What a game in Columbia.

Mizzou puts up a quick 14 off two defensive touchdowns early.

Iowa State answers back with 24 straight points.

Down 10 with under 7 minutes to go, starting senior quarterback Brad Smith leaves with an injury.

True freshman Chase Daniel comes in and leads the offense downfield for a FG with 5:05 left to make it 24-17.

Defense gets a big stop with just under 3 minutes to go.

Chase Daniel runs the 2 minute drill to perfection, throwing a touchdown pass to Sean Coffey with 20 minutes to go to force OT.

Defense out there first, have their best defensive stand of the year, forcing 3 and done and a missed FG, offense gets a first down, centers it, kicks the GW.

Unbelievable game. Just like that, Mizzou is only 3 wins away from a bowl game.

Not only that, but they're in a 3 way tie for the Big 12 North lead, with a game against one of those teams(Nebraska) at home next week. If Mizzou can get a big win and KU pulls an upset we'll find ourselves all alone atop the north.

Man, this is just a recipe for disappointment isn't it, haha.

What do you think? Is there a quarterback controversy in Columbia right now?

No way. There's not a chance in hell that a freshman will come in and take Senor Smith's job. I don't care how good of a job Chase did - if Bd. Smith is healthy, he's our guy. And he should be.

It's so on next week. I can't wait.

A little surprising. I expected Minnesota and California to drop out, Louisville stay, and Michigan jump back in.

I think Miami is the most undeserving top 10 team right now. It is a direct result of pre-season rankings, and they should be somewhere around 12 or 13

Blackout game!

I know what you're saying about Smith, but he couldn't get anything going yesterday. The drive Daniel had before Smith was hurt(in which Crossett missed another kick, I swear I'm going to take his job) I think was the only time before the last two drives where we had more than one first down. With the way he was playing, I don't think we win with Smith finishing the game. Hopefully if Smith plays next week he can get back to form from previous weeks.

Was he doing more passing and less running yesterday? I wasn't at the game and I don't know anything about it aside from the fact that we won and that Brad got hurt. And what's up with his injury?

Didn't seem to be much different than previous weeks, but our offense couldn't move with Brad on the field. I think if anything we were running too much. Smith's injury came when he got rocked on a blitz. From what I can gather, it might have been a concussion, and Smith may have even been cleared to play later in the game, but Pinkel stuck with Daniel. Smith was good enough to go out with the captains for the overtime coinflip, so he wasn't completely out of it I guess.

I agree completely. If Smith is healthy you have to put him out there, however, if Smith is struggling again, I hope Pinkel has the sense to put Daniel in.

Next week is the game of the year. If we pull out a win, we only need 2 wins in our last 4 games (@ KU, @ CU, vs. BU, @ KSU) to qualify for a bowl game, if we lose, we need 3 of those 4. The North is definitely ours for the taking.

Another thing on the topic of Mizzou football, does it enrage anyone else that Coffman isn't on the field for nearly every offensive play? He leads the team in catches, and is second to Coffey in yards, but he plays only 1/2 to 2/3 of the offensive snaps. I understand that Rucker is talented too, but Coffman is an absolute beast over the middle.

Coach's poll is a typical "what have you done for me lately" reactionary fiasco. Ohio State, with 2 losses, ranked ABOVE the team that beat them last week?

"You ought to be a guest on 'What's My Line," because nobody would believe you're an analyst with talk like that- Lou Holtz to Mark May after the ND/USC game"

adam, what did May say to cause Lou to say this? I didn't catch the show.

I know he said that USC/ND wasn't even the best game of the day let alone the year, but I don't if that's what prompted the line.

May's an idiot and a douche.

May said ND would start 0-6. Of course he would say that it wasn't the best game of the year. He's got to cover his own stupid ass.

I was there. It was the best college football game at the very least since ND/Miami 1988. In doubt the entire time, great plays made by great players everywhere. Leinart didn't look solid but he made the one great throw that he had to make on a 4th and nine...on which the stadium was louder than I have ever heard it, including when Shane Walton picked the game winner against UM three yrs ago, which I also saw.

What you saw was two great teams out on the field, including four of the ten best players in the country in Brady Quinn, Jeff Samardzija, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush. Bush won himself a Heisman on Saturday running for 160 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Leinart fumble call was the correct call but it the refs screwed it up. They were focusing on where to spot the ball and let the clock run down letting the ND students think the Irish had won. The first priority in that situation is making sure the clock is correct first. That was mismanagement on the refs' part.

You want a prediction? This will be the last game Notre Dame loses until the fall of 2007.

The ref right there was waving his arms to stop the clock the entire time, I don't know why the clock didn't stop.

EDIT: I'm having a real hard time seeing Quinn as one of the top 10 players in the country. I know everyone is dying to make him a Heisman candidate, but it's just not there. 2 losses, every team they've beaten has 4 losses except Michigan(3). Notre Dame has played 3 of the 10 worst Passing defenses in the country, and Quinn isn't in the top 15 in Yards per Attempt, completion percentage, or passer rating. It's hard to make the case that Quinn is a top 5 QB, nevermind top 10 overall. Young, Vick, Leinhart, Hodges, Stanton, McNeal, Clemens, all of those guys are better than Quinn in most if not all those categories. Heck, statistically, Quinn isn't much different from Stocco of Wisconsin, and he's faced better defenses than Quinn.

For a good 5-10 seconds. The clock operator messed up big time. Even the NBC commentators (who thought a punt return for -13 yards was "breaking free") were on top of it.

The replay showed the refs signaling to stop the clock as soon as the ball went out of bounds. The person who runs the clock made the mistake, the refs did it correctly on the field.

One thing that is really starting to upset me is people saying ND got screwed by the non-call on the last play of the game. This game was too good and both teams played too well to have it negated by people blaming the result on a missed call.

Did you watch gameday at all. I thought that was awesome. It doesn't compare to being in the stadium, of course but it was cool to see. I have never heard the stadium that loud-ever.

I don't remember the exact quote, but it was something along the lines of ND did nothing to impress him, they still are just an average team who hasn't beat a team with a winning record (guess Michigan doesn't count), and they should not be considered amongst the top programs in the nation. He also said that the game was not that good, and ND lost, just like he said they would. Holtz and Davis were just laughing the whole time May talked. I really don't hate many people, but Mark May is one of them. Holtz also asked him if he had ever been whipped by a 5'10" 150 lb. old man.

I was there on Gameday. I watched everything and the place exploded when Kirk picked us. Lee got soundly booed -- him, Mark May and former ESPN employee Trev Alberts must be buddies who just sit around trashing the Irish.

The stadium has never been that loud. I've been to eighteen Notre Dame home games, twelve wins, all six home games of the Return to Glory season, a bunch of great comeback wins, an overtime win, and it has never once been as loud as it was Saturday. I may not even have my voice all the way back by the time I go to the BYU game this Saturday (which will probably be just as boring, not to mention cold, as the 2002 Rutgers game in terms of the all-around sense of disappointment that will probably be around the campus).

I lost all respect for Mark May when he made the argument that ND wasn't worth anything because Pitt lost to Ohio. Then when ND was 2-0 going into the MSU game, he predicted they'd be 3-2 after five, after already being wrong about ND being 0-6. May is an idiot, plain and simple. You've gotta love those anti-ND fans who can never accept when we're actually good. Credit ESPN with hiring guys like Digger Phelps and Lou Holtz to offset the ND hatred that literally oozes from some of the on-air employees there.

I was at that Rutgers game. Don't remember it being that cold, but it was very quite. ND is favored by 21.5 right now. I will be at the Syracuse and Tennessee games this year. I don't think anything will ever be the same at Saturday. I missed the predictions by Gameday, but was there for about an hour from when they started. Just an amazing day. I heard there were 150k on campus that day. I went to Legends to eat, and every seat in the room with the big screen was taken, about 2 hours before kickoff. I have walked in there before on gamedays and sat down well after kickoff. It was just crazy how many people were there. Alot of USC fans too, but they were all great, IMO. Talked to quite a few and they all flew out from LA. Some paid 400 a night for hotel rooms. Crazy. I am just glad I was able to experience this. I wasn't there in '88 but some of my family said it was the only game that has ever compared to the game with Miami that year. I have some friends in LA and they are already trying to get me to go out there for the game next year. That would awesome.

Holtz is the moron, good heavens. And how did he get a job as an analyst with that nauseating lisp.

And Tennessee will beat Notre Dame.

Holtz is a moron? How so?

Posted
Apparently he thinks ND is still writing him checks if his BS on College Gameday is any indication.

What BS? If what he said is BS, then your correct statement would be "All analysts except Mark May and John Saunders are morons"
