Turned off the TV and went to bed. If it was the Cubs I'd a been wired all night.

It's good to see basic baseball being played so well. It just brings to the forefront how basically bad the Cubs were the last 2 years.

The sox pitchers looked awsome. I couldn't see Prior, Wood or Zambo doing that, Sorry Just couldn't.

The Cubs, it seems to me, played 2003 scared. Waiting for something to happen. The White Sox ignore that type playing and roll past it like a steam roller.

They have the momentum going in to the WS. I'd like to see them win.

It's a good example to the Cubs organization of how to get it done!! I hope their watching.

Call it luck, and it probably has a lot to do with it, but they are COASTING through the playoffs. It's really hard for me to envision them losing the World Series. Kinda like how you just knew the Red Sox were gonna dominate the Cardinals last year...it looks a lot like that for the White Sox right now.

Astros are coasting through the NL too. Made quick work of more balanced teams then the White Sox have to face. Astros in 6. They are a better pitched team and the White Sox will struggle in Houston.

I'm sure the networks aren't too excited about an Astro/White Sox series. It might be a great series if you love 1-0, 2-1, and 2-0 kind of games. I give the Sox credit for having a great season and taking advantage of every break and piece of luck that they got. That's not sour grapes because that's what good teams do. I've posted in an earlier thread that the Sox could be in trouble next year if they lose Konerko and don't get the "career years" out of the 6-7 players that had them this year. Congrats to the Sox and hopefully the WS can end quickly so the Hot Stove can get heated up.

As an out of towner, out of stater, out of regioner (is that even a word?) Cubs fan. I'm struggling to understand the rivalry between the Sox and Cubs. It seems to me, that since they are in a different league, that most Cubs fans would just be indifferent to Sox fans.

I mean, as an Ole Miss Rebel, our rivals are Mississippi State and LSU....because we actually PLAY them when it matters alot of the time. When I think of Cubs' rivals I think of Cards and Astros.

Can someone civilly explain to me the anonymosity alot of you native Chicagoans have for Sox fans?

Are they trashy or what is it about them that inspires such hatred towards a team that we rarely play.

Posted
I hope the Sox beat the Stros/Cards like the minority on here. I guess I just hate all but one NL Central team more then the Sox. It is just nice to see a Chicago baseball team play the game well. While I was happy for the Sox I wasn't standing up and cheering at all... just more like "Wow.... I'm jealous"-type of vibe. I'm sure half of the people who were partying out at the quad at ISU after the game had no idea why they were partying... it was pretty funny to hear. I didn't join them though.... i'm not that type of bandwagon fan.

Ole Miss:

One theory is that most Sox fans are viewed as hard, blue-collar workers while most Cub fans are viewed as white collar workers.

Another theory is that most Sox fans are viewed as knowlegeable baseball fans while most Cub fans only attend Wrigley field for the party atmosphere.

IMHO, it is not a rivalry of baseball teams or competitiveness or sports but it is personal...

...and by the way, I WISHED I went to Ole Miss...maybe in another life.

Some of my good friends are Sox fans, and to them, I say congrats. The City of Chicago deserves a World Series championship. I just wish it was being played on the north side of town.

Why do I hate the Sox? A simple example of many in my lifetime......

Every day I walk to the Metra station on my way home. Since the playoffs began there has been a t-shirt vendor selling t-shirts in front of the Metra station on Madison. Do you think his t-shirts say "Way to go Sox!", or "Sox 2005 AL Central Champion!".....alsolutely not. His t-shirts say BS like "Wrigley Field, Home of the worlds largest gay bar" and "Cubs Sox" and a nice little picture of th cubs bear full of bullet holes. That is why I hate the Sox.

To my Sox fan friends that have essentially waited as long as we have for a pennant, I say congrats, and have a drink or two on me. To the rest of the ignorant trolls and wife-beaters, I say go screw yourselves.

I'm probably more upset because of the way they play baseball. Their fans and the fact that they're rivals make it much worse, but the main reason I hate that they've advanced is the same reason as if the Nationals had made it thus far. They aren't the most talented team, and they play a stupid brand of baseball that gets celebrated because of their flukish success.

I wish the Cubs could play this brand of baseball well enough to make it to the World Series.

I am NOT advocating small ball, but if the Cubs went that route, and made it to the WS, then hooray hooray!

I agree that I'd take it any way I get it, but when it's not us then it really upsets me because it gets celebrated.

Now that's sour grapes. They are winning the same way the Cubs did on 03': great pitching, "timely" hitting, good defense.

Funny, but that's how the best Yankee teams won (see: Brosius, Scott and O'neil, Paul), how the 03' Marlins won, how last year's Red Sox won...are we seeing a pattern here?

Baseball isn't all about stats: sometimes things just have to go your way. Frustrating, but true.

Posted
As a baseball fan, I love what the Sox have done. Their games have shown just how exciting good pitching and defense can be... I hope more fans will begin to appreciate this type of play.
