According to the Baltimore Sun (registration required), Sosa's season is finished.

It was a dissapointing season for the future HOFer.

Sosa is done for season

Hampered by injuries, veteran finishes with .221 average, 14 HRs

Baltimore isn't likely to re-sign him in the offseason. The question exists: Does Sosa have anything left?

Will any teams take a chance on him this offseason?

One of those cry faces was because I feel bad for Sammy. The other four are because I know the cavalry will soon be here to start the Roid talk.

As someone brought up a few months ago, he should probably go to Japan. He's still a bona-fide celebrity over there and a Japanese team would probably pay him more than any MLB team.

What was the name of the movie that Tom Selleck did that in?

I think it would be sad for him to play out the string in the Japanese leauge - he should do the one classy thing he's done in the last couple of years and retire.

This is the guy that was the only reason to watch cubs baseball for about 5 years. I am not a big fan of his, but he deserves better than this from the fan base that put him up on a pedestal.

I wouldn't be surprised to see someone like George Steinbrenner take a chance on him if it doesn't cost too much.

No matter what I think of Sammy and how he left the Cubs, I'm sorry to see him end his career this way if this is the way it's going to go.

If he wasn't already on Baltimore, I'd say that the Orioles would sign him this off season. That seems to be their MO (anyone remember that albatross contract they signed David Segui to?)

I think he'd be a great fit in Colorado. He's chasing 600 HR's and that's a park he could hit some home runs. They could sign him on the cheap, and they have the money to do it with Hampton now coming off the books and all those other bad contracts gone. They have a good nucleus of talent working their way onto the roster. A veteran bat who plays part time seems like a good way for Sammy to go out. Pitches don't break as well in Colorado and he would probably increase his contact there.

Once Sosa retires and is away from the game for a few years Cubs fans will have nothing but love for him. That's the way it goes for any great player that stays a little too long. There were people trying to run Walter Payton out of town his last few seasons for Neil Anderson of all people!

The fans will remember the HRs, the '98 and 2001 seasons and forget the rest.

I could see it, but Colorado would be stupid to pay him much of anything. Sammy at $5m playing in Coors (start every home game, and half the away games) would be an interesting investment for that squad.

I wasn't referring to Colorado giving him big money. He'd be a nice draw at the ball park as he chased 600. It's whether Sammy could bite off a chunk of pride and except a low base salary with incentives. Who else will be interested? How much will they be willing to pay?

The NL West is a horrible division right now. Colorado had a somewhat down year from Helton, Barmes was hurt for a good portion of the season, Atkins has a year under his belt now. Add a veteran bat here and there (RF, 2nd and C) and they have an opportunity to leap frog over a couple of teams next year.

Sammy appears to be the perfect acquisition of the Devil Rays following the paths of Jose Canseco, Robbie Alomar, Fred McGriff and others to obscurity.

[Off Topip] I wish the Cubs had the stable of young position players that the d-rays have. I watched a bit of the game yesterday. Gomes almost hit for the cycle, Huff had a mamoth HR. Man, they are loaded with young talent. If they could get any pitching they could be a force in a few years.[/Off Topic]

I could see Sosa in Tampa if he would take a 15 million dollar pay cut next year.

That was under different managership. The new guys have been a lot better with their FA signings (Tejada & Lopez). Of course they also brought back Ponson.

I don't see that he has much of a choice but to take a $15MM pay cut.
