It's the best thing to do. Wood's best value is as a starter and he needs surgery to get to that for 2006.

I wouldn't let Prior or Zambrano have over a 100 pitch game the rest of the way.

Oh yeah, I would seriously think about shutting down Ramirez if he looks at all like he could injure himself further.

Posted
Ramirez is probably finished this year anyway. Someone (don't remember who) stated on ESPN 1000 that this type of injury usually requires 4-6 weeks to recover from.

Well, I guess the season really is over. They traded Lawton, they're shutting Wood down... if you need to shut Aram down for the rest of the way, so be it....

I'm glad they didn't ride Kerry to the bitter end. I really hope he has his surgery within the next week or two.

About time. Now if they can give up on Rusch in the rotation and give Welly/Hill/Pinto some starts we would all be happy.

Speaking of Pinto, he has a 1-hitter going through 7 tonight. \:D/

Lets hope Rusch's tenure as a cub comes to an end soon. It's very clear that he was a one-hit wonder.

Shut down Ramirez, Nomar, and Wood the rest of the way IMO. Call up Kelton to play 3B. Call up Dopirak to play 1B for a short while. Call up Eric Patterson to give him some ML time. Give D-Lee a free vacation to Chicago's 5-star 5-diamond hotel with their finest suite because he deserves it.

Im looking forward to 2006.

Why the heck do people think Dopirak is ready to play in the majors? Isn't he still in A-ball? I don't think bringing him up to a level where he will be totally overmatched is a good idea. I don't think it is necessary to shut down every player for the rest of the year, but Baker should certainly give them plenty of rest.

Not every player.. Players who are day to day and would we would benefit a bunch if we didnt waste them now. Dopirak should be called up for September only. If not that, play Holla at 1B.. Hell I wouldn't mind bringing up Jermaine Van Buren and starting him in place of Rusch.

How many people are you going to drop from the 40 man? You'd have to drop at least two for Van Buren and Dopirak, and the Cubs would be incredibly foolish to do it for Dopirak at this point. Silly idea.

Kelton switched away from 3B a few years ago, at his request. He's now an OF. Kelton won't play 3B in the bigs (unless it's an emergency). Eric Patterson was at low-A ball all season and was just promoted to AA for the West Tenn playoffs, I wouldn't quadruple jump him to the big leagues and add him to the 40-man for a cup of coffee (nor will the Cubs). He won't be ready for the big leagues next season. Dopirak is struggling to hit .240 and slug .400 at high-A. There's some question whether he is ready for AA next season; even though this offseason will be his first chance to be selected in the Rule 5 draft, the Cubs might not protect him. They definitely won't triple jump him to the bigs now and start his option clock.

If I were the Cubs, I'd shut down Ramirez and Wood (Nomar wouldn't want that as he's a free agent at the end of the season). I'd limit Lee, Zambrano and Prior's playing time. I'd make sure to play Corey all the time to see if the Cubs might consider keeping him next season or if he can increase his trade value. I'd start Cedeño (SS), Fontenot (3B) and Murton (OF) and consider adding to the 40-man Brandon Sing once the WT playoffs are done (along with promoting Aardsma, Greenberg and Pinto once the WT playoffs are over). I'd also promote Leicester, Mitre and Soto from Iowa and start one of Hill/Mitre/Welly over Rusch.

Doesn't Lee still have a shot at the MVP? I highly doubt that Lee would want to be sitting while Albert, Cabrera, and A. Jones continue to build upon their stats. If D. Lee only wins the BA title than he does not win the MVP, IMO.

And frankly why else would people watch the Cubs in the next month, if Derrek Lee was guarenteed to be on the bench?

Plus, heck, he's a great September away from the Triple Crown. Unlikely of course, but the Cubs could use the positive attention.

Yes and finish 20 under .500 and watch Furcal, Giles and Wagner go elsewhere.

You really think September is going to make or break a FA's decision on the quality of the franchise? The Cubs are in a big city, big market, with good talent, and recent success.

It may not matter to Furcal. He's young and has been to the playoffs multiple times. Most likely it will be about the money for him. Now Giles is probably a different story. Finish nowhere close to .500 and Giles becomes less likely.

I totally disagree. Most FA are smart enough to realize that what happens is September is pretty much irrelevant once a club is out of contention. Also, most FA have a large enough ego to think they can make a difference anyway.

I thought Wood coming out of the pen would be the difference between the Cubs making or missing the post-season. :titanic:

I'm still waiting for Wood to blow his arm out. Perhaps the intelligent observers are wrong??

Guys, Williamson, Wood and Nomar, it's like three trades!

.... and two of the three were pretty darned good, no?
