Wood to be shut down tomorrow

just heard on one of the ESPN SportsCenter updates on AM 1000 that Kerry Wood WILL be shut down to have surgery tomorrow.

 

all i can say is, about time.

 

The Cubs website says surgery will be Wednesday.

 

When they say "shut down tomorrow" does that mean he's active tonight?

 

i would guess he is active, but probably won't be used. My guess is they didn't have enough time to call up someone from Iowa (probably Hill) when they announced this. No sense to have him pitch today.

When Nomar was debating going back on the DL, they called up Cedeno in advance in case they made the move. They knew after Saturday that Wood was going down soon, there's no justification not to have an arm ready to fill in.

Is Wellemeyer currently on the active roster? Because he as at the game yesterday.

 

8/14/05 Recalled RHP Todd Wellemeyer from Triple-A Iowa and optioned LHP John Koronka to Iowa.

 

In the never ending desire to keep the 12 man staff intact, they called up Welly right before the Houston series. He pitching on 8/15 and hasn't thrown first.

 

 

But they can't operate as a team without that 7th reliever.

Baker deserves to be fired for this alone. Pathetic.

As much as I dislike Baker, this was probably Wood's doing. You know he is a competitor and pitching out of the pen doesn't hurt his arm (doesn't throw enough pitches to feel abnormal pain in his shoulder). I can just see Wood angling for another appearance after a disappointing season. Could you really turn him down if you're Dusty? The chances of Wood hurting himself any further than he already is are about nil.

The chances of his hurting himself far outweigh any possible good that could come out of him coming in for one more appearance in a ruined season. Plus, one of the jobs of a manager/coaching staff is to look out for players when they won't look out for themselves. This includes sitting players when they don't want to sit, pulling players when they might not want to be pulled, etc.

could be career ending surgery, might as well get him one last taste of piching in the big leagues just in case.

Good. I think this should have been done 2 or 3 months ago. If we learn one thing from this, I want to see them add another starter in the off season. Prepare as if Woods won't be there next year.

Can you imagine a rotation of Prior, Z, Wood, Burnett, Maddux? One can only dream :)

If Kerry isn't ready in Feb., there is going to be hell to pay. And someone should have Dusty committed for picthing him last night.

 

I tell you: this stinks of in-fighting between Hendry/MacPhail vs. Dusty.

I doubt that. I heard Hendry say on Comcast Sports Net's SportsNite that Wood would be available so he figured Kerry would be used if the situation presented itself.

That would be beautiful "IF" Burnett's arm is up to snuff.
