Mulder Tonight

9inn, 0r, 5h, 2bb, 4k.

Classic good Mulder. He was fluid, efficient, and had a groundball ratio of 18-4. He induced 4 double plays. In short he looked really good. He's got 14 wins and his era is now down to a respectable 3.87.

But this is what gets me.

Mulder would appear to be maddeningly inconsistent. But look deeper and you'll see he has been a model of consistency. What you say? Let me explain.

Mulder - Day

Starts: 10

W-L: 1-5

ERA: 7.57

INN: 54.2

K: 33

BB: 21

OPP AVG: .355

Horrendous

Mulder - Night

Starts: 15

W-L: 13-1

ERA: 1.53

INN: 96.2

K: 48

BB: 32

OPP AVG: .237

Second only to Rocket's 1.24 night era.

He has consistently sucked in day starts and consistently owned some fools in night starts. What's up with this? Historically he hasn't been any worse in day games than night games, but this year he has been two VERY different pitchers. I guess it's just one of those unexplainable quirks. The only solace I take is that most playoff games and every World Series game take place at night.

My Cardinal fan friend was talking about this, so I looked up his splits from past years.

Last year he had a 5.37 era at night and a 3.20 era during the day.

2002 and 2003, he was basically the same day or night.

Strikes me as flukish.

Cracker cant handle the heat is all.

So obvious! I can't believe I didn't realize that sooner. Serves me right for not paying more attention to the bastion of wisdom that is Jonathan B. Baker.

His only win during the day was the 10 inning shutout, imagine what his numbers are in the day withoug that game.

It'd be interesting to see if the lid was on the juice box for that one.

It was at Busch Stadium against Clemens. I was there :D

He must've went to bed early that night. Maybe he's really upset about getting traded and drinks himself into a stupor everynight so he's too hung over to pitch day games.

or maybe instead of being up late boozing, Edmonds is up late with him.....

nevermind.

just one of the rare occassions I miss the old board.

It must have something to do with his gameday routine being disrupted for day games. Or maybe he's just not a morning person. Who knows. There is so logical reasoning I can think of to why someone's D/N splits are that extreme. Mind boggling...

Theres one guy I can live without having on the Cubs :)

It works for David Wells...

That's exactly what I was thinking; the gameday routine part, the not-playing-for-the-Cubs part....

So it was probably closed right?

I haven't been to Busch Stadium since April, but it didn't have a roof then.

No. I meant Minute Maid. It was probably closed.

BTW - another night game: 8in, 3h, 1er, 2bb, 3k, 94p, 60strikes.

That's friggin' weird.

Wasn't one of the "Killer B's" that way? Great for night games and fair to poor on day games...

You know the moment the playoff schedule comes out LaRussa will shift the pitching rotation so that Mulder has night starts.

Shouldn't be too much of a problem, there's probably a maximum of 2 day games in a series.

Neither Biggio or Bagwell have pronounced Day/Night splits, I can't find them for Derek Bell.

Not this season; maybe a year or two ago.

I dunno, I could be smoking crack too.

Oh, I was looking at their career numbers.

Doing a quick search Biggio has a career .243 daytime average and .346 nighttime average. There's nothing on MLB.com where you can break splits out year by year. But I swear a season or two ago he was hitting in the .150 to .180 range for day games. One of the guys in my roto league had Biggio and benched him any weeks the Astros had 3+ day games.
