Although the dog days of summer are still here. The Cubs appear to be headed to yet another season of fultility, that would make it 97 and counting. For this reason I thought about an off-season move I'd like to share with the community. I'm not very good at this stuff but fire away anyway.

The Cubs trade Corey Patterson to the Giants for Jason Schmidt. I think that is a fair trade given the fact that the Cubs will have to take on Schmidt's salary.

I know Schmidt is an injury risk but he has thrown 134 innings this year, strikinging out 130 and walking 62. His ERA is 4.29

The Giants are in need of a lower priced CF with Alou and Bonds in the OF.

I don't want to trade Patterson but I think he is done as a Cub. I would also like to see him get another chance somewhere else.

I think you would have to give up more to get a guy like Schmidt, and i dont think they would trade him because the giants are preparing for next year and schmidt is the ace of their staff. I love the thought of it because of how he has dominated the cubs, but its not gonna happen.....

why settle for schmidt...? go for santana.!

Just picking..You will have to give up alot more for schmidt than a cf with promise that hasnt delivered.

Now maybe C-pat and Wood/hill for schmidt would work maybe.

But If I was a cub fan FIRST I WOULD WANT SOMETHING DONE WITH THE MANAGER....you guys are owed a good year (should have been this yr.) look at the lineup and rotation...sicking....good and the performance given is terrible....start with the head and then go from there

I think that the Giants geared up for a stretch run this year(they are the oldest team in the league). Bonds being out has killed them. This trade probably won't happen, but it might depend on what the Giants want to do for next year. They might go young(in which case the trade would make sense) or they might go with veterans again and make another run for the playoffs.

Either way, I don't want Schmidt. As others have pointed out, he's getting worn down. Plus, I think we have more pressing needs than starting pitching.

What?? There is absolutely no way that you could get anything resembling Jason Schmidt for CPatt. He has zero trade value. He couldn't even hit in AAA.

.297/.366/.505 in 91 ABs

And yeah, I don't see Schmidt as being that attractive.

Exactly! Corey couldn't even hit in AAA.

I'm not interested in Schmidt until he learns how to get more people out with his low-90s fastball.

Oh, my bad. He must've had a good game or two before he got called up? It doesn't matter. He really really has no trade value. How about hitting in the bigs then?

Why not just get all of Dusty's old players over here? Can the Giants throw JT Snow and Kirk Rueter in too?

We've already got Neifi.

I'm guessing Grissom would have to be part of that deal to appease Dr. Dusty.

We're in luck, he's a free agent!

Corey has one last shot in 2006, IMO. If he sucks, he'll be gone midseason or at the latest by 2007.

Erik,

I think you are being too generous. I don't think he's in a Cub uniform after the 2005 season. I have it on good authority that Hendry will do everything he can to trade Patterson during the offseason, low value or not. Hendry is absolutely pissed off at Corey's play and attitude since he has returned. And, seeing 5 pitches in 4 at bats last night was just the icing on the cake. Although he probably won't play with the major league team this year, I get the strong sense that the Felix Pie in CF era is set to start in March.

Whether or not Patterson is on the team next year, Pie needs to be in AAA. Looks like we're doomed to see the same mistakes the organization made with Patterson.

By the end of this year Pie will probably have almost 1500 minor league AB's, which I believe is almost double what Patterson had. I don't see how the Cubs could be accused of doing the "same" thing they did with Patterson.

Pujols only had about 500 minor league AB's. Miguel Cabrera had about 1400 minor league AB's.

If the guy is as good as everyone says then get him up here and don't waste a year in AAA. Patterson's inability to develop at the MLB level should not force the Cubs to keep every prospect in the minors longer. Each guy is different, and Pie might use the promotion as a catalyst to improve at a quicker pace than he would at AAA. If he doesn't, you can always send him back down to work on his game.

What's the main knock against Patterson? Strike zone judgment. Pie at AA has worse plate discipline than Patterson did at AA, and that's with Pie having more AB's like you say. He needs more time to refine that portion of this game, since it is so important.

Are you really sure that you want him to develop up here after Dusty's comments on teaching while in the majors? The coaching staff will get a hold of him and he will swing at anything that doesn't already.

Guess Murton's better off in AAA then. Dusty could eventually ruin him.

Listen, I like Corey, but I'm so sick of hearing about how this is all the Cubs fault. When does Corey get some? He's always had the tools to be a average, or better MLB player............at some point COREY has utilize HIS skills to be the player he can be. He has to understand that he's not going to hit 40+ HRs a year and with his build, he may never do it.

It's not just plate discipline either. He's doesn't think like a baseball player on deck, or at the plate. He very rarely takes a pitch when the pitchers struggling. How many times have you seen the guy in front of him walk and then he comes up and swings at the first pitch?

He seems reluctant to cut down on his swing. If he did, he could be an all-fields hitter. Hit to the gaps and run like the wind. That would be utilizing your god given talent..............but that seems to be beneath Corey.

I'm sorry, I use to make apologies for him...............I'm just not going to do it anymore.
