Until now, I've been thinking the critical date is Sept 1, when the kids come up. No, I'm not talking about the playoffs this year, I'm talking about next year.

My thought was that when they finally admit the towel needs to be tossed in, and the kids are going to play, then Dusty HAD to go, or next year was a loss too...

I now think that date that Dusty has to go to even have a chance next year is NOW, today, before playing the Cardinals.

The team is dying and the fan support is dying. It has been for a long time. However, if we go into the next four games and lose even 3 of them, it's going to take at least a year to recover, and Dusty can't do it.

Hendry needs to call a press conference this evening and get rid of him. Clean house, start over, and start rebuilding. If he doesn't, we will have to look to '07, and probably won't have a championship caliber team for several years, and it will be the next generation of pitchers... so much for Prior, Wood, and Zambrano...

I think September 1st should in fact be the end of Dusty Baker. We're probably going to lose three-fourths of our games remaining in August, and end up way out of the race. At that point, it's time to just screw around and see what we have in the minors.

I'd rather see the kids from AA and AAA who still give a crap playing now instead of pathetic retreads like Poorez, Hollandsworthless, Blank-o, Assias, etc.

I wake up every morning and check the transactions for first thing hoping I read a thread that says "Dusty has been canned by GM Hendry!".

Me too... I guess my point is, I wasn't really going to be surprised until Sept 1... but now, I think we've reached the point where it's really amazing if it doesn't happen...

Want to hear something funny? I first read that as saying "Dusty has canned GM Hendry".

Honestly, if this team finishes signifgantly under 500 and close to last (probably unlikely) you have to think that Dusty is gone.

I think you're right.

Friday, August 5th was supposed to be a big day for the Cubs. Kerry Wood, Scott Williamson and Nomar Garciaparra were coming off the disabled list. Combine that with the newly acquired Matt Lawton and the team was ready for the stretch run. You've probably noticed, though, that they haven't won since.

I think he's gone at the end of the season.

My guess is you are young. I have some bad news for you. You never lose the afflicition that is being a Cub fan. Until you physically die.

Fan support for the Cubs will never die. If bad teams killed the fan support.....then the team would have no fans by now.

What is happening now is nothing new. Its not an emergency...its not new....its not desperate.....its the norm. Get used to it.

Firing the manager wont change a thing (we've tried that many, many times).

fan support for the CUBS won't die, but support for this team and this manager can die.

And I think it's already goign to start dying for next year. Dusty has lost all respect in the eyes of most fans. There's really nothing he can do to get it back.

To me, that means he should be out the door no matter HOW much it costs...

Firing the manager now won't do anything.

Of course it will, it will improve the team now, and for next year. How is that not doing anything?

Maybe someone else will let the kids play, but it will have to be an interim. I'm hoping for Joe Girardi or Fredi Gonzalez next year.

It will help for next year maybe, but the only thing that could help now would be a shaking the line-up up. I just think firing a manager during the season tells the players they won't be held responsible for their play.

I've done that for a while every time I come into my house.

I also annoy my friends here who don't give a crap about baseball by asking them apropros of nothing - they say "Guess what?" and I say "Dusty was fired?" they say "No" I say "What...." and it kinda tails off for me there.

As much as I hate to admit it, firing Dusty now will have minimal impact as this team has gone past the critical point already. The only positive about letting Dusty finish the season is that perhaps he saves a little bit of pride and leaves the team on amicable terms.

But you can't NOT fire him, even if it would have a minimal effect. You need to start building for next year and getting a fresh start for 2006.

Oh yes, it's very important that Dusty leaves on good terms! We don't want to have to explain anything to Darren!

Get him out so the kids can play for the rest of the season.

I actually had a dream that Dusty was fired last night. I can't really describe the joy it inspired. Kind of like when they got rid of Baylor, but so much more...

Can you imagine the state this board would be in if Dusty got canned? It would be pandemonium. It goes without saying that the boards would crash, but that would just be the start of it. Tim would get crocked and start just giving away premium memberships...Treebeard would track down ZZ Thorn and just embrace him for 7-12 minutes...DJAXX would run the bases at Pringles Park stark naked...Bruce Miles would convince Jay Marrioti to quit his job so they could start an inspirational folk band together....It would be mad. Absolutely mad.
