The key with Giles is the contract length, because of his age. The money is a non-issue, the Cubs have deep pockets and more $$ to spend this coming year than any other team. Giles fits a need for us--badly--and the Cubs have little choice but to overpay for him. So long as it's a 3-year deal, perhaps with a 4th year option, I think you need to get him. The only other available free agent OF that could help this team as much is Damon, and I think he is a bigger contract risk than Giles.

I'd rather get Furcal for leadoff than Damon, anyways.

Now given all the money the Cubs have to spend, and how desperate are the straights this organization has fallen into, I wouldn't cry if the Cubs signed BOTH Damon and Giles, but they simply must sign one of them, and Giles is the smarter choice.

Giles is one of the top hitters in the league. If he wants 11/12/12, only 3 years, then I'd be hard pressed not to give it to him considering the dire straits of our outfield.

EDIT: Math is good.

I'd do it too. It's one thing to overpay. But it's another to overpay when the alternative is suckiness.

Have to assume Giles @ his age and with his lack of playoff appearances will want to go to a winner. If Anaheim throws him 3 and 33, can't see him passing up that. Hopefully the Cubs don't completely collapse and can finish respectfully. Some of these kids can wait until next year.

People are going to compare a possible Giles signing to Alou and I don't buy into it.

The difference is that prior to Alou becoming a Cub he had played over 150 games 2 times in his career in 8 seasons. He had also played under 130 in 3 of those seasons.

Giles has played in 150 games 4 of the past 5 seasons and he is well on his way to that mark again.

He has had an OBP of .400 or better 7 of the last 8 seasons including a .422 mark this year.

That to me symbolizes one of the best hitters in baseball, the home runs are just an added bonus but those will increase outside of San Diego.

I have no problem paying Giles 11/12/12, I'd even push for a team option on a 4th year with a $2 million buyout.

Giles has also played center field throughout his career (though not a whole lot), that to me is an added plus...I guess I could use the phrase "killing two birds with one stone."

I'll be posting my Cubs Offseason Plan later tonight, and Giles will definitely be a part of it.

I don't see Anaheim signing an outfielder. They already have a lot of cash tied up in that OF in Vlad, Garrett, and Finley.

Finley's been a major disappointment and they only have him signed for another year. Also, they lose Salmon's contract and can move GA to DH. It appears they won't be spending much on pitching, as their minor league system is pretty strong, and they're really raking in the money this year. My guess is that they'll have Giles on their radar, as they need to add a little more offense.

Giles is probably an Angel if the Padres do not resign him (which they won't with a project 60 million payroll).

The Angels ahve needed another bat all year. They were looking for a DH this past offseason (remember Piazza Rumors) and still haven't filled that hole.

The only way that they won't sign Giles is if they finally part with some of the young talent that is blocked (hello Kotchman) and made a trade. I can actaully envision a Sheffield deal for the Angels or a Griffey deal.

They have also talked about sending Erstad back to the OF and starting Kotchman at 1B.

And I'd do 3 years/$35M for Giles.

I'd do it.

It's easier to stomach overpaying for three years. A club with the Cubs' resources can spend a little extra on a valuable player like Giles over three years -- it gets more difficult if overpaying for 5-7 years. Giles would be such a great fit for this team, and likely wouldn't be much overpaid until the third year (though, admittedly, I have no idea exactly how to quantify price v. production).

If it's going to be Murton or Giles at 3/35, i'd do it.

if he sucks in year two, we can just eat half the contract and trade him.

If needed, give Giles a 4th year. (Yes, highly unlikely the Cubs do this).. Giles is exactly what the Cubs offense needs. .400 obp guy w/ some pop and he bats left-handed.

Am I the only one who remembers the Cubs ALMOST getting Giles for Steve Trachsel(or some crappy pitcher on the Cubs at the time)? :-k

Besides knowig the Cubs they prolly sign this http://baseballreference.com/g/gilesbr01.shtml, instead of this guyhttp://baseballreference.com/g/gilesbr02.shtml.

Did he suffer a serious knee injury yesterday?

Here's what rotoworld had to say about Giles:

The Padres are calling Brian Giles' injury a bruised right knee, but he'll undergo an MRI to rule out further damage.

The Padres fear that there may be ligament damage to the knee, the same knee in which Giles suffered a strained ligament in April 2003 when playing for the Pirates. ''Hopefully, it's a day to day thing and I will be right back out there,'' said Giles, who added that the injury does not feel the same as when he strained the ligament with Pittsburgh

No. He sprained his knee after a collision with Dave Roberts in the OF.

:o :o

Memo to SD, shut this guy down for the season!! Don't need him running into anymore outfielders. :D
