Manager Dusty Baker said he was well aware of Murton’s exploits in helping the Cubs win.

“I’ve been having my eyes open on Murton,” said Baker, who has been accused of not liking young players. “I just don’t brag right away or jump on bandwagons. That’s just how I am.

I've never used this emoticon becuase frankly I hate it but this surely calls for it

So Dusty, who is supposedly a players manager, won't "brag right away or jump on bandwagons" about Murton? Hmmm, I wonder why?

you guys are taking the statement out of context to mean something Dusty probably didn't intend. read the very next statement after the segment you quoted:

"Murton’s played outstanding. He’s hit the ball hard, playing good defense and running the bases well. He opened my eyes from the beginning.”

i'm no big fan of dusty's, but he actually complimented Murton.

Interesting. I didn't read the whole quote, but I wonder if he feels this way then why isn't he playing every day? If I had a player who was playing "outstanding", I would not play him every couple of days.

It's funny because adding that on points out that dusty is lying about liking murton. If his eyes had been opened from the beginning,, he would have played a heck of a lot more

Barring moving Hairston to LF or putting Macias or Grieve out there, Murton would look to be the #1 guy on the depth chart in LF at this point

If Dusty was so high on Murton why was he sent down to the minors for a while? Why did he not get more playing time when we had scrubs like Lawton, and Holla among others playing LF? Baker is and always has been full of it.

I'm sure Baker sits Murton, even though he's playing outstanding, because Murton is making the veteran players look bad by outperforming them. Therefore, the less Murton plays, the less the veteran's look bad.

Unless those players are Macias or Holla...the more they played the better Murton looked!

Yeah, Macias our primary pinch-hitter and his .188 avg doing it. I hope he too is gone next year. The only reason hednry wanted this guy is because he had one good series against US 2 years ago and Hendry fell over his chair about him. Now that he is here, he is terrible. Another dumb Hendry move.

Yes it was a bad move by Hendry and I thought it was a decent move at the time as I thought he was going to be a 25th guy thuy used in emergency situations and pinch running. Let's hope Mr. Hendry has learned from this or it may be time for him to go too.

Dusty has a history of spouting insincere self-serving bullcrap, but this stuff about Murton is probably the worst yet. I love this one: "He opened my eyes from the beginning." Hey Dusty, if Murton opened your eyes right from the beginning then why was he glued to the bench until just one week ago?

Here is what Dusty said about Murton on July 9th, after Murton's second or third game in the Major League:

“It’s early,” Baker said of Murton. “For the everybody-wants-to-win-now, do you continue to experiment or do you go with a known entity, too? That’s what the question is, and what do you have to give up for the entity?”

“You can’t just shelve Holly,” Baker said. “Holly’s doing an outstanding job for us. He’s finally got his act together. I don’t want Holly off too many days. I’m going to play Holly tomorrow because if not, Holly would be off almost a week. That’s a long time.”

What am I supposed to do, push Neifi out now? This guy has saved us."

Counterpoint: Lovie Smith:

"It's important to play the best player, period," Smith said. "No more than that. Early in the year sometimes you have to work through a few things to find out exactly who the best player is, but I've never had a problem playing younger players. You would like to have your best players be veterans, but it doesn't always work out that way."

Maybe Lovie should go back to Gilligans Island because the Baker way is the right way. Until the GM releases the veteran they get major playing time no matter how bad they are. He's reached the 500 level many times and can prove it's the right way.

Well...the Cubs would be 50 games back if it was done any other way.

And then they'd have to spend big money to sign the number 1 draft pick whom they would have to find a way not to use.

"That's the Chicago way."

I like Lovie Smith as the Bears coach. I wish he would show some emotion but I respect the fact that he has a quick trigger. If I was a coach I would be the same way so I like that about him.
