Doesn't Murton have to be on the 25-man roster BEFORE Sept. 1 to be eligible for the playoff roster?

Something tells me that won't be an issue.

If the Cubs fail to make-up any ground before September, and they keep running out the likes of Burnitz & Co. everyday, then perhaps the Cubs fans who still think this regime is doing well will change their mind.

If the argument is you can't use kids when trying to contend, then what would be the defense for not using kids when you can no longer pretend that you are contending?

But even if they fail to make up any ground, they will still be able to say they are "in the race" until there are very few games left, at which point many casual fans who still back the Cubs brass won't care what happens.

I'm waiting for the same to dopes to wait for this team to finish with 83ish wins and argue for keeping Dusty around because he's the first manager in a long time to lead the team to three consecutive +.500 seasons.

We really optioned Murton? That can't be serious. This organization is pathetic. What the heck good is Wellemeyer going to do for us? Man, I dislike Baker, and his sideshow project Hendry. It's obvious baker runs the show.

that will be fun

While I'm not sold on Murton, he definitely deserved better than this based on his small sample of outstanding production and the current state of the OF, which is weak. They had no better RH bat off the bench and right now, I feel more comfortable with Murton in the lineup over Burnitz and Patterson (if the Cubs had a Cf'er). Lawton has been a disappointment as well since joining the Cubs.

I don't like the move.

They make too much money to sit the bench, dude.

Wow.

Just...wow.

I can't wait until Hendry is interviewed on this move. I guarantee it'll go something like "he needs to play everyday, he'll be back Sept 1st, but we want him to get more experience against RHP, Jerry is versatile, veteran, etc..."

We're back to 3 utility IF on the roster, and we don't have a single RH OF bat except for Macias.

Hendry is really making short work of the farm system he built.

I'll say this also: No reason for Wellemeyer to be on this team right now. Carrying 12 pitchers is dumb. I don't care if we're in Colorado. The Rockies suck. If they beat up our staff we don't deserve to contend.

If Macias counts as an OF, than Hairston should too.

I guess, but both are pretty *meh* out there...

Hey, CP20, what about the non-casual or serious fans who still back Hendry despite not agreeing with him sending Murton down? Or did you mean that only fans that don't pay enough attention and aren't really serious about the Cubs winning would still think Hendry is a GM worth having?

And, MPC, just a friendly word of advice, be careful who you call "dopes" on this board. Name-calling and insulting entire sections of Cubs fans just because you disagree with them tends to be poo-pooed around here.

What I meant is that the fans that don't pay enough attention, whether they are Hendry backers or not, likely wouldn't change their position on the issue based on PT after they've been mathematically eliminated, since they, well, wouldn't pay attention to it.

That is correct. Please don't label, insult, or generalize about groups of posters. I think he meant fans, in general, and not necessarily posters, but the principle holds.

Thanks.

Wow... just wow...

A guy, who battted .330 something, with a OPS of .900+, and this is how he gets rewarded? A demotion to Iowa?

Boy, it's a darn shame that I can't use colorful words on here to voice my displeasure. But if I was an owner/board of baseball operations, Mr. Hendry and Mr. Baker would deftinaly hear from me.

*shaking head in disgust* I could never understand how in the world that some guys, who are getting paid millions of dollars to evaluate/manage a team, can't figure out that player A is better than player B or C.

What a joke.

We optioned Murton?

Why? It makes no sense.

Sure it does. We need 12 pitchers and Murton makes the least amount of money.

Actually, we need Holla, because the Cubs need a hitter who can consistently strike out from the left side of the plate. #-o

By my calculations this most likely will allow Murton to retain his rookie status next year (2 days shy of 45 days on the 25 man roster). Not defending the move, but perhaps this had something to do with it.

But he'll be back in September to pick up that time.

Hendry traded for Lawton so that he could play every day in LF while the Cubs try to get back in contention. At 4.5 games back Hendry needs to stick with the plan and hope it pans out. If the Cubs go on another losing streak and fall hopelessly out of it by September 1st Murton will be back up and will get plenty of playing time. Unlike a lot of fans Hendry is not ready to throw in the towel. With that in mind it does not significantly improve the team to have Murton up right now because he is going to get few starts over Lawton and inexperienced players generally are not very effective late inning PH options.
