I cant wait till this thread is 150 pages long and they start to spew venom towards every player who has ever hit a home run in his career.

Nah, no need for us to do that. Ryno did it for us.

:x

I know.

I'm sorry, I know he's a hall of famer and he deserves every acoloade for doing so. But he sounded like a bitter old man at points in that speech. Okay, back on topic now. Palmiero is stupid.

so with all of this talk about Raffy and his 3000 hits and his HOF chances, there was also alot of talk about how he was a singles hitter when he first came up. it got me to wondering when he became a slugger. in 91 and 92 he as a 20-25 HR, 85 RBI hitter.

in 1993, he busted out for 37/105.

when Jose was in the news, half the talk was about tearing down his credability. seems to me he's turning out to be the only honest one in the bunch.

Another guy who must be somewhat relieved by this development is Mark McGwire. His testimony at the congressional hearings had many people questioning his HOF credentials, but a definite positive by Palmiero (as opposed to the pure conjecture about McGwire) could take a lot of the heat off of Big Mac.

Say what you will about McGwire's testimony that day, at least he had the integrity to not lie through his teeth before a congressional panel.

Didn't sound a tiny bit "bitter" IMO, I thought it was a great speech and hit home on every point. And yes Raffy is pathetic. *

*Barring some miracle that it wasn't his sample or something crazy.

Gerut is a guy who had me wondering. His power disappeared after 2003. Roid withdrawal or injuries? I don't know, but everyone who has a sudden power drop is a suspect in my eyes.

Although he started out as a singles hitter, there are things you can do to gain more power. Bulking up (naturally) and changing your swing a bit, working with the right coach in the offseason can help.

Not good when integrity is defined as not lying about cheating. (That's assuming he did cheat)

McGwire had a perfect chance to defend his career in a national forum and he didn't do it, so why should anyone else?

Looks like Raffy wont be getting a free ticket to Cooperstown anytime soon.

Sure he will, I'm sure Ryno will fly him out there to show him his new plaque.

I believe Bonds was tested earlier this year. Can't be positive, but I remember ESPN mentioning something about it.

No he didn't lie, he was just evasive.

I agree. I just think that Palmiero took Mac's spot as the whipping boy for the congressional hearings.

I'm not trying to defend McGwire if he did indeed use steroids. I was just pointing out that being truthful (even if it's non-committal truth) about cheating is better than a blatantly lying about it trying to save your own behind.

Just saw this on ESPNews.. we all know about the slump Giambi went through after he admitted testing positive to steroids.

Hope Palmiero doesnt do the same because the Orioles need his bat in the race for the AL East.

He was always a gap hitter in the minors, someone who took a lot of walks. However, the Indians needed some thunder, so he became more of a free swinger, striking out more, walking less, and hitting a few HRs. (Still only 22 HRs that year)

I don't think he was a steroid user, but just looking at his HR #s would possibly indicate usage. There was a story that someone posted in the thread about his trade (when we got him).

I wonder if the O's saw the writing on the wall, and that's why they failed to make any moves at the deadline.

which may account for his first power boost in 1990-1991. but then a second boost two years later?

I'm not saying Rafy didn't work hard and improve on his own, but all the anecdotal evidence seems to point to Canseco telling the truth in his book.

Great, now that Raffy has tested positive, everyone can go back to the witch hunts, wild speculation, and ludicrous accusations of the players.

Or it could have to do with the fact that no one was selling for anything less than the moon...and the Cubs made the biggest move by acquiring a career .270 hitter with bad defense, okay speed and power...who's getting paid 7.5 mil this season...

Conversely, this could have the reverse effect. People could see that someone like Palmeiro was caught and say well if they caught him but haven't caught some of these lesser name sluggers they must be clean or at least a little less guilty. But who knows.

One thing is certain with anything steroids is that it will be made a bigger deal than it is.

Are you suggesting that Harry Potter may have used steroids to get an advantage?

When you get right down to it, this is just another Rafael Pameiro boner by reason of performance enhancing substances.

You get MAJOR props for that one =D>

Knowing the issues Congress wastes time on these days, Raffy will probably get slapped with perjury.

Big Mac looks pretty good right now.
